for some reason i was expecting more horror and supernatural elements from this book but most of the stories were about the darkness within humankind, the struggle to achieve one’s dreams, and unfortunate circumstances and even thought that’s not usually for me, the thing that really sold this book for me is the elements of folklore and mystery the authors embedded throughout their stories
this dark anthology, made up of about 26 different stories, was definitely an interesting read and is really a must read for anyone who enjoys books with darker themes, gore, and folksy elements ...more

unreliable narrator is sad her dad almost died and her sick husband pisses her off so she goes to the cali desert to unwind and has a drug-infused(?), cathartic experience when she gets lost in said desert. no one knows where she is, her phone is dying, her talking rocks provide no useful advice, and she's on a wild goose chase, after a mythical cactus.
i'm still confused days later and i'm pretty sure reading this took a couple of years off my life. but extra stars because it also gave a couple back because now i know that doing drugs in the desert is bad so i'll steer clear of things like hikes and coachella ...more
