We did mock interviews, printed potential resumes, and allowed role play as the interviewer or interviewee. We then did a brief discussion of how this helped and worked for those who never had jobs, been years since they had one or businesses, and what it looks like with someone with a criminal record. A year later, had 4 financial classes offered for both levels (2-3 offered on Level II, and 1 offered on Level III then by my colleague lead it until asked to end it). ...more

I definitely went to the pictures! I started the preface (introduction) and opening chapter speaks about cases they make you review when you go to lawI definitely went to the pictures! I started the preface (introduction) and opening chapter speaks about cases they make you review when you go to law school or legal studies (paralegal) such as Plessy v. Ferguson, followed by Board of Education (50 years later) on segregation; etc. 400+ pages, which I have to return back Feb 7 and only got a chapter or two in so far. I may have to check out later, or listen to it.
I am reading other memoirs, and this one dragged on for about 50%. She shared her family accomplishments and success of her father being an Harvard grad, both parents teachers, and then father becomes an attorney. She shares her successes and nearly drowning around 7 years old was the only time I saw any tension or drama in the first half of the book. I also nearly drowned around 7/8 years old but thank God for shining his light to the surface to get to the top and to my safety without anyone pulling me out as she luckily had someone at the pool party do for her.
It did not pick up for me until she spoke about her uncle's prison sentence on page 216, which was shared only a few pages thereafter. She passed it to another attorney, yet he was released in 2016 and commutation around 2014, decades later instead of serving a life sentence (LWOP is how it is seen where I work, or in prisons). This is a life sentence without parole. He died shortly later which is even sadder.
I did like hearing about her daughter Talia being autistic, her daughter Leila writing to the President Obama about her mother being the next chosen candidate for Supreme Court Justice, and God heard the call! Yet, it took me a long time to read through this book.
Most readers want to know the hardships, downfalls and how you pick it up or succeed through the oppression, separation, or racial biases. Yet, I did not fully gain this from this memoir. I am also finding the dull parts because it does point out her successes and accomplishments that I truly want to admonish and honor to a certain perspective; yet does not dive into the issues being a black woman in the Supreme court, through her career seemed to be a breeze or luck, marriage just happened only her parents had something to say about color of their children whether or not he could accept "black" children. But we do not know how his family side felt about her. Flattery and wanted more reality.
I may purchase a copy for work library; however, I do not see this as a book club read. 3 stars. ...more

I would like to try the food plan to see if there are any changes in my weight. However, I have read, tried many different resources in the past, but I would like to try the food plan to see if there are any changes in my weight. However, I have read, tried many different resources in the past, but now I am facing menopause and see the weight gain comes on much faster than ever before.
I have done the smoothies, which is delicious. I followed the main ingredients: pineapple, and/or fruit, almond butter (or walnut butter), lime (have lime juice), and almond milk or (coconut milk, also have in powder form to be on the go). I am reading the food plans, yet I might just follow the regimen since I dislike having to buy foods and follow theirs to a tee without results.

This way, I may finally finish it after a renewal to get the title a couple more weeks longer. I like the photos in the hard copy, also on the eBook version, which is a plus.
He did share how he had relational connections during his teen years and college; not easy to talk with women/girls even if they were getting into acting/modeling roles. Megan (character) went on google to see who she was, and she is a beauty in her own right.
"Trooper"
“Mafia Boss”
Issues he undergone as actor Steve Urkel and many expected him to do it on the spot, wear these clothes since he was 14 now in his early 20s, and various lineups to perform without proper representation under his agent(s) or other sources.
At one point, he didn't want to do this character again, and willing to take a bullet to the head to be out of his misery was his words but sarcastically saying (132).
The event with the president Bill Clinton, how his agent did him as a teen, and the client was beyond words. Misrepresentation. Manager with no real legal defense to keep people out of their pockets yet still need an attorney to review contracts and get the best representation as a key actor. But this happened a lot in 90s like Usher early in his career.
I like how he said, "God filled my life with too many amazing human beings to ever think there won't be a better tomorrow. But that night I cried for what felt like a fallen soldier (252)." Furthermore, I liked his mom wisdom to find someone who has a burning passion to represent you well--in other words, see your worth and let it shine.
I can't wait to see how he either met his woman to have his daughter. I get to see his journey in Hollywood, acting career, etc.
I am proud that he wrote his memoir ( I do not see an added author, unless ghost writer) and narrates it as well. I wasn't sure what he would share or open up to the world, but just enough to like or enjoy the read.
He admitted that his mom desired him to get accepted in college and gain a degree which is a collective aspiration by the black community with their old fashion values to land a high paying job (301). He realized he needed none of that nor finished college since he already had a high paid career. I know they wanted the best belief of something to fall back on.

This Devon Franklin, the author, uses many different celebrities, books including his own writings, and examples to meet or exceed your expectations. This is a time when he was married as well, 2021, shortly thereafter he divorced. yet he still helps married couples or relationships.
I felt the earlier chapters didn't fully register or help per se; but when he got to part 3 of the book, I started to find it relatable but still not the best advice in some cases. He used "emotional intelligence 2.0" which is a book either in our library or book list to be ordered, where we have to voice our expectations (or boundaries) in a relationship, they cannot be unsaid, or unvoiced because no one can assume, imply, or even read your mind in most cases--then you get easily upset, offended because of it. No one is perfect, but you can perfect things in the relationship.
I disliked strongly that he didn't touch on "covenant relationships" in this "Live Free" book. I also laughed how he referred to many celebs as his "good friend" and shook my head not so much to disbelief but like really, all of them are not only your friend but also "good". True friendships are hard to come by and live by.
"It's not them, it's you" chapter can be beneficial whether in a romantic relationship or not. Yet I liked this passage the most, "in a relationship we have a responsibility to affair proof or union by addressing our partners unmet hunger." You cannot imagine or guess, be bold and confident to let your partner know. It is not how much you have sex but how they make you feel, and quality of the sex, it's intimacy and romance is best. Role play. Furthermore, I agree that you should be satisfied and quality sex, blessed to meet that, but only thing for him to work on is intimacy: "in-2-me."
Clean your glasses (sub-chapter) speaks on how challenging communication can be-express your relational expectations, which offers great deal of vulnerability. I have sought out just that from my partner, to be more open not so closed, and share with me not others where I would hear it indirectly; as the book expressed, I have felt negative emotions; can lead to judgment or unwarranted anger which smudge lenses instead of seeing clearly.
Overall, you can glean something from this book as a whole. It was a decent read but wasn't a great or spectacular one.
Sidenote: I see the copyright date, or the book came out 2 days after my bday!...more

He shares the abuse watched in the home, inability to learn about relationships including masculinity, true toughness, and religious scope of it all. He calls his mother a hypocrite, teen mother, whom they called Trish not mom. Mama Z is a great aunt who was most like a mother figure in his life, and Mama was his grandmother (material mother’s mom). He did not really know his father’s side of the family. He dealt with porn, addictive behaviors from watching porn, and terrified to date or meet girls due to his mother’s take on dating—either God or lure into temptation. He speaks on Christianity as a cult, then joining football team also felt like another form of being in a cult and facing these cultural things and how it isolated his growth and maturity in his younger years. He touches on mental health related issues, generational curses, and how to become a man himself—learn his true self we all do when in toxic relationships even if it is from our childhood or parents.
I plan to read his other title “Manhood” to see if it will help or cultivate the “I See Her” support groups.
He spoke against his parents for his upbringing, toxicity in household and Adam grabbing on his genial area but shocked he didn't fire on the man than allegedly file sexual assault but didn't get the apology he expected. Christianity thingy hit me that his views are quite off, but aware of some of the things go on in a black church or black experience in the church yet find Christ for you....more
