I knew I was in trouble at the start with the language that was being used. It made me recall that I didn’t enjoy Huckleberry Finn either when I had to read it at school. I felt that this book didn’t have enough structure for me and it was really a rapid series of different adventures. It was also far from subtle as someone else has said “all white people are evil and all black people are PhD level orators who dream in French.”
Not the book for me, but many people seem to have loved it
Sometimes you have to accept that an author is not for you. I tried the Essex Serpent several times but never managed to get very far with it. I thought I would try again with Enlightenment as so many people praise her writing. I tried, I really did but I did not find enlightenment as to why so many people enjoy her writing. Not for me, but I suspect I am the one losing out here.

Held starts with a soldier injured in WW1 unsure whether he will die or survive. Written in short, somewhat unconnected paragraphs, the book follows John’s memories and then his family - finally ending in 2025.
