I enjoyed this, though not quite as much as I would have expected given the nexus of the Scarlet Pimpernel and Cogman's imagination. To some extent, I think it was my distaste for vampires that got in the way.

She's supposed to be brilliant with computers, but seems baffled at the idea that someone could spoof the club's emails in order to phish for information.
Perhaps the most irritating moment for me was when she described phishing to someone and they said "Fishing?" She corrected it to "Phishing."
1. These people are talking. You can't see how someone spells something from how they say it. 2. He's supposed to know stuff about cyber crime!
Bah. There are the seeds of a good character here, but it didn't come off right to me.

Other parts didn't work well. I don't feel like I know the characters, Pop is almost villainous, and *sigh* Big Misunderstanding. *headdesk*
Though in defense of the author, she handles the Big Misunderstanding pretty well. We could even debate whether it's a Big Misunderstanding at all. We could, perhaps, thumb-wrestle over it....more

Some minor confusion at references in-book to a previous mystery, but nothing that makes this book hard to grasp.
I liked the setting and most of the characters. The mystery itself was a bit blah. One plot bit with a person with anger issues felt badly skewed and overly sympathetic despite horrible motives.
I will also state that I would resist even trying chocolate and beetroot muffins....more
Not without flaws and Julius is way too much of a Gary Stu, but it's very entertaining and fun. I'll happily read further in the series. Not without flaws and Julius is way too much of a Gary Stu, but it's very entertaining and fun. I'll happily read further in the series....more
