After one horrible novel (Fantasy Lover), one boring short story (Dragonswan), and two other mediocre novels (Night Pleasures and Night Embrace), I finally loved one of these books! Okay I'm cheating a little since I did like The Beginning a lot but does that chapter even count? Back on topic, this is the first time that one of these Dark Hunter books has engaged me from start to end. I'm just so excited that I didn't get into this series for nothing.
Zarek, a former Roman slave, has to be one of the most tortured heroes I've ever read about. From the moment he was born, he wasn't wanted and was treated as something lower than scum. Never knowing kindness, compassion, friendship, happiness, and love...that is until Astrid, a nymph who's sent to judge whether or not he should die. The romance was amazing. There was something so sweet and innocent about his relationship with her. She's the one person who actually got through to him, made him feel human. They also had these little references to The Little Prince. I think that was my only regret, not having read that book before though I've always meant to.
I admired the twist at the end regarding how Zarek became a Dark Hunter and how unique and special he is. All the suffering he went through, it's extremely tragic and unfortunate. It proves how strong he is, to have endured all those years of being wronged both in his mortal and immortal life.
A lot of great secondary characters in this book. Jess, Sasha, Otto, Syra, and few others are introduced in this book. Simi, who was introduced in The Beginning, had a small role in here. She's really quite endearing and has such a close relationship with Acheron. Speaking of, I was fascinated with all the new facts about him. And the similarity noted about him and Zarek's background is heartbreaking to hear but I think that makes him much more intriguing.
Sherrilyn Kenyon's writing still leaves more to be desired (at least they didn't have as many corny teenage thoughts...Grace, Sunshine, I'm talking to you). I don't know about these other books coming up. It's a very tough act to follow and I'm not sure they'll live up to this one....more

It was an overall good story with some fun characters. I thought the best parts were the couple's quiet moments in "their room". My favorite scene, while not in the den, was at the doorway where not one word was spoken between the two. I thought it powerful and it actually gave me some chills. So all in all, I'd say this is a 3.5 for me. ...more

With each book of the series I'm finding that I enjoy the b-storylines more. Dark Hunters, Were Hunters, Daimons, Gods...they all intrigue me. The romances, not so much. If the characters didnlt always have the "I wanna jump your bones 24/7. Wow you're so hot" mentality, I'd like these books more. Some of their thoughts give me secondhand embarrassment. And trust me, I'm not a prude. I do like sensuality and steamy books but come on. It's a good thing I like the history of these characters a lot (favorite parts were when I was learning more about Ash) and find them interesting or I probably would have put these down. ...more

The beginning was a bit ridiculous and I almost put the book down. A sex slave trapped in a book for two thousand years and the only way to break the curse is to have an all night sex marathon? Seriously? Though, to be fair, I was asking for it since it's clear in the description what this novel would be about. The plot was quite predictable the entire way through. I thought the Greek mythology would spike my interest but it just fell flat. Overall, it did keep me somewhat amused. You know when something is so cheesy and bad but you can't help but keep watching, that's how I felt when I kept reading this. Considering the popularity of the books I'll try one or two more to see if the series gets any better. ...more

Two of my favorite minor characters from the Kate Daniels series get together, what more could I ask for? Raphael and Andrea team up to find out who stole the body of Aunt B's mate. Add in a little sexual tension, Greek mythology and a terminally ill and desperate Master of the Dead and you get a fun, entertaining read.
The Greek mythology was fun since that's the pantheon I know best. Turns out Aunt B's mate was one of Hades' priests who kept Persephone's apples guarded on Earth whenever they grow. Some dying Master of the Dead wanted to become immortal and snatched Aunt B's mate and his nephew.
While I love Kate to death, it was nice getting a different POV. Andrea's past made me feel horrible for her. I'm impressed with what she's accomplished thus far. It's a great feat. Then there's sweet, persistent, charming Raphael. I adore him to pieces. I think these two match together SO well. As they said, they do have their hangups but they'll be able to make it. I'm sure of that.
And from one of the past books, Kate let's Andrea call in her favor from Ghastek. It was interesting to see him teaching Journeymen in training. Interesting insight on piloting a vampire. For example you have keep top shape cognitively over the vampires at all times. If you get fear of contact with a dead mind, it overturns you and can make you into a human vegetable. Yikes.
I really enjoyed that ending with Kate and Terry Jo. Again Kate is awesome, I like that her power makes her immune to Persephone's apples. Even cooler is to hear that Curran's power is even older than Kate's. Nice. I can't wait to read book 4 now.

3 stars for Nalini Singh's Angels' Judgement. Read 12/12/10
This short story is based on Sara and Deacon. We get a glimpse of what Sara was like as a hunter right before she gets the Guild director job. And finally a little background on Deacon which was nice since he barely had a part in book 1. He's one of those typical broody loners but he and Sara seemed well matched.
Some good humor...the bar and the first appearance of Elena. LOL! The ending was very cute and overall it's a good read....more

As much as I like that sort of atmosphere, I found it hard to get into the story. I was a little more interested in the secondary characters more than the main ones if truth be told. I did get on board with the romance but only towards the end. NS was only scratching the surface of Elena and Raphael's relationship. The twist at the end is great set up to the next book though. I actually had trouble warming up to the pairing until the second half of the book. Those last chapters had me tearing up but they really sealed the deal for me.
More history of Silence and the Forgotten. I liked the outside POV provided by Zarina's letters (pretty interesting to read a little on the Adelaja's). It was nice hearing about the first rebels as well. And then on the more recent family history of Dev... Massey and Sarita, holy cow that was sad and tragic. It was a double punch to see that he and Katya mirrored that in a way.
The kids! They know how to make me smile and tug at my heart. Jon with Noor saying she's marrying Keenan and she spilling the beans that he likes Rina. Good stuff. Then Judd and Noor. It was an cool twist to have a similarity like the 'weaving'. Additionally Noor and Keenan's gifts when put together...amazing. Then there was also William and Judd. How much more can I love that guy? Guh.
While on the topic of Judd, he really does have the best connections. That scene with him, Xavier (heartbreaking background story), and the Ghost is so captivating. Can I get a book based just on them? Goodness knows it'd be a great read.
And lastly I'd like to mention Vasic. I don't care, I think he has a lot of potential. Please let him have a book. LOL. Been curious about him since book 5.

Now how about that first scene between Mercy and Riley? Hot damn! The chemistry was off the charts smoking! This book has such a fitting title. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the psy/changeling matches (well ok not all of them) and they all had some steamy scenes but it was really intense between these two. It's a definite welcome to see a pairing between a DarkRiver and a SnowDancer especially dominants like Mercy and Riley. They could actually play in both forms and even relate to each other since they held similar positions in their respective pack. There was that same sort of bantering I've seen in the previous books but this one did have a different pace with the relationship. I'm also satisfied with the ending about which pack they had loyalty to.
I loved finally getting a POV of a dominant female changeling. Mercy was badass, and it was just so nice to get this sort of perspective since we haven't really seen it before. She more than held her own in this book. Oh, P.S., I loved her brothers!
As much as I loved Lucas and Dorian, Riley was definitely giving them a run for their money. I mean HE MADE HER A NEST; echoing what Mercy said: "aw". Hee! He got jealous of the two sentinals which cracked me up. Then how sweet was it when Riley went to Mercy's when he had a nightmare? Also the fact that he offered to leave his pack. So many good moments from this man. Oh, and I can't forget the teasing from his siblings TOO!! It had me cracking up.
In terms of pack scenes, there were a lot of great moments. Jules and Rome distracting Willow. The pranks between the juveniles. Dorian and Sascha. I'm so happy for Sascha and Luc; that's going to be fun in the future. I'm very intrigued with the book she got from Nikita, plus the whole x-psy topic.
I loved the little bits of Hawke. Still charming yet hardheaded as ever. I feel so bad about him losing 'the one' when he was younger but there's no denying something's going on between him and Sienna. Speaking of, her scene with Sascha was heartbreaking. Even so, I do think it was a good idea for her to get some space. And OOOOH at the epilogue. I'd like to think it's just a friendship though, just something to stir up some trouble. In my opinion, it'll be a lot of fun.
And lastly I want to mention the council/alliance/ghost side stories going on because they all were compelling. This book was feeding my assumptions that Kaleb may be the Ghost. And I sense some cracks from that scene when the ghost talked to Judd. The murder plots, the chips, Bowen, Tatiana...it's been adding a lot to the overall plot of these books. ...more
This book kept me far more engaged than the last one! It was SO GOOD.
Falling for the enemy! I don't think there could've been a better match for DoriThis book kept me far more engaged than the last one! It was SO GOOD.
Falling for the enemy! I don't think there could've been a better match for Dorian than Ashaya. It was fun to see them butting heads, especially with Dorian testing her, mocking her. Their bond grew and when it went to that next level, there was still a touch of humor. They also had this emotional aspect of their relationship that was extremely touching. I liked seeing Dorian fight his revenge and guilt. He's come so far from the first book. Ashaya and her twin made for great stuff and it touched my heart. The epilogue: perfect.
I liked that Nalini added these young characters into the mix, this going back to Jon and Noor from Mine to Possess. It was great to be introduced to Keenan who made Dorian so much more endearing. It was also fun reading those little bits of the younger generation of the pack like Kit (it was a hoot when he was at Tammy's), Jamie, Desiree, Aaron, etc.
All the other pack stuff was still A+ as well. Tammy is most definitely the mother hen with Sascha coming in a close second. Mercy aka Miss Bikini Babe was a riot, I love her character. Lucas and Sascha! I was so happy to see more of them in this book.
I missed the SnowDancers (Mercy and Riley next!!!!). Just that hilarious mention of Hawke wasn't enough. I love that dynamic between him, Sascha and Lucas. He's such a charmer! It will be so amazing when he gets his book. The teasing he'll get from Lucas will be comedy gold, I'm sure.
And lastly I'd like to mention the Psy/Council/rebellion part of the story. To think I started out not really caring, even skimming parts, but now I'm captivated. It's getting so interesting, especially the added spin with the Human Alliance.

It was interesting reading this for the second time—I'd probably go with a 3.5 star rating. The romance didn't appeal to me as it did when I first read it. I just didn't care that much. The storyline with the Council, virus, rebellion, and twin revelations did keep my interest though. Also any Pack moments were great as always. However, what I found really fun were those firsts: first appearances of those two assassin Psy I've grown attached to as the books go on, and first mention of that certain platinum star charm. ...more
