i absolutely loved the whimsy of this soft magic system. The James family each have a gift and our MC linden the emotions of those around her. The town has always been a little uneasy of the odd family, except of someone gets sick or is otherwise in need, of course they'll ask for help.
Every year the turn holds the moth festival to honor the longest standing folklone of the turn, the moth man. He is an omen of death. And that folklore is held in even higher because 17 years ago, a four year old boy went missing. And last year, something happened to linden on the woods she still can't remember.
A small town mystery with of whimsical magic? Sign me up. This book didnt disappoint....more

By far my most anticipated release of the year, and it didn’t disappoint! This series has blown me away from book one and the finale was painful, enraging, pure ecstasy, the triumph, every emotion you can think of. I will definitely revisit in the future to relive this series.

Following Jani who cares for her younger sister in the big town off the coast from their hometown island, the Hotel Magnifique is returning with all the magic and hope the world has to offer. Taking their once in a lifetime chance, the two sisters audition for jobs and by luck they are able to get into the Hotel Magnifique, the only place magic is safe and allowed to flourish.
Explained as for fans of the The Night Circus and Caraval, I was hopeful this would be for me. While I found Caraval underwhelming, The Night Circus stole my heart on a whimsical playground throughout that story. Unfortunately so far, this just missed the mark. I’m chasing a high that I think is hard to come by. While the plot points are there, the whimsy was missing in the writing. The mystery is there but it felt too obvious to start with for our Jani to be so naive from. And our sister relationship didn’t have any foundation before the going gets tough.
I found this book hasn’t been holding my interest and I never care to pick it up. Unfortunately my first DNF (did not finish) of the year for me....more

We follow Eli who when she as 5 her mother took her out to the middle of the glacier range near their home in Norway and then ... disappeared. Now a senior in high school, Eli is noticing odd magical things happening around her. And she also got a note that her mother is trying to contact her.
From there, this book caught me. We have feathers in lockers and narwhals showing up on the coast of Maine, 3 magical princesses, and a storybook of the history of the family. I absolutely loved it. If you're a fan of Katrina Leno's writing or The Last True Poets of the Sea, this book fits right into that category of magical realism....more

Reading this story, everything we learn of the brujx culture felt deeply researched, and the trans (own voices) rep was wonderful to see on the page.
I loved the characters and their relationships, and the plot was also exciting and fun! I loved the pacing too. For how many things happen in this story, I felt everything was nicely timed. It didn't feel rushed or anything like that.
My one knock is that we do have a character that has some potentially worrisome anger issues where that individual struggles to control his temper. It never felt like this was addressed and I wish we had taken some time to at least recognize it as something to work on.
Such a beautiful story, and I can't wait to pick up Aiden Thomas' next novel.

It was fine, and the teenage friendships that were good were great. I felt like this book attempted to say something about difficult subjects, and while I did appreciate some of the way those subjects were wrapped up in the end, I didn't love how they were portrayed throughout the story. I also felt like the friendship between Liss and Dan wasn't worth saving so the entire interpersonal part of this story was just meh.
The magic was cool, although I also wish we had more of it and less of everything else. I would've liked to get to know the wardens better.
