I loved the magic element, and the solution they arrived at was lovely.
All of her books are like big warm hugs and I love them all!...more

This was my SECOND Tessa Bailey novel and I would have to say that I was really quite enamored with it. I will definitely be picking up more of them! The audio narration on this was top-notch and the snark and hilarity...also top-notch. I literally laughed out loud, and also cried at my desk at work, so thank you for that Tessa Bailey...you're a peach. ...more

Well, you'll have to wait for book I grabbed this ARC because I was so incredibly curious about a ghost romance and whether or not it would be spicy! Well, you'll have to wait for book 2 for that answer. There was some intent, but no delivery in book 1.
I would file this one as more of a Romantic Suspense maybe? There was a lot if investigative work being done trying to figure out a mysterious death. This book was fantastic, I enjoyed reading it, but it's definitely a slow burn.
The main story element (of this book) is resolved in this book, but there is an over-arcing storyline that is NOT resolved in book 1 involving one of the main characters. You'll have to keep reading for resolution on that plot point, presumably. There is fantastic worldbuilding, I liked how her mother had dealt with the issue her whole life, and the MC figured out a different way almost immediately. Her sister is a fantastic resource. I just really enjoyed how it all fit together. ...more

God I love TS's books.

(Alcohol is a major plot point) This poor girl gets drugged via her wine a couple of times, once willingly, but still....the poor thing. The bad alien types are all over the place and the good alien guy is all alone trying to ferret them out and get to the root of the issue.
In the middle of it all...he finds his mate. I really liked the story line here, and the cover sold it for me. The pulp feel of the cover grabbed me and never let go. LOVE IT. (All three covers I've seen so far are amazing.)...more

I probably would have read it anyway, but probably wouldn't have finished it. I was so slow in parts that I *literally* made the "get on with it" gesture many times. We hear about the same "bad guys" over and over stalking her, or maybe stalking her, we hear about the decay, but she forgets all about that for half the book until (view spoiler)[she goes into the city (which makes NO SENSE, it makes her horribly vulnerable), and sees that the decay has progressed horribly. (hide spoiler)] The romance/sex portions I didn't really have an issue with (like many of the other reviews seemed to take issue with?), the book is a fated mate/dark romance. There are trigger warnings listed. I went in with eyes wide open for what was going to happen...also...it's BABA YAGA! She supposedly eats children. What did you expect? I didn't mind that some of the romance moved at a fast clip, nor did I mind the kinkier side.
Nox...now that is a problem child. LOL. He was just annoying and RUDE as all get out. You can dislike someone, or disagree with the plan without being outright disrespectful to their face. He is a douche.
Cliffies...I knew it had one, states it at the beginning, but OMG... (view spoiler)[ literally threw the whole ending in the trashcan. Good gravy. Nothing was accomplished in the first book. Not one thing. Oh wait...she screwed two dudes. That's it. (hide spoiler)] I'm all for writing a series and continuing a story, but the blatant dumpster fire you have to read the next book because I threw everything into flames ending is just....UGH.
The writing style was fine, the grammar was fine, the story was intriguing. I just had issues with pacing and the ending choices. LOL...more

You'll get happy with these characters, and sad with these characters, and then there will be the times when you just want to reach into the book and slap some sense into them. Did he really just say that? Did SHE really just say THAT???? lol. These two were just so in their own heads it was amusing. There were also some *nice* spicy scenes. I'm not typically a contemporary reader, and this book still held my attention (in fact, I read it in one sitting!). I wanted to strangle Jason, but maybe that's just me. :)...more

The cover? The title? I don't know...the blurb sounded interesting, but it just didn't grab me. For the record, I am a hardcore sci-fi/fantasy romance reader, so this isn't surprising. BUT... Joanie swore I would love this book.
She wasn't wrong. I sent her a photo of my kindle about 3% in, just of a random paragraph and she sent back, "You're FINALLY reading Alice Winters?!?!!!" She's been reccing her for a LONG ass time, y'all.
Anyhow, the BOOK! It was funny! Lachlan was a breath of fresh air, just silly and such a jackass, it was so sweet. The comic relief moments when he doesn't know what to do with his feelings...my heart. Jackson, this man, how his face must have *hurt* from smiling all of the damn time. From showing off his butthole...I mean...jumping over fences, to NOT punching his homophobe mother in the face, this man has quite the range of talents. Also, there is a lot of action since you know...one guy is a hitman and the other is a detective/police consultant.
Seriously, this book is laugh out loud funny, you'll be grinning at your kindle....more
