Billy’s voice is incredibly strong and pulls the reader in immediately. Compelling isn’t the right word. Compulsive. I couldn’t stop reading. I enjoyed this book completely and I want more.
I think the blurb does the book a disservice. This is a story about Billy’s rough childhood and teen years, how he got to prison and how photography saved him from a life of petty crime. The blurb makes it sound like this is a story about a grown man struggling to care for a small child. Dillon only enters the picture in the last 10% of the book. This is a story all about Billy’s coming of age. ...more

A Compelling Whodunit
I was given a copy of the this book in exchange for an honest review.
The pace and the plot of this story is compelling and sweeps you right along. The dialogue is a little formal in the beginning but once the author finds her voice and gets comfortable, all the characters really come alive. Chrissie (the deceased) was a horrible person and the reader can really feel the anger and dislike she inspired. Everyone in this Scottish border town has a secret, even the main character. I think the main joy of this novel was watching Zoe tease out the secrets and then, finally , reveal her own. This was a satisfying mystery that kept me guessing until the end. ...more

Emily's neighbor, Victoria, is receiving threatening letters. Victoria is afraid it's tied to the embarrassing video she made back in college. No, not that kind of video.
The characters are quirky and enjoyable. The writing is over-wrought in some places and that slows down the narrative but the story rests on the strength of the characters. I look forward to reading more about Emily and Dr. Muriel. ...more

Take my review with a grain of salt, if you like, but I've always admired Abigail's writing chops. It's not an exaggeration to say she is one of my favorite writers.
This story is short but fun. It's steamy in the right places and surprisingly when I thought it was going to get repetitive. I wish I could write something as joyful and I'm a little jealous.

The story starts rather dry with little to distinguish this from any other police procedural. Then the magic happens on Snowdon Mountain. The characters come alive, the prose starts to sing and everything works. The mystery was compelling and I was constantly bouncing between suspects, certain each one was the killer. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. ...more
