Thank you Goodreads for picking my name to win this book. Tara Clancy narrates the story of her Irish-Italian family background in Queens, N. Y. There are some laugh out loud moments when Tara describes her grandmother and great aunt. They all live together in a large home. The events are true, taken from the diary and notes of the Zookeepers wife Antonina Zabinska. Antonina had a special gift with the care of animals; even keeping the babies in her home. The Zoo became a refuge for many people, young and old, who had no home left nor nothing to eat They saved over three hundred lives. He and his family were from Poland. In 1939 they were moved to a Ghetto, then after that they put on a train to Auschwitz. Terry lost all his family and friends. Once he got separated from the other children and stayed all night with a former neighbor man. That action saved his life. After liberation he smuggled Jews out of Germany to board a ship to Isreal. A true hero. I applaude the author for writing this true story from his grandfather's memory. "Lest we forget"...more

A patient came to her and said the Russians will be here soon. She in turn used these simple words and spread then around the camp. He told her to neer forget and to tell the world, so these things will never happen again. She wrote this book so all would remember. She was the only one remaining in her family after the liberation in 1945. ...more
