However the author didn’t reflect on it much on the experience. I am sure I’d do the same, but they got so caught up with the people they wanted to be with and getting with a man who was honestly TRASH and so mean to her. Really admire the journey they went on, just felt they had quite a sad time throughout....more

InteresI randomly stumbled upon this book on audible and really enjoyed it. It was interesting to read about the author and her life in a camper van. Interesting the way she felt she had to try so hard to reject the “expected life”. Having a pup myself I was hit so hard with the story regarding her dogs injury.
Have since looked at her social media, and all she has been dealing with regarding harassment for years, really feel for her....more

This started out as an interesting walk through the national parks and turned into the main character having a full breakdown & literally hating the whole trip??
Who writes about having a shower and the wet tendrils of red hair on their breasts, literally what. She’s one second saying she’ll let the boomers die of covid so she can go on her trip then the next second texting the ex saying he needs to smash her so hard in penance for going on her trip?? Then the next they break up and shes wailing over the wheel wanting to crash the van…
There were moments of nice adventurous vibes, but this trip sounded like an absolute disaster and the main character seems so selfish. WHOOOO writes about themselves and calls them self a “manic pixie girl” like ok. ...more

I felt quite sorry for the author, it seems like every career path she tries people put her down, her husband seemed to barely have time for her throughout and I was sad to see that by the end of the book she still seemed unhappy in her life. I hope she’s continuing to grow and find herself and that she find some more supportive people in her life....more

We follow the author on her through hiking journey across the PCT, this is after she is raped at college. You can’t judge sometimes growth, but this was a very painful read. She was so alone and unsupported. Her mum is abusive I would say, leaving her no autonomy and being so controlling, but then also basically abandoning her when told about the rape. So horrible to read about. I was glad to see in the epilogue where the author ended up, not sure I’d recommend or at least wouldn’t recommend such a risky journey....more

I couldn’t get it out of my mind for years so I finally read the book, and it also sparked a love of reading books by others doing long hikes. I am thankful for this story and I think it was adapted really well.
Enjoyable, of course I am biased because it’s a book which sparked a new interest for me. I think it would have been 5 stars if it had only been about the hike along the PCT, but a lot of these books jump around in time so it was to be expected that we learn about the authors life before....more

II have mixed feelings about this book, and I do think if the author hadn’t been an actor I’ve enjoyed watching then I’d likely have enjoyed it less. It covered important topics, as well discussions about nature which I love and appreciate. It just felt a bit clunky, with too many quotes from other books and diversions off into lectures about topics (that are important I must add, and I do hope that people will read it and learn).
It felt like we got surface level discussions of issues and despite this road trip around America and hikes etc, the reader just wasn’t transported into the settings. It was addressed in the writing, but it did feel a bit off to be trying to push the outdoors and people connecting with spaces but then having multiple instances of judging others. Many hypocritical moments and I’m not sure just stating that you know you can be hypocritical really covers it if you then publish the thoughts....more

I was really enjoying until the author took every opportunity to slag every form of contraception that isn’t just taking your temperature & hoping for the best? Of course a book will heavily be influenced by the authors opinions, but I felt like with all the research done for other sections the author could have tried to include more information, even if she isn’t in favour of things like the pill....more

I did really enjoy reading about women throughout history and meeting some I’d never read about before.
Oddly, the authors had such a judgemental tone throughout which was weird and very out of place in a book about remarkable women. They made subtle digs about everything from feminists who use moon cups to social media users to health food trends?? It felt like it was written by women who judge younger feminists and that really added a sour note to the book. Not sure why these odd comments weren’t edited out!
Also the use of slang and what I guess was supposed to be text talk? There were so many moments I had no clue what they were trying to say due to what I assume was an attempt to make it an easier read for younger teens?? This happened before in another book about badass women in history... I just don’t see the need! ...more
"Coorie offers a familiar newness, a fresh take on an old word..."
The above quote from the book really sums up how I felt about the book. I really enjoyed it and the way Bennett wove examples from around Scotland into her new definition of the word coorie. It was definitely a little odd at the start, simply as it's a new concept for me, but I definitely recommend if you enjoy these kind of books. I look forward to seeing more books from Bennett in the future....more
