4.5 stars. Absorbing, thrilling, almost perfect romantic suspense:

A Greek-American heroine (I'm not above admitting that exponentially increased my enjoyment of the book). Bonus points for not making her temper a cliché, but something that she worked to control.
◆ A privileged hero who found success on merit, as opposed to said privilege, but was willing to use his connections for good (so definitely a fantasy, but I guess that's the point).
Edgy and gritty, but not gory or salacious.
◆ Plenty of twists and turns.
◆ Not letting the inconvenient attraction between Ava and Dominic manifest at totally inappropriate times. I wanted to see more overt tension-building and exploration of their chemistry before they got together, but I appreciated that the focus stayed on the suspense element.

The climax, however, occasionally made me roll my eyes (especially having a woman walk within minutes of labor).

I'm confused, because I apparently DNF the first book of the series for which this is a spin-off. Not only that, but the main characters from that book appear here, and I liked them! Maybe I was in a bad mood that day, or the author has improved, or there was some other weird quirk. Regardless, I'll definitely revisit the original series because this? This was right up my alley.
