Muse (Muse #1)

I will admit that I almost dnf-ed this book a bunch of times, but it always managed to suck me back in. Considering that this is the author's first book, I'm being more generous with the rating than I might be otherwise. The quality of writing itself is pretty good and the book is well edited. However, it was pretty confusing and seemed to want to be too many things at once. The story is told via time jumps between ten years ago and the present. I never really felt fully connected with the characters and their motivations. What is it about Piper that warranted Lio's obsession? I also had a hard time buying his reasons for staying away from his "muse" for ten years and letting another man be with her. This is the same man who is hell-bent on impregnating Piper so she can never leave him. On her end, Piper seemed to jump from wanting to run away to being desperate to stay with alarming frequency. I will say that I was definitely there for Lio's obsessive manipulative behavior. It was that content that reeled me back in every time I was ready to give up. Overall, this was too long, too heavy on the convoluted yet completely unbelievable plot, yet somehow compelling in parts. I hope the author continues in this vein but refines her work and I'm looking forward to Mark's book.
