Contrary to most of the 5-star reviewers, I loved the first half of the book and hated the second.
In the first half we get some drama and maybe a hint of mystery; our protagonist is looking for her long-lost father and it's very interesting to watch from the side-lines as she goes into a deep dive and does everything, she can, to find him. It turns out there are a load of possibilities for her father and exploring them takes some time. It really dragged me into the rabbit hole with the protagonist Rachel, wondering who it might be.
Then for some unforgivable reason (I read some 5-star reviews, and yes, I get the reason from Lehane's point but not mine as a reader), we get a completely different story; with a completely different plot, different style of writing and a whole heap of characters most of whom turn out to be some completely different characters they give the impression of being. We forget about the drama/mystery of searching for Rachel's father and we go down this Mission Impossible action movie with a really bad main character for it, and we get a hint of murder murder death kill murder.
Rachel sucks as Tom Cruise in a female version of Mission Impossible and, this second half of the book is not the reason I kept picking this book up repeatedly like under a spell or obsessed.
And, after all of this, the ending, man, not worth it for even the ending.
