Sphere is a classic sci-fi thriller by one of the men who does it best. It follows a military mission to the depths of the ocean after an alien ship in the shape of a sphere is located.

Our main characters are Norman a psychologist, Harry a Mathematician, Ted an astrophysicist, Beth a biochemist and Arthur a marine biologist. These people were hand picked by the military to be on the mission to examine and figure out what this sphere is.

After the Sphere is opened and Harry enters and returns events turn from bad to worse as our characters communicate with the entity from the sphere.

It contains monsters of the deep, deteriorating interpersonal relationships, time travel, black holes, plenty of science talk and an overwhelming feeling of dread and claustrophobia.

Not the best Crichton but right up there with his top works.
