Unexpected style, that doesn’t make sense until the end. 🤔
So, I think for the most part, it’s all, already been said, and way better than I could improve upon.
With that said, all I will add is that there were some parts that didn’t quite gel together for me, issues with character personality, but I suspect it’s a, agree to disagree thing, and truthfully, it’s not enough to worry about.
Will I read again. No.
For reference, one of my all time favs is R. E. Fiest’s ‘Magician’ series. Have re-read many times, and will do so again.
I can honestly say however, that this is somewhat better written.
It’s beautiful, amazingly well written, engaging, etc.. I’m so glad I did read.
But still won’t read this again. It’s too sad, for too large a portion for my preference. I can’t do that much heartbreak, and hopelessness.
While the end does pick up, it’s all very bittersweet.
It’s essentially a drama, done in the epic fantasy world.
While most in this samurai style-world building, are dramatic, dark, intense, etc.. They also tend to spend more time on politics, intrigue, rituals, or other parts.
This focused primarily on the drama for large parts. Within the action, the characters, the world building, it was all heavily emotional.
I need more escapism from real world hurt and disappointments. I need to pretend that the good guys will win, that bad guys will be punished, and that while bad does exist, it’s not stronger than the hero’s. 😬🫣
Highly recommend that it be read at least once.
