Paula Hawkins is really the master of writing unlikeable characters, so you have to be in the right mood to read one of her books. It makes for good crime writing, because her books have so many potential who-did-its. She’s also a master of the moody physical setting. The Blue Hour really showcases these skills, and for most of my reading experience I found it compelling. I liked that she’s gone for quite a different angle than popcorn thrillers here too. Without being spoilery- the last quarter fizzled a bit for me, but it might just as easily satisfy another reader.
