it was ok

Maybe 1️⃣ rounded up to 2️⃣ because the beginning started out so promising! I thought it would be five star read. Hannah does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere. I thought I was in Vietnam, the descriptions were so vivid. She does excellent research for her novels and I love all the historical elements.

This is where I think I’m more of a historical fiction reader than a romance reader. I don’t mind romance at all, but I love historical stories best. This quickly went downhill. What episode of some ‘80’s prime time soap did I just witness?

I’m not sure I’ve eye rolled reading a book as much as I did this one. Frankie started out promising and turned into a character I couldn’t stand. I felt nothing for her or her friends. Frankie’s mother might have been the only character that kind of grew on me. I feel like I’ve had similar experiences with Winter Garden and The Four Winds. Parts of both of those were five star reads for me, while other parts felt like one star. The Great Alone has been the only one of Hannah’s that I have read that was a consistent great read. Obviously this is my opinion, I’m sure many others will love this book. I’m not giving up on Hannah, I think she does a great job of writing about another time, maybe she’ll write a character I like at some point.
