If I had to pick a single word to describe this book that word would be 'convoluted'. While things get tied together at the end it is not a plot that would hold together in anything other than book-land.
This is still a YA read (older YA, but YA) with some older themes (sex is implied not explicit), a death, and lots of family angst.
