i absolutely devoured this book, ate it up so quickly. there's just something about olivie blake's novels that hold my attention even when i don't particular love a plot point or a character or the pacing gets too slow.
➵ marya and dima absolutely own my entire heart, their tragic lives make what they found at the end so much more beautiful. i think marya is my favourite character here, that eldest daughter who has the world on her shoulders for her mother and younger siblings, and has the right to go a little batshit sometimes <3
➵ the comedy works most when the bridge is on the page, it was so funny to watch him as witches burst into his office left right and centre, my man was so done with them all.
➵ i did not really care for sasha, there still isn't a strong reason i can pick out for this, i did not vibe with her character for the most part and often found her annoying, and i would have loved more depth for the rest of her siblings rather than a strong focus on her.
➵ the development for most characters worked really well for me, in particular roman - with his second-born son complex that drives him to extreme actions - and marya.

➵ the plot relies on the relationships between the two main families of the story, the antonova sisters and the fedorov brothers. the conflicts between these factions were nuanced and ran deep from decades of hatred - hence the romeo and juliet retelling - and made reading the book very easy and enjoyable.
➵ not always the most beautiful prose, but when referring to some of the relationships blake does a good job of showing their devotion to each other with her words.
