Rosalinde and Gray find themselves at the same inn while traveling during a bad snow storm. When there is an issue with Rosalinde’s room, Gray offers her his room and because they’re both single, hot and horny, winter themed bom chicka wow wow ensues. Afterwards, they separate and are convinced they will never see each other again. That is, until Rosalinde arrives at her sister Celia’s pre-wedding festivities, and she complains about her fiancé’s brother who’s been a massive jerk and then the jerk brother walks in and it’s GRAY 🙃 Did I mention that Gray is determined to break up Celia and his brother’s engagement?!?
This was a solid romance. Rosalinde is a widow and I love a widow heroine in historicals because they truly don’t GAF about reputations and are usually open to smexy shenanigans. Rosalinde’s first marriage was an unhappy one and Gray opens her up *snickers* to a whole new level of passion. Gray was an ok hero but he was a tad too overprotective. Even though he was worried about his brother Lucien-for good reason given his previous engagement-he was giving control freak for most of the book. I was shocked that he was younger than Lucien because he was giving STRONG eldest sibling energy 😂Lucien and Celia were going into this marriage with their eyes wide open; she needed a title and he needed her dowry, they never pretended that they were in love with each other! Thus, I never understand Gray’s hatred toward Celia because she wasn’t deceiving Lucien at all. On top of that, it’s clear that she’s a good person. I started to like him more once he got over himself but that only happened within the last 20 percent of the book 😭

Quotes Melanie THEE Reader Liked
“She was stunningly beautiful. Her dark hair was almost jet black, but her eyes were icy blue, piercing the room even from the distance between them. She was the kind of woman who men turned to stare at if she passed them on the street.”

“He held her stare a moment. She was right, of course. It was dangerous to speak of familiar things with a stranger, especially a stranger who he wanted so desperately to touch. But there was something about the circumstances, the oddity of being trapped together like this, that gave their meeting a sense of magic. Of freedom. Like there could be no consequences if he did and said exactly as he desired.”

“This is one night where we can give in to fate without consequences. Without censure or judgment. What do you say?”

“It was hers. Hers alone. It was too precious and private to share with anyone but the man she would never see again.”

“How did one approach one’s greatest enemy and deepest temptation? How did one flirt with the most confusing and appealing man in the room?”

“We are women under the control of men, Gray,” she said. “Of course I am vulnerable.”

“Stenfax’s lips thinned, and he slowly turned away from Gray and back toward Fitzgilbert. “I have asked you once to shut up, sir.”

“Gray threw him across the room, into a chair that shattered into splinters, and then he jumped on top of him. Rosalinde was free, safe, and it didn’t matter—because Gray was going to destroy this man. For threatening her, for hurting her, for trying to kill her. Gray was going to annihilate him.”

“I also hope at some point you tear down that wall around yourself and actually let the woman love you as she obviously does,” Lucien added as he turned his back and began to stack the papers on his desk.”

“I love you,” she said, her voice breaking. She cleared her throat and repeated it with more strength. “I love you, Gray. And I wanted to tell you that before we married, so that you know where I stand. Now, I don’t expect you to return those sentiments. But I wanted you to understand my heart so that we start out correctly.”

“Am I not making myself clear?” He dropped to his knees before her and leaned up into her. His arms came around her, tugging her close until there was nothing but breath between them. “I love you, Rosalinde Wilde. I may have tried not to love you, but I do.”

“I may be many things, but I’m not a liar. I love you.” “But you still frown,” she whispered, leaning in to press her lips to that frown. He returned the kiss briefly. “I do. Because I don’t know how to do this. To love you so that I won’t hurt you. So that I won’t disappoint you. So that I won’t make you regret giving me the precious gift of your heart.”

“Pain is inevitable in this life. But if you never risk the pain, you will also never find the joy or the pleasure or the true connection. You’ll never hurt me with ill intentions, never with cruelty. And I may hurt you in return out of misunderstanding or by accident. But more often than not, you’ll heal me. You’ll complete me. And I hope to do the same for you. That is life, that is love.”

“Celia once told me you live your life with your arms wide open,” he said, his voice soft and rough. “It is one of the things I have loved about you. Will you teach me how to do that?” She nodded. “It’s easy enough, my love. Just trust that you’ll survive the flight or the fall. And trust that I’ll always be there to catch you.”

“Gray’s dark gaze focused on her and the corner of his lip quirked up. “What have we talked about, Rosalinde? You shouldn’t read my mind where the servants could hear. They’ll start calling you a witch.”
