really liked it
bookshelves: sci-fi

If it's possible, this book is BETTER than the first one. This is just a great Sci-Fi book, wonderful worldbuilding, that focuses on CHARACTERS rather than every planet and ship and technical science thing in the world. Some of that stuff, while interesting, make big sci-fi for me a bit less compelling. This, however, has it ALL! And, contrasting with the first one, it is very clear about POV and stuff. The gender ambiguity is still there, but in a streamlined way, so you don't question things as much in your head. The plotting is excellent, and its just a great sci-fi read. Highly recommended for M/F looking for a good space drama that doesn't have a cast of thousands!

Andrew J. Why only 4/5? What was the drawback?

message 2: by David (new)

David Reichwein Sounds interesting. Just finishing up the Commonwealth saga by Hamilton and could use some sci-fi that's a little more personal and smaller in scope.

Michael Agreed - I think this one was better as well. I like how it honed the focus down and really brought out Breq's humanity - and her vision of what humanity should be.

Tristan Petrus I like the sound of it too,I am also just finishing the 39 clues book six doomsday

akasha randle eley posa once upon a time there was a princess and a prince for he had the faith of an important secret. The prince's name was Monique and the princesse's name was Rose. They had 3 days to get married'

akasha randle eley posa Don't you understand that there is no way to stop the dragon? Don't you know that we are being tore apart lim from lim? Don't you know that we must leave this village? Yes i do' but that should not stop you or me. No. it should not stop me all.Your right. But' don't you know that your mother is dead? Yes i do know thNoat. What kind of queation is that? Well' you see I've been lonely for the past few days. Well' actually like a few weeks. I suppose i'd better go ahead and leave.

message 10: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Harbour This was nominated for a Nebula. added to my reading wishlist.

Charles This is 'old wine in a new bottle' for the author. I've *much* prefer something new, than her re-cycling her previous book.

Marcelo Dawkins This book is great, and the whole series is fantastic too. But IMO saying that its better than Ancillary Justice is just a little too much. Ancillary Sword is way more slow and boring and why the hell Seivarden is not here?.

Matt Felicia: I love all your work, from 'Dr. Horrible' to your role-play in the Fate system with Wil, John, and Ryan. But, after reading this novel, I feel I have to tell you that, "so you don't question things as much in your head" is not praise of a Science Fiction novel, but a damning condemnation. And by definition, world building is the "every planet and ship and technical science thing in the world" stuff, so when that stuff goes away or fails to live up to scrutiny, the world building isn't "wonderful". I agree with you that this book focuses more on characters, and that's potentially fine. I just don't agree with you that that shift actually succeeded, and that the author was able to demonstrate the delicate and nuanced touch necessary to write a character focused drama. She was I think actually better when she focused more on ideas, as in the prior novel.

Tracy Felicia, I loved this book so much. I agree it was better than the first one. There was so much going on in this and I loved Breq so much I quit trying to figure out if she was male or female. There wasn’t as much action in this but Breq is growing so much as a person. Great review.

Christian Little confused with all the comments thinking 4/5 isn't an amazing rating.
