Meh. What mostly kept me reading this book was hoping to discover what all the fuss was about. Waters has wonderful gifts, but the book overall was kind of a lull with a hope that it might turn out to have been worthwhile. In the end, I was disappointed.

Jes Laini, did the ending of this book bring to mind what Tim Hallinan wrote about Agatha Christie's novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd? Something about how the doctor was revealed to be the murderer, and the literary world was in an uproar over Christie's sassy twist? Hallinan wrote that he thought Christie was breaking faith with the reader, holding too much back. I felt that way about this story. I love, love, love Sarah Waters, and I waited years for her new novel. Unfortunately, I just couldn't dig it.

I've heard her say that writing her first novel was a lovely experience that she'd live again if she could, so I just finished Tipping the Velvet, to visit her at her happiest. :)

Leona This is exactly how I felt about the book, 'Meh' perfect. The writer is so capable of creating atmosphere that every time I thought that finally something was going to happen, some twist in the narrative would create some excitement or explain something, and it never did I just got more and more frustrated.
