Freddie is a leaf on a tree, surrounded by other leaves. Daniel, the wisest leaf, explains to the others that their purpose in life is to provide shade for those on the ground. When autumn comes and the leaves begin to turn a variety of colors, then fall off, Daniel explains that dying is another stage of life. When Freddie detaches from his branch and floats down into the insulating snow below, he sees the entire tree for the first time. As his consciousness leaves he feels peaceful about his part in the endless cycle of birth, death, and re-birth.
