Bring the Heat (Dragon Kin, #9)

When I hear G.A. Aiken is publishing a new book my entire body perks up because I know I’m fixing to get a double dose of snarky dragons and for me, you just can’t have enough dragons. What I have had enough of is the continuing story arc of the war against the god Chramnesind and his thousands upon thousands of zealots. Truly, I was over them about two books ago.
The romance in this book centers around Brannie and Aiden. Brannie is the daughter of Ghleanna and Bram and she’s also Izzy’s best friend. Aiden is a royal dragon who also is a member the Mi-runach, the queen’s bat shit crazy but very loyal personal warriors. I’ve always loved Brannie, she’s insane on the battlefield and hilarious off it. Aiden is a newer character only around the last few books. We learned about his horrid family and history in book 8, Feel The Burn. He’s the voice of reason for his Mi-runach squad, keeping the crazy warriors from losing their heads. My problem is like the last few books, the romance took a backseat to the war storyline and for me at least, the book suffered for it.
With the war not going well at all, Brannie, Aiden, and his two squad members, Caswyn and Uther are sent on an impossible do or die mission with Keita. Brannie and Keita don’t get along mainly because Keita may be deadly but she’s also somewhat of a twit. Along the way they get stuck with some riders (who are my least favorite of all the characters in this series).
While they are on their mission, we also keep going back and forth to the POV’s of other characters. Annwyl has yet again found herself in another OTT crazy impossible situation and literally has to fight her way out of hell. Dagmar along with some of her creepy kids also get a fair amount of page time. I loved and hated these interruptions into Brannie and Aiden’s story. I enjoy time spent with beloved characters from other books, but hate that the war and all the other happenings literally hijacked the romance.
As happy as I am that this book finally wrapped up the Cult of Chramnesind story line, it ended up not being my favorite book of the series. The desperate mission, the war going bad, even some of the snarky fights all felt rather deja-vu-ish to me and I had a hard time staying engaged. The romance being treated more as an afterthought didn’t help much at all. It never really clicked with me even though some of the steamy stuff was hot. The final battle felt a bit rushed but I can’t say that bothered me. Truly, I was so over the whole cult thing, instead of a feeling of victory it was more of a “Thank goodness that’s over with so we can move on” sort of moment.
I still love this series and I love all the characters. This may be the end of the war, but it’s not the last of the Dragon Kin Series. I’m just hoping that future books will be more relationship oriented like the first ones. I love all the action, but I need more actual romance to balance the story out.
