Feyness (Red Order, #1)

I’ve had my eye on this book for awhile. I had no idea it was a dark book. I liked the cover, saw the glowing reviews and decided to tackle my TBR shelf.
Feyness is a standalone and each book will center one of the brothers.
I’m a pretty picky girl when it comes to dark books. It’s also hard for me to find one where I truly feel the “darkness”.
I thought Feyness was an okay book, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t grand. I read it in one sitting and that goes to show how interested I was.
Faye is forced to marry Cole, who is not a good man. He’s a powerful man in the mafia.
Okay, so I love the premise of the book. I’m a sucker for forced marriages and of course she’s a virgin! There was also some damsel in distress moments that I liked too.
But there was always something off with the story and I couldn’t put my finger on it. For one, the book is OVERLY descriptive, to the point where it was distracting. Less is more. Instead of just saying the characters walk into the room, it would be like this three-page ordeal of how the characters feel, and what the room looks like and some more on how the characters feel.
Edit the inner monologues out please.
I didn’t like the dialogue, it sounded too forced. No one talks like that. I rolled my eyes so many times during the book. I get that Cole is evil, but if I took a shot for every time I read the word blood or how much Cole loves blood I would be passed out dead.
I also liked reading how a man can be dark instead of a man telling me how dark he is. There’s a difference to that.
I liked the tension between Cole and Faye, but oh boy was this a slow burn book! I liked Faye being weak and submissive. As much as I love a strong Heroine, I do like a weak one. It’s really cheesy, but I gobble that stuff up.
So on the one hand I enjoy the premise, the cheese factor and some oh wow dark moments. It was interesting and kept me reading. On the other hand, a lot of the dialogue felt forced, the overly descriptive writing was distracting. So like I said. I liked it … sort of.
I will go on to the next book, which I think is about Grim. I’m a bit nervous as he is the most messed up brother but I’m too curious to not read it.
