There is a point in a reader's life, where after many dissapointing or forgetable books, you begin to think "That's it. I will no longer be able to find a book that amazes me.
And then, a book like The Witches of New York comes along, to prove to you that there's still hope.
This book had so many elements I like in a book: strong and likeable characters, vivid imagery, great writing, smart dialogue and more...
The first part was all about introducing the main and the side characters that we would get to see more of later on. Not only their names of course, but their strengths and their weaknesses as well and the demons that have been haunting them, both literally and metaphorically. The first chapters to me, marked the point when I started to like the three main characters and some of the side characters as well, like mrs Judith and dr Brody.
The second part was all about developing the magic system, where, along with the newborn witches, we became familiar with ghosts, spells and foresight and finally were able to see how strong those said witches are.
The third and final part was full of action and quite fast paced, in contrast to the first two parts. But it was equally good! And fortunately, after a few chapters of hardship, we had a happy ending. Happy and heartwarming.
Or did we?
Well, as much as I liked the book, I must admit that some key points have yet to be resolved. Likespoiler alert who's hidding behind the death of those servant girls at the hotel? Will their spirits finally be set free? What of the woman who cost Adelaide her eye? And most importantly, who's mr Palsham, who apparently is bigger and scarier of a villain than Reverend Townsend?
I haven't seen any mention of this book getting a sequel but I hope it does. It would be cruel of Ami McKay to leave us with no answers.
If you made it this far, congratulations and thank you for reading my review.
'Till next time, take care :)
