The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood

This book is likely most appropriate for 3-5 grade students. It is a story of a girl who is a little bit more fortunate than others so she does not get the first choice even though she needed a new coat. In the end, she was sent a coat personally for her. In my classroom, I could use this book for a read-aloud to share with my students how many people may have needs that are not yet met. Something that is dangerous about this book is possible stereotyping such as the feathers to represent Indians. One thing that is confusing about this book is that it calls mud, "gumbo." Is this suppose to be a metaphor?
