This book is probably most appropriate for 5-8 grade students. It is about three sisters who go to California to stay with their mom for a few weeks. Their mom left them and does not seem to want them to even visit. She then sends for children to a summer camp that is sponsored by the Black Panthers. I could use this book in my classroom for a book club, where students do different literary jobs. A risk with this book is possibly showing a stereotype that African American families may not be stable, such as having a parent who leaves.
