did not like it

Update: The more I think about it, the more I realize I didn't enjoy anything about this book at all so it's more suited to be a 1 star.

---

This book was 600+ pages of slog to get through. I understand how people would consider the sequel to be an improvement since the main character shows more agency and certain tropes are reversed, but the development was very on-the-nose and came at the expense of turning other characters into cartoonish villains. The writing suffered a lot from telling and not showing, especially when it came to the dialogue, where it mostly consisted of the main character asking questions which would result in the other faeries answering via several pages of monologues in order to tell the exposition and characters’ background stories. This would be fine if I cared about anything in the book at all, but I don’t. People hyped this book up to be some trashy erotica, but there were only 2 sex scenes towards the end; otherwise, the book is just a very boring fantasy story.

Andrew I have one question: will we be lucky enough to get a full review?

Sesshomaru47 They say "mate" a lot. Yes I get it l. He's her chum, her bud, her current focus for Stockholm syndrome. I get it. They are together. So frigging possessive. Creepy really. I hated this book.

Mary the racoon The writting is kind of annoying. The same words and expressions are used again and again.

Sierra Fenwick I kinda feel bad buying u something u probably regret but at the same time I really wanted content of u talking negatively about this series because... it really is a big fat yikes. I personally find it kinda funny so I enjoy it in a way lol.

Bia Brito Make a rant review pleaseee!!!!!

Salma19 (And I Darken stan) Thank you for noticing how some characters did an inconsistent 180. What a weak writing technique. Will you read the third book? Just curious. :)

message 7: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Huang Cindy drop the rant review

message 8: by Eva (new) - rated it 1 star

Eva B. I can't wait for this review!! I agree, the character 'development' was poor and honestly it read like fanfic to me :/

message 9: by Zutto (new)

Zutto Waiting for the video.

Jasmine I personally loved this book, mainly because tropes were reversed (no traditional love triangle being the main one) and because I'm a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope 🤷‍♀️ But if you thought this one was a slug, dear lord Cindy, save yourself and do not read the third book.

message 11: by Xavier (new)

Xavier Reads Wow Cindy you finally read it 😍

message 12: by Anne (new)

Anne Reading a 600+ page mediocre YA novel... you're much stronger than I am

Amanda Sue Yeah I couldn’t even get through it. It was so boring and I was just done with Freyra or whatever her name is.

message 14: by Gianina (new) - added it

Gianina oh shit. Cindy finally drop the bomb on us. I cant believe you powered through 600+ pages of a book you didnt like. That takes dedication. I salute you. Now , I will wait patiently for a rant review on your channel

message 15: by Eli (new) - rated it 2 stars

Eli I felt the same way! Finally i found someone other than me who disliked this book.

message 16: by Lory (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lory are you gonna read acowar??

message 17: by Cameron (new)

Cameron F. Wait a second... this book was 600+ pages? No thank you. I read It last year, and that took me 3 weeks. I’m not taking a full week reading this. There are too many other SHORTER books I need to read. However, at some point I will have to read ACOTR to figure out my individual opinion. And I will. *sighs*

I’m done with my mini rant. Not meant to offend anyone that likes this book. Or meant to offend anyone in general for any reason.

grace's books ౨ৎ ZOINKS omg I did not have the same experience as you, but I totally understand where you are coming from 🥰

message 19: by Heather-Lin (new)

Heather-Lin And this particular one happens to be the one in the series that's most beloved by fans. Will you continue, or will you choose to protect yourself from such toxic banality?

message 20: by Martín (new)

Martín Erburu The only good thing about this is that it gave us an amazing YouTube video. I hope you're okay after this traumatic experience.

Andrew Fair enough. Your video review for this is absolute gold so, silver lining

message 22: by Mic (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mic the Bookdragon Kinda sad you didn't like because it's one of my favorites but I get why you didn't enjoy it and it was interesting to hear opposing opinions.

message 23: by NoRa (new)

NoRa How did you even get through a 600-page boring book!? HOW?!?! Did you read spoiler reviews?

-Ann- 😢 i thought you would embrace it for its brand and love it for its trash

message 25: by Meg (new)

Meg I just DNF'd this at around 25%. It was *awful*. I don't know how the hell you managed to get through it.

message 26: by Lurva (new) - added it

Lurva I can't even read the first book omg the writing was so awful every character is stupid

message 27: by Nicoletta (new)

Nicoletta Bruno TRASH ... I've read two pages, enough to say it's not for me

message 28: by Jane (new) - rated it 1 star

Jane Upshall It was utter garbage ! The worst writing that I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe the high praise for this series .

message 29: by Sam (new) - added it

Sam Parker 🚩🚩🚩red flags all around for this book

Elizabeth YES OMG! How many times did she say "hiss", "snarl", "prick", "bastard" and "whore"? UGH!

message 31: by Cordelia (new)

Cordelia You're so right .....Its too long,to much boring at times plus with all those long paragraphs that seem like essays about a characters past etc

Meridith Brankamp THANK YOU! Coundlt agree more. I’m on chapter 55 and considering a DNF…

Alaina Hebert exactly my thoughts 🙃

message 34: by Marina Mulligan (new)

Marina Mulligan I would love to see a count of how many times they mention throwing up in this book. Or anything related to her "stomach turning"...it fells like it's on every other page, and I'm only half way through the book

reader_books11 I’m not sure, I read the first book and it was ok, should I dnf ACOMAF? I’m literally only 8 pages in

message 36: by Erin (new) - rated it 1 star

Erin Ward I agree! I stopped 60% through I kept thinking it would get better but it just didn’t. It drags on and on. No need for this book to be over 600 pages long

message 37: by Tanya (new) - rated it 1 star

Tanya Erickson I never want to hear the word “winnow” again—- ugh—it irks me like the word “moist” lol

message 38: by Kim (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kim Teel I agree I didn't even make it half way thru this book. I guess because the main character is so unlikable. And the writing is so much of the same thing over and over. I am shocked that this is the series that everyone has gone crazy over.

Sarah I feel bad for everyone that has harsh words to say about this book. I enjoyed this story, it was beautifully written and an amazing cast of characters and storylines and worlds to escape through. But you can’t make everyone happy I guess

message 40: by Reader (new) - added it

Reader 100 pages to go feels like I’ve been reading this for months and nothing has happened

message 41: by Mona (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mona NAURRR DIE

audrey (draco's version, hiatus) i find it very hard to read negative reviews of my favorite books, but i feel like your review had a very good base and compared to some of the others i’ve read i completely understand why it might not be your thing get where you’re coming from.

emily!! I strongly disagree but brave of you for giving your honest opinion!!! I thought the book was super good though

Michelle Mazon I absolutely agree with this review and most of the other lower reviews. Not every writer is going to please every reader. Everyone’s reading experiences affect the books they like. While I like fantasy such as Neil Gaiman, this type of fantasy just didn’t catch my attention. I tried to hard to just see this story for its bare bones and even then I could not root for the main character. In fact there wasn’t any character I could root for. I can see why this would be appealing to some people just as Twilight and 50 Shades of Gray have a huuuuuge following. But I didn’t read those at all and there was a reason why, but all power to those that it inspired to read because that’s the win at the end of the day.

message 45: by A.L. (new) - rated it 3 stars

A.L. Tempel I started this book at the end of August this year……… as of tonight, I finally made it to the 89% mark…….. this has been the hardest book to get through…. And I’ve read roughly 15 books since then that have been worlds better .. I can’t wait to not have this in my “currently reading” thingy mcbobber…….
