The Giver by Lois Lowry Published in `1993
Appropriate for late elementary/early middle school aged students. This book is about the main character, Jonas who is a normal everyday kid about to turn 12 to be assigned his job. After the chief elder skips her he is instantly worried but he is then assigned the most important job of the society, the receiver. After he is given this job, he then goes and starts to learn how big of a responsibility it is. The book ends but there are more books in this series as it is apart of the quartet. I would recommend encouraging your students to read this book as it is a Newberry honor book and it has a lot of interesting ideas to discuss!
