it was ok

I expected a lot more from this book, having read that Arthur Schnitzler and his work were superfantabulous, in particular, his book that was later adapted for the screen as Eyes Wide Shut, which, to be fair, I haven't seen so I didn't really know if I liked it, either, prior to reading this.

I give it a meh. The protagonist was engaging and realistic, and the story had great movement toward obvious disaster that kept you thinking, "oh my god, don't do it" while coincidentally sharing in her delicious momentum.

Sounds good, right? Well, yes, except that the minute I finished the book I forgot I ever read it. It was...flimsy that way.

Lisa I like your review but I had a different opinion. I thought that Bertha's sorrows were rather haunting. I haven't seen Eyes Wide Shut but I can't really see how that film can be based on this book. It's a puzzle!

Chris Weigl the book is better in German than the English translation by far

message 3: by Richard (new) - added it

Richard Eyes Wide Shut isn't based on this book...but on Schnitzler's Dream Novel.
