Obergurgl / Hochgurgl

Ski resorts in Austria
Obergurl is one of the highest ski resorts in all of Europe and with its 6332 feet above sea level. The resort is considered to be one of Austria's most snow-sure. At the same time, the mountain is close to the city of Innsbruck, which makes it easy to get to and from the alpine village.

Obergurl is also connected to the neighbouring mountain Hochgurgl, which with its 7053,8 feet altitude offers glacier skiing all year round.

Even though Obergurl is now recognized for its skiing, it is still a historical event that makes most people think of when they hear the village's name. It was here that a Swiss pilot named Auguste Piccard took his hot air balloon into the stratosphere to a record altitude of almost 16,0 feet.

The village is small but very traditionally equipped with a typical alpine church from the 1800s as its heart. By modern standards, the lift system is limited with its 69,6 miles of piste and 25 lifts. On the other hand, it is a perfect destination for those who want to take the family on their first alpine trip.
