Paycom does bring value in certain areas. The system makes it relatively simple to pull payroll reports and access data when needed, which allows me to step in and assist our payroll administrator at any time. Reporting capabilities are helpful, even if not perfect, and provide visibility into important payroll statistics. Another major positive has been our current payroll specialist, who is highly responsive and knowledgeable—an important improvement after previously experiencing turnover and unresponsiveness with other specialists. Despite its positives, Paycom has several significant limitations. The sales process set unrealistic expectations, promising features that ultimately did not exist. Implementation was rushed, with incomplete or incorrect setup that payroll specialists later had to fix. Reporting, while available, is not as comprehensive as needed. Many reports lack key fields, requiring frequent tweaks from our specialist, and development requests rarely progress.
Functionally, Paycom is not a complete payroll and HR solution. We still rely on our old payroll system for certain functions Paycom cannot handle, which forces us to operate in two systems to ensure documentation and compliance. Several HR-related areas are particularly weak: tracking continuing education is cumbersome, document access control is limited, employee performance evaluations are not well supported, and in-house training and CEU tracking are difficult to manage. Perhaps most concerning, Paycom cannot accommodate workers’ compensation—an essential part of HR—leaving a large gap in capability.
In addition, the system’s design is clunky and unintuitive. Navigation requires moving through multiple areas to find tools, and it is often unclear what impact a selection will have without specialist assistance.
