This episode is easily my favourite from the new first season. It manages to create a classic opposite main character trope while keeping it fresh and funny. I love how the boss is used in this episode and I feel like he should definitely be used more in later seasons.
- I saw this show, Smiling Friends a few times on Adult Swim, back in 2019-2020 and I straight up loved this show right away!!! I'm all about dark humor myself and this show is spot on!! If you're into dark humor or maybe you just like the crazy, odd, fun stuff, this show is for you.
- I can't stop watching it. Smiling Friends is freakin' hilarious and at the same time it's dark and freaky ((in a good way)) humor really does make me smile and laugh. I, 100% LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
- I really hope there's some Smiling Friends merchandise on the way!! I NEED IT!!
- I give Smiling Friends - 10 stars out of 10 stars!!!
It doesn't outdo the others in a specific way, it's just top 3 in every category. Fun concept, well executed and Grimm and Gnarly are great. Also boss had his time to shine and for the first time, every character had a role to play. Alan hasn't even had a plot yet so I hope in future episodes side characters get more roles.
"Frowning Friends" is peak Smiling Friends - chaotic, hilarious, and oddly profound. In just eleven-ish minutes, this episode effortlessly skewers the self-help industry, corporate competition, and nihilism, while keeping the absurd comedy at full throttle.
The introduction of Grim and Gnarly, the Frowning Friends, is genius. They're dark reflections of the Smiling Friends - deadpan, aggressive, and disturbingly relatable. Their "anti-mission" to spread sadness across the community escalates in truly unpredictable ways, building to a climax that's both outrageous and, weirdly, satisfying.
What makes this episode stand out isn't just the rapid-fire jokes and bizarre visuals (though they're phenomenal). It's the razor-sharp writing and clever commentary on how cynicism can disguise itself as truth - and how hope, even when naive, still matters.
From Mr. Boss's unhinged descent into jealousy to 3D Squelton's tragicomic monologue, everything here is packed with the unique flavor that makes Smiling Friends so unforgettable. And just when you think you know where it's going...well, you don't.
This is the show at its most confident and creative. Watch it twice - once to laugh, and again to catch the layers.
