Deedar

Deedar review :

Deedar will always be remembered as the first film signed by Akshay Kumar but Saugandh (1991) released earlier. Incidentally, veteran producer director Pramod Chakraborty met Akshay in Bangkok and decided to give him his big Bollywood break. Deedar wasnt Chakraborty's best work and it didnt succeed at the box office but Bollywood got its future superstar in Akshay Kumar. Akshay and Chakraborty teamed up again in 1998 for Barood which also turned out to be an average fare at the ticket counters.

Coming to Deedar, the plot and execution was like '70s romantic dramas where the hero falls in love with the heroine at first sight, then pursues her relentlessly till she gives in...and then a family feud emerges to play a villain in their love story. The helicopter song picturised on Kumar reminded viewers of Shammi Kapoor's "Aasman se aaya farishta" from An Evening in Paris (1967). Anand Milind's compositions were the film's only positive factor which gave it some footfalls in the theatres.

If we go by the gossip mags, Karisma Kapoor was regretful after signing the film as she felt Akshay Kumar was a B grade actor. Her mother Babita was responsible for influencing her thoughts and Deedar got delayed to some extent due to this issue. Later, when Akshay Kumar became a big star, the same Babita encouraged both Karisma and her younger sis Kareena to work with him. That's Bollywood!!
