When my late husband, Stanley Kramer, created his own independent film production company in 1947, his goal was to make some level of difference with his work in Hollywood.
The first success of that stated direction was the World War II drama “Home of the Brave” in 1949, adapted from Arthur Laurents’ play about anti-Semitism in the military. Radically, Stanley saw an opportunity with the material to shift his lens to building racial tensions in the United States, and so, in secret, he cast an African American (James Edwards) in the leading role and translated Laurents’ story about the Jewish GI experience to one about the Black GI experience. It would become the most-picketed film in history. It would also mark the start of one of our industry’s most consequential filmmaking careers.

“Nickel Boys” writer/director RaMell Ross has already been toasted as a filmmaker to watch this awards season for his acclaimed adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
Now, ahead of the film’s premiere, a new trailer is giving more details about the elusive plotline that plays with perspective.
The official synopsis reads: “Elwood Curtis’ college dream shatters alongside a two-lane Florida highway. Bearing the brunt of an innocent misstep, he’s sentenced to the netherworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory sunk deep in the Jim Crow South. He encounters another ward, the seen-it-all Turner. The two Black teens strike up an alliance: Turner dispensing fundamental tips for survival, Elwood, clinging to his optimistic worldview. Backdropped by the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, Elwood and Turner’s existence appear worlds away from Rev. Martin Luther King’s burnished oratory. A leaf twirls through a pair of Black fingers. A deck of playing cards is bridged together in extreme close-up. A dry-cleaned suit hangs out the window of a parked car like it’s waiting for its body to come back. A boy named Elwood studies his reflection in his grandmother’s steaming iron, and later in the window display of the local Tallahassee electronic shop whose TVs are broadcasting a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. The year is 1962, Jim Crow laws are still in full effect across the South, and young Elwood Curtis (Ethan Herisse) can’t help but see himself in the world around him — he can’t help but think he can change it.

In the late summers of 2022 and 2023, Cinema Foundation (a division of the National Association of Theater Owners) celebrated “National Cinema Day.” A promotion designed to goose movie attendance post-Covid,most theaters showed all films for $3 (2022) or $4 (2023). After skipping 2024, a version of it will return in 2025 — with some significant changes.
Gone is the promise of deeply discounted tickets. Instead, Cinema Foundation announced four discrete dates for “@ The Movies” that appear to target specific audience sectors. January 19, the Sunday of Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, the offer is “National Popcorn Day” with discount concessions. “Sneak Peek Saturday” on April 19, about two weeks after CinemaCon, will debut footage and trailers from highly anticipated upcoming movies shared at the convention.
There’s also “Date Night” August 15 and “Family Day” November 9, but Cinema Foundation offered no further details around those events.

Former Scream Queens star Keke Palmer has accused showrunner Ryan Murphy of bullying.
“It was kind of like I was in the dean’s office,” Palmer, 31, said of the incident in her new book, Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative.
The actress commented on her interactions with Murphy, 59, after a mishap led her to miss work. Palmer was originally off on the day she missed work, but production later changed the schedule, and she had chosen to honor a prior commitment rather than change her plans for the new shoot date.
“He was like, ‘I’ve never seen you behave like this,” Palmer said. “I can’t believe that you, out of all people, would do something like this.”

“The best antidote for a bad election is a good movie,” Richard M. Nixon once proclaimed, and for many filmgoers this week Conclave helped blot out the political noise. A papal thriller with a shock ending, Conclave’s impact again raises the question of whether serious adult fare can again command a strong market niche.
The setting of Conclave is itself a departure: The Pope is dead. The Vatican’s prayerfully powerful College of Cardinals is locked in its sanctorum, weathering intrigues about a potential new leader.
Directed by Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front), a regally robed cardinal, Ralph Fiennes, struggles to sustain calm in the face of sexual and political challenges raised by Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow, among others.

“It’s happening,” goes a lyric sung over the opening titles of Piece By Piece. “Yes... It’s real.” Just to be sure, here is confirmation, early doors: yep, this is a real film. We’ve had Lego Movies about Batman, Ninjas, Scooby-Doo. But a music documentary Lego Movie? Made with the full participation of self-described “hybrid thinker” Pharrell Williams, Piece By Piece is a surprisingly sincere and serious film about a sincere and serious artist, some distance from the irony-led Lord & Miller Lego entries. It’s quite a handbrake turn for Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom), but it largely follows the standard talking-heads doc template very faithfully. Just in Lego.

Television legend Dick Van Dyke endorsed Kamala Harris for president by reading a speech he delivered at a 1964 civil rights event alongside Martin Luther King.
In a video titled “Vote!! @KamalaHarris,” posted Monday, the 98-year-old star of “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Mary Poppins” and “Bye Bye Birdie” recalled reading the remarks, written by “Twilight Zone” creator Rod Serling, to “some 60,000 people in the Coliseum in L.A.”
“Hatred is not the norm. Prejudice is not the norm. Suspicion, dislike, jealousy, scapegoating, none of those are the transcendent facet of the human personality. They’re diseases. They are. They cancers of the soul,” Van Dyke read, in part.
He went on, “There will be moments of violence and expressions of hatred and [an] ugly echo of intolerance, but these are the clinging vestiges of a decayed past, not the harbingers of the better, cleaner future. To those who tell us the...

Mark Robinson, the North Carolina Republican whose extensive history of bigotry was shocking even for a Donald Trump-endorsed politician, lost his gubernatorial race to Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein on Tuesday.
Stein led Robinson by nearly 30 points as early results came in on Tuesday, enough for Fox News, NBC News, and others to call the race for the Democrat.
Robinson’s track record of offensive, racist remarks defined his campaign. He’s attacked Jews, Muslims, the LGBTQ community, called abortion “genocide” and survivors of the Parkland school shooting “spoiled.

Mahershala Ali’s Long Lost Film Debut Will Finally Be Released Almost 25 Years Later — Watch Trailer
Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali’s film debut is finally getting released almost 25 years after being shelved.
Ali plays a fictional, egotistical revolutionary leader who compares himself to Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Moses in “Taste the Revolution,” a political satire mockumentary written and directed by Dan Klein.
The long lost film follows two aspiring filmmakers as they chronicle the story of a charismatic revolutionary, Mac Laslow (Ali), and the group of disillusioned college students drawn together one summer to change the world. But, per the official synopsis, “without a unifying direction or clear goals, the movement descends into chaos.”
Alexander Bilu, Jeremy Dubin, Jen Nails, and Jeremy Beiler co-star alongside Ali, who also executive produces.
Ali isn’t the only Hollywood star who got his start with “Revolution”: Colin Trevorrow co-wrote the script, co-stars, and also executive produces.
So why was “Revolution” shelved back in 2001? Well, according to director Klein,...

Mahershala Ali’s first starring film role is finally making its way to the public after being in limbo for nearly 25 years.
Ali plays a revolutionary leader in writer-director Dan Klein’s mockumentary feature Taste the Revolution, with rights currently available for the film. Colin Trevorrow serves as executive producer and plays a small role in the project that is set to premiere at the New Orleans Film Festival on Oct. 19.
Taste the Revolution wrapped filming in 2001 but was shelved following the events of 9/11, with the footage recently being unearthed and edited into the movie that it was intended to become. The story centers on two filmmakers rolling cameras as revolutionary Mac Laslow (Ali) heads up a World Summit that draws an array of young adults looking to change the world and also blow off some steam.

For the mutants in the Marvel Universe, the “X” once represented hope and unity. Two lines, crossing together. Inspired by the dream of Charles Xavier of mutantkind and mankind coexisting, the X-Men reinforced this, incorporating the letter into their name as if to say “We will protect the futures of man and mutant alike, no compromise.”
It was a hopeful dream, born of good and evil ideas that represented parallels to our world, such as the fight for civil rights. This was no more apparent than how Xavier and rival Magneto compared to real-life civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X.
But this is a different time. This is a different era.

Green Lantern has had a rough history on film. In 2011, Warner Bros. bet on the hero being their Iron Man; a B-lister underdog who could kick off a blockbuster franchise. "Green Lantern" starring Ryan Reynolds did not fly high so the character was almost completely absent from the DC Extended Universe. (None of the major Green Lanterns show up in either cut of "Justice League.")
Now, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios is again looking to make the Green Lantern Corps an early fixture of their DC Films. Nathan Fillion is playing Guy Gardner in 2025's "Superman" and a "Lanterns" TV series is currently in development at HBO. A "True Detective" style murder mystery, "Lanterns" will star the two most famous comic Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart (not the one from "The Daily Show").

Curzon has debuted a new trailer for ‘Nickel Boys,’ based on the book by Colson Whitehead chronicling the powerful friendship between two young Black teenagers navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida.
Elwood Curtis’s college dream shatters alongside a two-lane Florida highway. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood strives to hold onto his humanity, awakening a new vision for Turner.
Directed by RaMell Ross, the cast includes Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson,...

“On the day of her graduation, Liza and her parents are driving to a restaurant to celebrate when a truck slams into their car. Eighteen months after the car accident, Liza is unable to walk and lives alone after her parents’ death. Feeling responsible, Liza spends her days trolling vloggers on a local website. Late one night, a new video is uploaded in which a man sets fire to a dog. She reports it to the police, but the police detective, Boyle, cannot be bothered with a misdemeanor.

“We must believe in our souls that we are somebody, that we are significant, that we are worthful, and we must walk the streets of life every day with this sense of dignity and this sense of somebody-ness.” These are words from the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and they serve as an inspirational catalyst for Colson Whitehead’s 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Nickel Boys.”
The book, which followed Whitehead’s critically acclaimed “The Underground Railroad,” shadows the gut-wrenching tale of two Black boys, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), negotiating their hard-time served in a severe reform school, Nickel Academy, and attempting to claim, protect and nurture their own humanity in a world that isn’t always kind or welcoming to people of color, particularly Black men.

How is the Republican Party not being held accountable for Mark Robinson, the party’s nominee for governor of North Carolina?
While there are plenty of Maga partisans in the modern GOP, Robinson stands apart from the rest. As we reported in Rolling Stone five months ago, Robinson’s conspiratorial, racist, homophobic, antisemitic, and frankly batshit statements aren’t merely extreme: They are uniquely shocking, offensive, vulgar, and prejudiced — even by Maga standards — and should be beyond the pale of political discourse.
And yet, I’m sure most Americans don’t even know his name.

Discussions are rampant about the new X-Men actors in the MCU. Fans have some suggestions about the cast of the mutant movie. For the role of Charles Xavier, a section of fans suggested a Black actor to play the role. This was partly based on the idea that Martin Luther King Jr. served as an inspiration to shape the character.

However, fans arguing for a comic-accurate Professor X presented their side and one particular argument appeared to rightly justify casting a White actor. Interestingly, the dynamic between a racially superior Charles Xavier and a Jewish Magneto will become important in the storyline of the film.

[This story includes spoilers from Lady in the Lake‘s seventh and final episode, “My Story.”]
For the first 100 days of filming Lady in the Lake, actress Moses Ingram was nowhere to be found. In fact, she was the last person booked for the Apple TV+ limited series starring Natalie Portman as a Jewish tradwife-turned-reporter searching for her next byline in 1960s Baltimore. But the thing is: Ingram’s riveting portrayal of a missing Black woman who is believed to have been found dead in the show’s titular body of water has become the prestige drama’s breakout story.
In Lady in the Lake, which premiered July 19, Ingram plays Cleo Johnson, the protagonist and narrator guiding audiences through the mysterious muck that leads to her death. For the last seven episodes, Ingram masterfully shapeshifts between two worlds in racially divided Baltimore. From twirling in petticoats and feathered gowns as a department store window model...

William Shatner became a legend for playing the role of Captain James T. Kirk in the show Star Trek. The actor played the role in all three seasons of the original series and even returned for the seven films with the Og cast. He also made an appearance on Star Trek: Generations, which passed the torch to the spinoff show The Next Generation.
While the film received mixed responses, one aspect of the film tested so badly with the audience that Paramount reportedly decided to change the scene. The scene involved the death of Shatner’s Captain Kirk. The veteran actor still seemed to be disappointed with it, but did not want another do-over.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus opened a panel featuring eight women Democratic governors Wednesday with a few quips about Donald Trump and Jd Vance, while saying she was among those filled with “new hope and joy” over the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz ticket.
The event in downtown Chicago was for the Democratic Governors Association and the DGA’s Women Governors Fund and came at the event on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention.
“This is so cool,” Louis-Dreyfus said at the outset. “We are very honored to have eight highly intelligent, highly capable women leaders for the 21st century with us — or what Jd Vance might call a coven of semi menstruating witches.”
The panel included Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Maine Gov. Janet Mills, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healy and Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly.
Louis-Dreyfus called the Harris-Walz campaign “contagious.

The sky above Chicago is bright and blue as Democrats gather this week to pitch their vision for America on live TV over the next four nights.
But no matter how high the hopes of the faithful, there are clouds hanging over this particular Democratic National Convention that have been there for more than 50 years. Ghosts from the last time the Democrats convened for a DNC in Chicago were evident Sunday as delegates and other attendees arrived in the Windy City.
The events in and around the 1968 DNC in Chicago have endured as a landmark moment of political chaos and social change for America. Inside the convention hall, Democrats struggled mightily to coalesce around a consensus nominee after the upheaval of President Lyndon B. Donald Trump is making false claims in a bizarre new press conference.
The 78-year-old former President of the United States shocked viewers with a press conference on Thursday (August 8), during which he repeatedly lied and said that “nobody was killed” during the deadly January 6 insurrection led by his supporters at the Capitol in 2021.

During his iconic career at CBS News, Dan Rather was on the ground in Dallas moments after President Kennedy is assassinated; covered the Civil Rights moment and the Vietnam War; and was the only anchor in China’s Tiananmen Square before the crackdown on protesters. He also famously was roughed up during the 1968 Democratic National Convention — which inspired Variety to ask Rather, still going strong at 92 (you can read his current “Steady” columns at steady.substack.com), to reflect on that tumultuous moment in U.S. politics and how it compares to what has happened in 2024.
One of the hallmarks of a good broadcast journalist is the ability to roll with the proverbial punches during live events. You have to be a good ad-libber and be able to pivot, ready for the unexpected. Suffice it to say that on March 31, 1968, I was not ready when President Lyndon Johnson delivered a shocker.

For years, Donald Trump has been obsessed with the size of campaign-rally crowds, viewing it as a prime indicator of his political dominance. He cared so much about it that he had his own White House shamelessly lie about his inauguration attendance, in order to make him feel better.

It’s not a matter of being mean or spiteful. It’s a matter of necessity! When you have wicked people doing wicked things, torturing and murdering and raping. It’s time to call out,...

While it was hard not to find an Eddie Murphy film in theaters during the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s, the multi-faceted talent has been more reserved in taking on roles over the last decade. Though he’ll soon be gracing television screens as classic character Axel Foley in Netflix’s upcoming “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” he’s not sure how many more movies he has left in him, but there is one project he’s been waiting for the right moment to take on.
“This one thing I’ve been threatening to do for years called ‘Soul, Soul, Soul,’ Murphy said in a recent interview with The New York Times. “It’s like this fake documentary that I love.”
Murphy described it as “a ‘Zelig’ kind of thing,” referring to the 1983 Woody Allen mockumentary about a fake figure of the 1920s whose desire to fit in caused him to...

“Comedy is what takes us away from all the pain and all the hurt and all the turmoil that goes on in life. It takes us away from that, even if only for a brief second, a brief moment.” Maybe you wouldn’t expect this level of depth from a man who’s made a career of being silly. Something else you might not expect? Even 30 years into his comedy career, he was still possessed by a nervous energy before getting on the stage for his 2016 special. So much of what has made Martin Lawrence successful is his ability to channel that nervous energy into something great and, more importantly, something funny.
But what drives that energy? For Martin, it may be the very pain, hurt, and turmoil he’s trying to help us escape. Despite his success, Martin’s life has been marked by challenges, from a difficult childhood to high-profile controversies.
