Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.

Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling “Poor Things” – Willem Dafoe

Weekly Commentary: Another deathmatch between two movies — Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi comedy “Poor Things.”

“Maestro” won big at the Makeup and Hair guild while “Poor Things” took home the BAFTA prize.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.

The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.

Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).

This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).

Fifty years ago, we spent 73 days on a majestic mountain, miles away from the warmth and stability of society as we know it, alone but for the presence of God and each other. But it would be those two elements that would keep us and the other 14 survivors of a horrific plane crash and subsequent avalanche alive as we prayed for the strength to survive just one more minute. Those minutes became hours, those hours became days, and those days became weeks as we held onto the flickering hope within our own society that salvation lay on the horizon.

We and others have been telling our story for half a century, but the filmmaker J.A. Bayona has captured it in ways that we find inspiring and fresh all over again. In many respects, “Society of the Snow” violates a well-worn tenet of all drama: it is a film free of an antagonist.

Some categories go together naturally, like Best Picture and Best Director. It’s no different in the below-the-line categories, either, with Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling having an interesting relationship with one another.

The three design awards are often paired or grouped together as a trio and awarded to the same film. Most recently, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Let’s take a closer look at this trifecta of categories and examine the last 20 ceremonies to break down how often these awards overlap.

As you can see, in the past two decades, there have been 11 instances where a film has won at least two of these three design categories.

Eight films have won both Costume Design and Production Design: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004, “The Aviator” in 2005, “Memoirs of a Geisha...

“Society of the Snow,” J. A. Bayona’s survival thriller about the real-life 1972 plane crash in the Andes with the Uruguayan rugby team, required painstaking SFX makeup for corpses, wounds, and severe physical deterioration. For prosthetic makeup artists David Martí and Montse Ribé, it was a far cry from their Oscar-winning creature work on Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” 17 years ago. That was fantastical; this was based on reality. It was complicated, grueling, and performed under the most difficult conditions, including the cramped fuselage interior set and on location in the snowy mountains of Sierra Nevada, Spain.

Yet Netflix’s Spanish international Oscar nominee was much gorier until Bayona cut the most gruesome shots from the final edit (including severed heads and eating flesh from corpses) after realizing that it was too unsettling. “We worked like crazy doing the dummy [corpses] all around with ounces and ounces of silicone,” Ribé told IndieWire.

Spanish cinema was celebrated at the 38th Annual Goya Awards in Valladolid, with Netflix’s The Society of the Snow taking a total of 12 trophies, the most of the night.

J.A. Bayona won in the Best Director category for The Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve), with the film also taking Best Film.

The top acting awards went to Malena Alterio for Antonio Méndez Esparza’s Que Nadie Duerma (Something Is About to Happen) and to David Verdaguer for David Trueba’s Saben aquell (Jokes & Cigarettes).

Sigourney Weaver was honored with an International Goya during the ceremony with Juan Mariné receiving an honorary Goya.

This year’s nominations event was emceed by actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid and aired live (beginning at 8:30 a.m. Et/5:30 a.m. Pt) on ABC during “Good Morning America” while simultaneously streaming globally on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, and the academy’s Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook accounts.

Justine Triet’s acclaimed French courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall has won best film at the 2023 European Film Awards, held Saturday evening, Dec. 9 in Berlin.

Sandra Hüller, a double nominee in the best actress category, won for her barnstorming turn in Anatomy of a Fall as a writer who may have killed her husband.

Accepting her prize, Hüller, speaking to the various conflicts raging in and around Europe at the moment, called for a moment of silence from the audience to “silently, strongly, vividly, imagine peace.”

Justine Triet took the best directing honor for Anatomy and shared the best screenplay honor with Arthur Harari for their joint script to the twisty murder mystery. A couple in real life, Triet and Harari said writing the script, which is a piercing dissection of a marriage in crisis, “put our relationship to the test but thankfully we survived.”

Nikolaj Arcel’s The Promised Land and J. A. Bayona’s Society Of The Snow have both won two craft prizes each at the European Film Awards.

They are among eight winners of the Excellence Awards for the arts and craft of filmmaking which will be presented at the European Film Awards on December 9 in Berlin.

For The Promised Land, Rasmus Videbæk won the prize for European Cinematography and Kicki Ilander for European Costume Design.

The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito) and the other nominations for the 2012 Goya Awards (Premios Goyas) have been announced. The 26th Annual Goya Awards (Premios Goyas), presented by the Academia de las Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences), is “Spain’s main national film awards, considered by many in Spain, and internationally, to be the Spanish equivalent of the American Academy Awards.” The awards will be handed out on February 19, 2012 in Madrid, Spain.
