Few ideas survive the times that spawned them, but Westworld, the 1973 Michael Crichton movie about an Old West amusement park populated by lifelike robots, is good enough that Hollywood's been coming back to it for more than 40 years. The original film, which was MGM's biggest box-office success of the year, spawned a sequel and a short-lived TV series; talk of a remake had been floated around for years, with everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Quentin Tarantino being namedropped around the project at various points. (There was even a porn version,...

The stylistics of documentary filmmaking helped wipe out the old Hollywood way of doing things, and this sharp look at Olympic skiing is a prime example. Michael Ritchie became a director to be watched filming a killer competitor (Robert Redford), a blaze on the ski slopes and an Sob in every other aspect of his life. The style still looks fresh, 36 years later. Young Robert Redford and politics: 'The Candidate' and 'All the President's Men' (photo: Robert Redford as Bob Woodward in 'All the President's Men') A young Robert Redford can be seen The Candidate, All the President's Men, Three Days of the Condor, and Downhill Racer as Turner Classic Movies' Redford series comes to a close this evening. The world of politics is the focus of the first three films, each one of them well-regarded box-office hits. The last title, which shows that politics is part of life no matter what, is set in the world of competitive sports. 'The Candidate' In the Michael Ritichie-directed The Candidate (1972), Robert Redford plays idealistic liberal Democrat Bob McKay, who, with no chance of winning, is convinced to run against the Republican incumbent in a fight for a California seat in Congress. See, McKay is too handsome. Too young. Too liberal.

New Zealand agency Colenso Bbdo has created a new campaign for human rights group Amnesty International to back its ‘protect the human’ positioning.
The campaign aims to show kiwis what it’s like to live without basic human rights and centres on a Facebook app that scans a user’s timeline for comments and behaviour that would be condemned in different countries.
It also includes punishments that might result, including lashing, torture, beating and death.
Beheaded for speaking out against the government in Syria
Rebecca Emery deputy director for Amnesty International’s said: “These are issues that Amnesty International deals with everyday and are a reality for so many people around the world. Trial by Timeline is a fantastic opportunity for us to bring a greater understanding of human rights issues to New Zealanders in an accessible and creative way.”

If you’ve seen a performance at Lincoln Center in the past 25 years—and shame on New Yorkers who haven’t—then you’ve probably taken home a Playbill with a cover by artist James McMullan. McMullan’s theater posters are striking in color, his figures rendered in mid-movement. The characters’ gestures, the use of shadow, and even the lettering of the play’s title all combine under McMullan’s paintbrush to capture the underlying themes of the play. On the 2008 poster for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, McMullan spotlighted the racial prejudices that the musical is famous for confronting: the sailors are shirtless, smiling, and brawny, but beneath them are the natives, almost blending in with the landscape. The female lead, Nellie Forbush, dances into the center of the scene in a billowing white sailor suit.

At the age of 26, graphic novelist Dash Shaw has already delivered a genuine masterpiece. And not just any masterpiece: Bottomless Belly Button (EW's #5 book of 2008) is the kind of delicately observed, funny-sad multi-generational family saga that you expect from a maestro in the full flowering of their late-life artistic powers. Ingmar Bergman's Fanny & Alexander, say, or Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. Shaw's nimble skill for storytelling and characterization is more than matched by his eclectic drawing style, which is simultaneously cartoonish, realistic, and impressionistic. Every page, every panel of his work combines the composed photographic detail of an...
