One neat thing about the original "Frasier" series was that it had some major guest stars we never actually got to see. In fact, it had a ton of major guest stars we never got to see. Dr. Crane's Kacl talk radio show provided the perfect opportunity to land some of the greatest guests in TV history without having to worry about getting the celebrities into the studio — although Linda Hamilton actually doubled up as a caller and an in-person guest on "Frasier." Everyone from Christopher Reeve to Carrie Fisher called the good doctor for advice over the course of the show's 11 seasons, and it wasn't just actors.
"Frasier" also played host to the voices of musicians Eddie Van Halen and Art Garfunkel, as well as tennis star John McEnroe. While the show never struggled to get big-name actors in the flesh, these "hidden" cameos made for an undeniably cool...

A subject’s charm can take a documentary a long way. That’s the case in Matt Tyrnauer’s latest project, Nobu, a glowing portrait of Nobu Matsuhisa. The Japanese chef is best known for his empire of luxury sushi restaurants (and more recently, hotels), where guests can experience his medley of dishes inspired by his Japanese roots and early foray into Peruvian cuisine. In Nobu, based on Matsuhisa’s memoir of the same name, Tyrnauer (also in Telluride this year with Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid) anchors the global phenom’s name to a personality.
Nobu is a straightforward and admiring portrait of its subject. The film will likely appeal to fans of the chef (especially since this year marks the 30th anniversary of the first Nobu restaurant), but it may not completely satiate the culinary-curious. Less process-oriented and more wide-ranging than David Gelb’s glossy doc Jiro Dreams of Sushi,...

The Hotel Bel-Air is now fully in its post-Wolfgang Puck era.
First it brought on culinary director Joe Garcia, a French Laundry vet who drew acclaim at West L.A.’s tasting-menu temple Manzke, as well as noted French-born pastry chef Christophe Rull.
Now the pair, who’ve already been freshening the offerings at the property’s eponymous al fresco restaurant — look out for the composed tuna tartare — are turning their attention to two new concepts.
The Living Room, done up in the fewer-frills casual refinement currently favored by today’s understated billionaires, now offers an extravagant afternoon tea. The service, at $140 per person, includes an array of savory and sweet bites, as well as a glass of champagne.
But the main event is a hyper-seasonal dinner menu which, at the outset, consists of elegant renditions of decidedly middle-Americana classics like grilled cheese (with black truffle and shallot marmalade...

While it’s far too early to speculate on what movies will be nominated at next year’s Oscars (Dune: Part Two? Madame Web? A straight-to-streaming Sharknado sequel starring the Hawk Tuah girl?), the Academy has already been actively trying to lock down a host. Reportedly, Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney have been offered the gig, but both have turned it down.
This is especially disappointing news for Mulaney fans, who have been clamoring for him to host ever since he killed at the Academy’s Governors Awards and delighted the crowd at last year’s Oscars, when he presented the award for Achievement in Sound and reminded us all of the magic of the movies how downright goofy Field of Dreams really was.

“It’s all about high and low,” exclaimed Michael Kors. “It always has been. Isn’t that what fashion’s all about?”
Tucked into a leather-lined booth in an elegant dining room replete with ivory flowers, passed trays of rosé champagne, spicy tuna cones and caviar handed out by handsome tux-ed waiters, he peered out into the softly lit, glorious sea of ladies during cocktail hour — many boldface names — decked out in his classic slinky black and gold jersey numbers — and chuckled: “Nobody would believe we’re in Canters!”
That’s right: Canter’s Deli on Fairfax, the old school almost hundred-year-old hangout for neighborhood regulars by day, and late-night post-club hipsters by night. Known for bagels, pastrami sandwiches, fat fries and Dr. Brown’s soda, not for being a celebrity hotspot.

Timed to coincide with TV’s upfronts in New York, a real estate-focused event that also calls itself the Upfronts — a luxury property reveal thrown by The Society Group — took over The Wallis in Beverly Hills on May 15. Held in the Bram Goldsmith Theater, the confab saw L.A.’s biggest power brokers gather to preview some of the world’s most luxurious listings coming to market.
“This is fun for me because usually I’m sitting in the audience where you’re sitting looking at a performance,” Carolwood’s Linda May noted, “so it’s really nice to look out and see so many friends here enjoying the theater.”
Despite a few technical Av hiccups, the Upfronts ran like clockwork, with exuberant presenters giving succinct pitches to an involved audience about new-to-market skyscraper penthouses in NYC, $100 million-plus mansions in L.A. and even Hollywood production studios. After his presentation, Fredrik Eklund even joked,...

On Hollywood’s biggest night, an exclusive viewing party in Beverly Hills brought together wall-to-wall reality television stars that gathered at Wolfgang Puck’s legendary restaurant Spago.
DirecTV Streaming With the Stars was an intimate affair for nearly 200 guests that was hosted by Rob Lowe. The event served plates of sautéed scallops and beet salads from the restaurant’s signature menu, along with specialty cocktails. And during a commercial break the DJ played “Happy Birthday” as staff wheeled out cakes and pies to celebrate Lowe turning 60 on March 17.
The host grinned with gratitude before turning his eyes to see the delivery of the Best Supporting Actor category on a screen in the middle of the lounge.
Watching his old friend Robert Downey Jr. take home the Oscar for “Oppenheimer” was a highlight of the evening for Lowe, who said he has known the Oscar winner since sharing a sophomore history class in Santa Monica.

It is crunch time for Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, and Molly McNearney, the three Executive Producers of the 96th Annual Academy Awards. As they are putting final touches in place for what they hope will be a show that honors not just this year’s crop of movies but also Hollywood’s and Oscar’s rich history, the trio are planning a ceremony that excites viewers to the point of keeping the recent post-pandemic ratings rise rising.
All indications are good that this could be a banner year, ratings wise, for the Oscars, particularly with the potency and popularity of this year’s Best Picture contenders, most notably the dual phenomenon of summer blockbusters Barbie and front-runner Oppenheimer (aka Barbenheimer) which have 21 nominations between them. As host Jimmy Kimmel told me earlier this week, viewers will have actually seen this year’s movies and have a rooting interest in the outcome.

Glad-handing is a competitive sport, one that’s all but impossible to win with both paws buried in a seafood tower. Such is the eternal conundrum of the awards season party circuit. These are celebrations, sure, yet the pressure to network, posture and kiss any proverbial ring that may be offered so often undermines that most basic of human urges: to cobble together a meal from passed hors d’oeuvres — especially after enduring a three-hour screening or even longer awards show on an empty stomach. It shouldn’t be so hard! And, thankfully, it needn’t be. By keeping a few helpful tips in mind — and, when the moments arise, in hand — any industry party can be professionally productive and filling.
The Smaller the Bite, the Better Sunset Tower, a perennial venue choice for studios, platforms and brands, likes to shrink standards from its Tower Bar menu — eliminating surprises for familiar clientele.

In an idle moment, I kinda, sorta, half-thought that it might be fun to leave the pros behind and spend March 10, Academy Awards night, with some real fans at the annual “one-of-a-kind” viewing party at the Academy Museum.
So I did some window shopping on the museum web site. Wow.
Officially sponsored Oscar fun doesn’t come cheap. A single non-member ticket to the five-hour, black-tie optional affair goes for $250. For the arithmetically challenged, that’s $500 per couple, in exchange for which you get hors d’oeuvres and tacos, complimentary wine from European Oscar sponsors Clarendelle and Domaine Clarence Dillon (many of whose bottles are modestly priced), access to the museum galleries and store, and a shot at unreserved seating wherever.
For another $200, or $400 per couple — that’s 900 bucks in all — they’ll throw in dinner, free beer and cocktails, plus reserved seats in the Tea Room.

David Beckwith, the veteran publicist whose crowning achievement was his work representing Elvis Presley’s Graceland museum since it opened more than four decades ago, has died. He was 67.
Beckwith died Friday in Phoenix after his hip replacement surgery was followed by sepsis, fellow publicist Lynn Weiss announced.
Beckwith for many years also represented Wolfgang Puck, his annual Governors Ball dinner at the Academy Awards and Spago. With the chef and agent Swifty Lazar, he arranged a fine dinner at Spago for industry heavyweights who were not at the Oscars, complete with a large-screen TV for them to watch the show.
When Presley’s home in Memphis, Tennessee, was first opened to the public in July 1982, Beckwith helped manage the 700-plus members of the media there for the opening news conference with Priscilla Presley. He continued his work with Graceland and Elvis Presley Enterprises until his death.

Wolfgang Puck’s now-iconic Chinois on Main, which pioneered what came to be known as Asian fusion or Pacific Rim cuisine, has turned 40 this year. An entertainment industry haven since the day it opened in Santa Monica at the address of a former New Wave punk club, it’s since gone from radical to old guard. The restaurant’s starry clientele has ranged from Tom Selleck and Mike Ovitz to Gwyneth Paltrow and Frank Gehry (who is now designing Puck’s planned replacement of the oceanfront Gladstone’s restaurant along Pch).

Tracy Morgan paid tribute to his longtime business manager Mark Landesman on Wednesday, admitting, “I don’t know where I’d be without you, bro.”
Landesman was recognized with THR‘s Business Manager Icon Award at its annual Power Business Managers breakfast, where Morgan, his client of 20 years, presented him with the honor.
At the podium, Morgan joked, “Whenever I want to buy a new Ferrari, Mark is always here to say, ‘No, Tracy.’ If it wasn’t for Mark, I would’ve had 26 Ferraris and a terrible tax problem.” He also teased he’s previously asked if he could buy the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building and the Staten Island Ferry — the last of which he was told, “No Tracy, my other client Pete Davidson already owns it.”

Facing tight budgets and continued uncertainty in the entertainment sector, buyers at this year’s MipJunior are expected to largely stick to tried and true IP, but many still see opportunities for exciting original content.
In addition to presenting the hottest new kids’ shows from around the globe, MipJunior, which runs Oct. 13-15, will examine the latest developments and trends that are redefining the market, such as the state of co-production and financing amid audience fragmentation, consumer use of multi-platform media, the growing role of gaming and the emergence of disruptive technologies like AI.
“Given the current uncertainties in the sector around streamers and broadcasters, we see less appetite for risk and thus more interest in established brands and IP with built-in audiences,” says Bernd Wendeln, COO of Munich-based Your Family Entertainment (Yfe).

Editor’s note: This report has been updated with more information from Los Angeles County officials.
After a half-century, the landmark Gladstone’s restaurant in Pacific Palisades apparently is ending its run.
The oceanside restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway is expected to close in October, a source told Deadline. The State of California owns the land and leases it long-term to Los Angeles County, which has entered into contractual agreements with Pch Beach Associates LLC. That group was selected in 2018 after a request for proposal went out. That deal calls for the construction of a Frank Gehry-designed, Wolfgang Puck-operated restaurant on the current Gladstones site, the County rep said. That vote was not unanimous, however.
Update: As the Pacific Palisades location dies, another rises to take its place. A new Gladstone’s will take possession of the Edgewater Grill space in downtown San Diego’s Seaport Village early...

Over at Disney+, nearly everything developed under former CEO Bob Chapek is out, including dozens of movies and TV shows that are being pulled from the streamer.
“Willow,” “The World According to Jeff Goldblum” and “The Mysterious Benedict Society.” Also, say goodbye to Disney+ Originals movies, including “The Princess” with Joey King and “The One and Only Ivan” with Bryan Cranston, as well as “Wolfgang,” a documentary about celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck.
And even content that debuted earlier this year, such as “Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever,” will be gone soon.
At press time, Disney had not yet decided whether to yank “Howard,” a doc about the Oscar-winning lyricist behind ’90s classics “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Little Mermaid.”
Here’s what’s being pulled from the service on May 26.

Two days into the Writers Guild of America’s first strike in 15 years, union leadership gathered members for a “rowdy” and “raucous” meeting at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium on Wednesday night.
The venue, which previously was home to such events as the Academy Awards and Grammys, drew more than 1,800 WGA members who gathered to hear from leaders about what led to the breakdown in negotiations between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers — and ended up becoming something of an inter-union solidarity rally, with representatives from six different entertainment unions in attendance. (The Shrine has a capacity of 6,300.)
“I’ve been around 25 years and have never seen all the unions this united or on the same page,” one showrunner who was in attendance told THR after hearing leaders from each of the guilds speak. “They are all getting variously screwed by these companies and they...

Each MasterChef judge brings something unique to the television show. They provide expert-level critiques and personalities, while acting as the face of the series. The U.S. iteration started with Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, and Joe Bastianich, but there was only one permanent female judge on MasterChef in Christina Tosi. The most recent panel includes Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez, and Bastianich. Here’s a list of four excellent chefs that would make great judges on the show.

This year, instead of hiring a movie industry stalwart like recent Oscar show producers Steven Soderbergh or Will Packer — who separately oversaw Academy Awards broadcasts over the past couple of years that were, shall we say, memorable for all the wrong reasons — the Academy has turned to awards show and live TV veterans Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner. In going for experience rather than take a chance on someone who is not known for putting together a massive television production for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year, AMPAS returned to the days of Gil Cates, who reliably produced 14 Oscar shows and could be counted on to try new things but also uphold tradition.

Rebecca Halpern’s latest documentary “Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie” examines iconic Chicago chef Charlie Trotter, who developed micro-greens and helped make vegetarianism mainstream. The chef, who died in 2013, was also known for his cookbooks, which featured groundbreaking food photography, which earned him the title “godfather of food porn.” Trotter’s first namesake restaurant, located in a Lincoln Park townhouse on Chicago’s North Side, opened its doors in 1987 and remained a famed establishment for 25 years. While considered a trailblazing chef whose restaurants helped transform American fine dining, Trotter was also known for his temper and controlling behavior.
“He was the puppeteer,” Grant Achatz, a chef who worked for Trotter and went on to open his own restaurants says in the film. “He figured out a way to get what he wanted from all of us.”

Groundbreaking Chicago chef Charlie Trotter didn’t invent abusive behavior, but his star cameo at the height of his culinary fame, in the 1997 Julia Roberts comedy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” certainly helped normalize it. In the scene — referenced twice in Rebecca Halpern’s documentary about him, “Love, Charlie” — the bespectacled Trotter, overseeing a frantic kitchen and hoping to please Roberts’ star restaurant critic, barks at a cook, “I will kill your whole family if you don’t get this right! I need this perfect!”
We don’t learn if he ad-libbed this line (that would have been a telling detail), but judging from the life story Halpern has to tell, it encapsulates what he was ultimately known for: drive, dedication to high standards and not always the best behavioral instincts. Trotter — who died in 2013, one year after he’d closed his legendary eponymous restaurant at the 25-year mark — proves more...

Kat Coiro, the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law director-producer and director of Universal’s Marry Me, wants to see Hollywood stop showing single-use plastics onscreen. No more plastic water bottles. No more Solo cups. No more plastic baggies.
To de-normalize the depiction of disposable plastic in film and TV and encourage viewers to use reusable containers — all in the name of helping end the plastic pollution crisis — Coiro showed Owen Wilson packing his daughter’s lunch in Marry Me in a steel lunch box, while Jennifer Lopez drank from a blinged-out S’well bottle in the romantic comedy. And on the Marvel/Disney+ series She-Hulk, the show’s characters, including the Hulk, played by actor and environmental activist Mark Ruffalo, drink from Hydro Flasks, not throw-away plastic water bottles.

Guy Fieri has recently become a thing on social media. If you haven’t perused through TikTok to see him vibing at a rock concert, you might have seen one of his mock movie posters on Instagram. In August, Fieri inserted an image of himself over Brad Pitt on a prank poster for “Burger Train”; and in September, he photoshopped himself into a poster for “Don’t Worry Diner”, with the tagline “Welcome to Flavortown” and a caption that’s a wink and a nod to star Harry Styles’ now-infamous quotable from the Venice press conference.
Despite his love for movies, Fieri is no entertainment expert. When asked to play a game of pop culture trivia at breakfast at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, Fieri is unaware of Elton John’s new single with Britney Spears, though he thinks it’s cool, and responds, “When do we get to talk about food?...

Tonight, the Top Five chefs are faced with two separate elimination challenges in the semifinals: a Baked Alaska and one of Chef Gordon Ramsay’s signature dishes, an intricate lobster tortellini. Then, the chefs who advance to the finals prepare an appetizer and entree in front of a live audience with the support of former “MasterChef” judge Graham Elliot in the special two-hour “Semi Finals/Finale Part 1 – Special Guest Graham Elliot” episode of “MasterChef” airing Wednesday, Sept. 7 (8:00-10:00 Pm Et/Pt) on Fox.

Three home cooks were sent packing in last week’s double episode of “MasterChef.” First, the duo of Amanda Saab and Derrick Fox succumbed to their inability to properly communicate during the wall challenge. Judges Gordon Ramsay, Aaron Sanchez and Joe Bastianich said their Crispy Skin Duck with Moroccan-Style Couscous, Romanesco and Blood Orange Gastrique tasted like cough syrup. Next, the Top 6 took over Spago for renowned Chef Wolfgang Puck. Willie Mike led his Blue Team to a loss and was eliminated for his poor effort.
In our recent poll, where we asked you to pick which chef-testant you think deserved to be eliminated, the majority agreed it was time for Willie (28) and Amanda (26) to go. But most people were upset to see Derrick leave. Instead, Shanika Patterson received the third most votes at 22. Dara Yu was next at 15 followed by Derrick at 5 and Michael Silverstein with 4.

A triple elimination took place on “MasterChef” last night when Episode 16 and Episode 17 of Season 12 aired back-to-back on Fox. The Top 8 were paired together and tasked with communicating on opposite sides of a wall to create identical dishes with a double elimination on the line. Judges Gordon Ramsay, Aaron Sanchez and Joe Bastianich sent Amanda Saab and Derrick Fox home for poor communication and a bad Crispy Skin Duck with Moroccan-Style Couscous, Romanesco and Blood Orange Gastrique.
Next, the Top 6 took over Chef Wolfgang Puck’s kitchen at the famous Spago restaurant in Los Angeles. Willie May failed to show the leadership qualities it takes to win and was asked to turn in his apron at the end of the night. Do you think Amanda, Derrick and Willie deserved to get the boot this week? Vote below in our poll.
Amanda, Derrick and Willie weren’t the only chefs in the hot seat on Wednesday.
