Who’s my audience? That’s one of the biggest questions any filmmaker can ask themselves, especially at this moment when it’s never been harder simply to reach an audience. Luckily, the heads of Kino, a bold startup interactive cinema, are set to join IndieWire at the Future of Filmmaking Summit in Los Angeles on November 2.

We’re introduced to Ben Grady, still reeling from the sudden death of his wife Sarah. Played by Grant Rosenmeyer, Ben sits numbly, having forgotten even basic needs in his grief.

Ben (Grant Rosenmeyer) is depressed. This is understandable. He used to be part of the team known as Sarah and Ben, famous for the Sarah and Ben books, but now there is no more Sarah and he seems to have no more purpose. What’s more, because she died of anaphylaxis, and has a sizeable insurance policy, there’s an ongoing police investigation in which he is a suspect, making it really hard for him to get any space. So he stays in bed, until his sister Gloria (Lucy DeVito) forces him out of it, still in his blanket, into a chair in the garden; and then he stays in his chair in the garden for three days. This, it is made clear to him, is not healthy. He needs to find something – anything – on which to focus so that he can reconnect with the world.
Of course, when he does.

Grant Rosenmeyer and Paul Raci in The Secret Art Of Human Flight
Filipino-American filmmaker, musician and artist Hp Mendoza's The Secret Art Of Human Flight, written by Jesse Orenshein, is a quirky tale about loss and grief. When Ben Grady (Grant Rosenmeyer), who is grieving the death of his wife, comes across a self-help book by the enigmatic guru 'Mealworm' (Paul Raci), who claims to have harnessed the power to fly, he orders a copy. The book arrives with a surprise - Mealworm himself. The intrusion of the guru, and the beginning of an unusual journey, set Ben on a path to potentially heal and maybe take flight.
Mendoza's latest film is an extension of the director's previous quirky, dramatic and comedic character-driven premises. He made his directorial feature début with the 2009 comedy musical Fruit Fly, about a Filipina performance artist who visits a commune in search of her biological mother,...

When we meet Ben Grady (Grant Rosenmeyer), he can barely lift himself out of the living room chair. By the end of this lo-fi indie drama, he’s soaring among the clouds like some kind of schlubby superhero — or one of those kids from “Chronicle” — having mastered what “The Secret Art of Human Flight” calls … well, you heard the title. Maybe not “mastered” exactly, but Ben’s finally getting the hang of it, and that’s exhilarating, since flying couldn’t be farther from the state we found him in earlier, wallowing in melancholy after the unexpected death of his wife Sarah (Reina Hardesty).
As presented by director H.P. Mendoza, Ben and Sarah were practically the cutest couple you could imagine. They published children’s books together and made video diaries for their followers on TikTok, which Ben insisted they turn into a kind of insurance policy so that each...

San Francisco microbudget filmmaker H.P Mendoza is bringing his Bay Area sensibilities to Tribeca.
The filmmaker best known for “Colma: The Musical” about the small town in San Mateo County, California is now turning his camera on a subject less musical but still as likely to become weirdly contagious: the pursuit of self-help. “The Secret Art of Human Flight” premieres at the Tribeca Festival this month, and IndieWire below shares the exclusive first trailer of the movie.
The cast includes Paul Raci, Oscar-nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2021 for his starring role in “Sound of Metal,” and he’s joined by cast members including Grant Rosenmeyer, Lucy DeVito, Nican Robinson, Reina Hardesty, Maggie Grace, and Sendhil Ramamurthy.
Mendoza directs the film from a screenplay by Jesse Orenshein. Mendoza shot the film with “I Think You Should Leave” cinematographer Markus Mentzer.

With the gore unfolding on Zoom-style calls and home surveillance cameras, the story of online influencers being hunted by a killer is very 2021
Shook opens with a smart satirical visual gag. It reveals the cast of characters, a bunch of female online influencers who pimp out various products, arriving at a swanky event, complete with popping flashbulbs. An edit from another angle shows not all is as it seems, which pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the film: a thriller in the stalk-and-slash tradition but one that keeps pulling the rug out from under the viewer’s expectations.
After the first gory bit of wrong-footing, blonde beauty specialist Mia (Daisye Tutor) emerges as the main protagonist. After she arrives at her family home in the suburbs to watch cute lapdog Chico for her sister Nicole (Emily Goss) for a few days, it gradually becomes clear that Mia...

"What do you want?" "I need you to make a choice." Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for a horror thriller titled Shook, yet another new social media horror story. Three young men head for a Montreal brothel in this uplifting, refreshingly non-judgmental road movie
This is a US remake of a 2013 Belgian comedy, itself based on a BBC documentary about disability rights activist Asta Philpot. Both features transform his true story into a refreshingly non-judgmental road movie in which three young men ditch their families and set off to a brothel in Montreal, hoping to get their “special” needs met.
Come As You Are would have been a worthwhile project even if it had been a shot-for-shot remake, repackaged for the subtitle-averse US market: the more people who get to see three-dimensional representation of people with disabilities, the better. But Erik Linthorst’s script makes improvements, too, including giving juvenile horndog Scotty (Grant Rosenmeyer) a talent for writing raps, and a delayed reveal of one crucial plot point. You may consider yourself the most pitiable speck in the universe,...

Years ago, we covered Hasta La Vista, a Belgian comedy that was full of charm, in a story based on the real life experiences of Asta Philpot. Now, a decade later, comes an American remake entitled Come As You Are – and to mark the occasion we spoke to the film’s leading star, and producer, Grant Rosenmeyer.
Discussing the film on Zoom (a shame as it feels like Grant would make for a fun in-person interview), we speak about his involvement in the project and how he became aware of the story and original movie. He comments on working so closely with Asta during this process, and what he’s taken away from producing for the very first time.
Rosenmeyer also speaks about the positive response the film has received from the disabled community, while he also speaks about the tumultuous socio-political landscape of the US at present, and how...

Described by our own J Hurtado as "a charming, poignant, affectionate take on the road trip movie" (quote from his positive review), the film follows three young men with disabilities as they embark on a journey that may, possibly, change their lives. The official synopsis notes the reason for their trip is to "flee their overbearing parents on a road trip to a brothel in Montreal catering to people with special needs. Too often, we define marginalized groups as targets of oppression or as social justice fighters, but rarely as just regular people who wake up every day, pee, go to work and have sex like the rest of the world. Director Richard Wong attempts to offer this more humanized narrative that centers on disabled characters in his surprisingly tender new comedy, “Come As You Are.”

"Goin' to the chapel and we're gonna get married," sang The Dixie Cups in "Chapel of Love," written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector. In Come As You Are, three young men with disabilities are most definitely not going to a chapel intending to marry. Instead, per the official synopsis, they "flee their overbearing parents on a road trip to a brothel in Montreal catering to people with special needs." Hmm, this really does not sound like The Dixie Cups. The synopsis continues: "Sam (Gabourey Sidibe), a traveling nurse, drives the three guys across the border as they go on this trip to lose their virginity and embrace their independence. A remake of the award winning,...

"To our boners!" Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie sex comedy titled Come As You Are, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. It also went on to play at the Traverse City, Calgary, Tallgrass, Philadelphia, and Napa Valley Film Festivals throughout the past year. This film is yet another of the English-language remakes of European films (this one is based on Hasta La Vista). Three young men with disabilities hit the road with a jaded nurse as a driver to a brothel in Montreal catering to people with special needs. Starring Grant Rosenmeyer, Hayden Szeto, & Ravi Patel, plus Gabourey Sidibe, Delaney Feener, Asta Philpot, Janeane Garofalo, and C.S. Lee. This looks like an amusing, uplifting "buddy pic" about some folks who don't normally get the spotlight in indie comedies. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Richard Wong's Come As You Are,...

A charming remake of the Belgian comedy Hasta La Vista, inspired by actual events, Richard Wong’s Come As You Are is the story of three men with various disabilities who set out on an international road trip highlighting the very real need to be touched. Of course, for 24-year-old Scotty (Grant Rosenmeyer) a quadriplegic amateur rapper, he wants a little more than to be touched by his loving mother Liz (Janeane Garofalo). Crudely, there is one part of his body that still works.
Matt (Hayden Szeto) is a new client, a boxer whose body has just started to fail him. He’s recently confined to a wheelchair and having trouble adjusting to the new demands. Scotty, by comparison, has been wheelchair-bound with limited mobility since birth. The third member of the trio, Mo (Ravi Patel), is a blind 35-year-old who works at a clinic where he meets Scotty and Matt.

The rare remake that’s actually a slight improvement on its predecessor, Richard Wong’s “Come as You Are” translates Geoffrey Enthoven’s 2011 Belgian “Hasta la Vista” to middle America. Other changes are less substantial, but this seriocomedy has a less formulaic feel than the original while remaining a crowd-pleasing buddy pic-caper with a soft-pedaled minority empowerment theme. Reception in real-world disabled communities may be somewhat muted by the casting of able-bodied actors in the lead roles. Nonetheless, it’s hard to entirely resist this loosely fact-inspired tale of three physically challenged men road-tripping to Montreal in order to lose their virginity at a “special needs” bordello.
Sticking close in outline to the earlier screenplay by Mariano VanHoof and Pierre de Clercq, Erik Linthorst’s script centers on a trio of protagonists all stuck living with their parents in adulthood. Paraplegic Scotty, whose congenital defect makes him particularly dependent on...

Exclusive: Three disabled men, one no-nonsense nurse and a trip to a brothel that caters to people with special needs. That pretty much sums up the SXSW film Come As You Are directed by Richard Wong and written by Erik Linthorst.
Based on the 2011 Belgian film Hasta La Vista, the dramedy stars Grant Rosenmeyer, Hayden Szeto, and Ravi Patel as the aforementioned trio who escape their overbearing parents so that they can go to a Montreal brothel to lose their virginity and embrace their independence. Sidibe stars as a nurse who drives the three to said brothel and as seen from the brazenly funny clip above, she doesn’t take anyone’s lip — and don’t call her sweetheart.
The film also stars Janeane Garofalo and C.S. Lee. Executive producers are Franklin Leonard, Ted Reilly and Kelly Waller with Rosenmeyer, Barrett Stuart, and Jacqueline “Jj” Ingram serving as producers.

The capital city of Texas prides itself with their motto “Keep Austin Weird” and it spills over into their well-known events — especially South by Southwest (SXSW). Since its debut in 1987, the festival has become a holy trinity of music, interactive and film — and it has grown into a premiere festival and conference which attracts people from all over the globe. In particular, the film festival has remained consistent with its brand, featuring numerous films that range from unorthodox art house pics to bold comedies to risk-taking drama to the unapologetically bizarre genre features. At the same, all the films seem to connect in a “weird” way that makes a statement and resonates with audiences. If Sundance and Tiff had a rebellious sibling who liked to shake things up an make things fun when it came to film festivals, SXSW would be exactly that. From March 8-17, SXSW will continue the...

The rarest of items can claim a collector’s soul if he/she isn’t careful. When that item — something thought to be merely myth — is held in your hands, you never know what you might do to ensure it stays there. Some collect for the thrill of the chase, others for the sense of ownership possession provides alongside the jealousy it instills in those without. Which one you tell yourself you are isn’t necessarily the truth, though. We want to believe our intentions are pure, but the allure of victory is a potent thing able to push us past a line we never believed we could cross. This is the point where Alan (Grant Rosenmeyer) and Paul (Ronald L. Conner) found themselves twenty years ago.
This is what derailed them, turning their teacher and record shop owner respectively into criminals. They each wanted an elusive copy of a...

Jon Lovitz plays a smarmy Southern lawyer with knowledge of a valuable – and perhaps cursed – vinyl record in the new trailer for Chasing the Blues. Scott Smith directed the dark indie-comedy, which hits select theaters on October 5th.
The clip opens in a nondescript jail, where Lovitz’s character, Lincoln Groome, visits inmate Alan Thomas (Grant Rosenmeyer), a former record collector once focused on finding a rare 1930s blues LP. “Six weeks ago, a man died,” Groome says. “Jumped through a six-story window with a sheet tied ’round his neck.

'Money Monster' with George Clooney and Jack O'Connell: TV celebrity and unwise investor/hostage taker. 'Money Monster' review: Jodie Foster movie suffers from both qualitative and intellectual disconnect Sometimes there's a difference between what a movie thinks it is and what it actually is. Usually it's a qualitative disconnect, as in “this movie thinks it's exciting but it's actually boring” or “this movie assumes Kevin Hart is funny when, in fact, he's not.” In the case of Money Monster, the divide is also an intellectual versus anti-intellectual one. The fourth film directed by Jodie Foster fancies itself a ripped from the headlines wail from the bottom of the economic ladder. A thriller-cum-exposé into how Wall Street and big media suckered average Americans into following the Pied Pipers of TV's financial punditry class over the cliff into economic ruin. However, the movie we're really getting is...

Fox finishes off demo six-pack
The Fox trot continued last week as Simon Cowell and a scrawny 11-year-old guided the network to a record sixth straight win in the key 18-49 demographic. Meanwhile, not even President Bush could stop a dominating performance from CBS' Survivor: The Amazon. In racking up another demo victory, rebounding Fox was guided as usual by American Idol, with acerbic judge Cowell, but also by Sunday's strong premiere of Oliver Beene. The nostalgic sitcom starring Grant Rosenmeyer as a preteen in 1962 retained 100% of its lead-in from The Simpsons, according to figures from Nielsen Media Research. Thursday's primetime news conference with the president discussing the standoff with Iraq delayed the start of primetime by 52 minutes for the Big Four networks. But CBS still generated huge numbers with the post-Bush Survivor, the week's No. 1 program in both 18-49 and total viewers.

'Beene' count boosts Fox to Sunday wins
Bill Clinton and Bob Dole's inaugural outing as newsmagazine commentators delivered a decent bump for 60 Minutes on Sunday, but the evening's truly notable debut belonged to Fox's sitcom Oliver Beene. Starring Grant Rosenmeyer as a preteen in 1962 in Queens, N.Y., Beene easily won its 8:30 p.m. slot and was Fox's most-watched comedy premiere (13.8 million viewers, 6.1/15 in 18-49) since the debut of Titus in March 2000. In the demo, Beene retained an impressive 100% of its lead-in, The Simpsons (6.1/16). If the numbers hold up next week, Fox might have a hit on its hands. Meanwhile, CBS' 60 Minutes revived its "Point/Counterpoint" opinion segment with the first of 10 taped pieces from Clinton and Dole, who faced off in the 1996 presidential campaign. 60 Minutes averaged 17 million total viewers, 18% higher than the program's average season-to-date performance, according to preliminary figures from Nielsen Media Research. Clinton/Dole earned a collective yawn from younger viewers, however. In the 18-49 demographic, 60 Minutes scored a 3.0 rating/9 share -- actually down 3% from its season average.
