10 Clues That Spoiled Lost's Big Ben Linus Twist
Image
One of the biggest twists in Lostwas when the mysterious Henry Gale turned out to be Ben Linus, leader of the island's Others. However, perhaps only with the aid of hindsight, the show foreshadowed this big reveal from the moment the character appeared on-screen. What makes this even more impressive is the knowledge that Michael Emerson wasn't necessarily supposed to be as important a character at first.

While much of Lost was planned since the pilot, the writers were not afraid to change course or wait to define specific mysteries. The importance of "Henry Gale" was one such audible. The producers liked Emerson's performance so much they decided to keep him in the series. Still, from the moment the character appeared on-screen, there were signs he was much more important to the story than he seemed.Ben Linus was one of Lost's most incredible characters, and the seeds for his nefarious journey,...

Nicole Kidman Had To Pause Babygirl Filming Due to Overwhelming Intimacy Scenes
Image
Nicole Kidman's newest project won't see a theatrical release until December 25, but Babygirl has already begun to turn heads due to the film's notoriously kinky content. However, Kidman revealed that Babygirl's many, many sex scenes were often overwhelming for the star to shoot, leading to incredibly vulnerable moments where Kidman had to pause filming and felt like she didn't want to be touched anymore.

In this boundary-breaking erotic thriller from Bodies Bodies Bodies director Halina Rejin, Kidman plays a powerful CEO who strikes up an affair with a young intern portrayed by Harris Dickinson, best known for his roles in The Iron Claw and A Murder at the End of the World. Their relationship is far from wholesome, though Kidman's character finds release from her workaholic lifestyle by allowing herself to be completely dominated in the bedroom. While Kidman is no stranger to racy performances one of her earlier movies,...

Lost Ending, Explained
Image
Two decades ago, the debut of ABC's Lost might have been the peak of an era of television that has since passed on. It's fitting, because the show about castaways on a magical island was all about letting go and facing change. Yet, even though the producers spent years crafting a definitive ending for the series, some viewers don't really understand Lost. In fairness, however, that's part of the fun. In the new Getting Lost documentary, series co-creator Damon Lindeolf reveals the finale of HBO's The Sopranos inspired them. Specifically, the ambiguity of the ending and creator David Chase's unwavering refusal to try to explain it.

Dealing with themes of identity, forgiveness and even higher philosophical ideas, Lost is a series that's meant to be pondered, not explained like the equation hidden in a math word problem. Some things are meant to be open questions. Was "Dave" ever real,...

Lost's Major Character Deaths, Ranked
Image
ABC's Lost ran for six seasons and produced 121 groundbreaking episodes of television, but the series immediately found success as soon as its pilot episode aired. Lost was television that set new standards for serialized storytelling and dramatic mysteries, and the show is still a major influence on the medium more than a decade later. Lost drew in viewers through its mysterious island, grander mythology, and non-linear storytelling that indulged in flashbacks, flashforwards, and even "flash-sideways." Lost generated suspense in many diverse ways, but character deaths were always major events that would change the series' status quo.

One of Lost's most striking details was the massive size of its cast. Season 1 had more than a dozen characters, and each new year would bring more individuals into the mix. A huge cast and a dangerous island meant that many of these characters were destined to become casualties. Lost is full of losses,...

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.

This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.

The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. Strike-Delayed Writers Guild Awards Nominations Revealed
Image
The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.

In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.

As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The guild and the Oscars mostly are on the same page for Original Screenplay, with both nominating The Holdovers, May December and Past Lives. The WGA also cited Air, while the Academy went with Anatomy of a Fall and Maestro. But the Writers Guild also has Barbie on its Original List, whereas the script for 2023’s No. 1 movie...

WGA Award 2024 Nominees Include ‘Past Lives,’ ‘American Fiction,’ and Surprise Pick ‘Air’
Image
The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.

The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.

Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.

Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

Chris McCumber Exits As Blumhouse Television President; Division Undergoes Layoffs
Image
Exclusive: Chris McCumber is departing Blumhouse Television after three years as President. The unit’s President of Production, Jeremy Gold, will step into the top role on an interim basis. A search is underway for a new head of the TV group, which is getting downsized, with several people — believed to be fewer than 10 — being laid off today. (Blumhouse’s total headcount in film and TV is almost 100.)

The staff reductions are coming mostly from the TV division’s Creative and Business Affairs departments, sources said. The unscripted group, led by Gretchen Palek, will remain intact, as will Blumhouse’s shared services groups including Production, Casting, Hr, Marketing and Finance.

Blumhouse TV scripted head Chris Dickie (EVP Scripted Programming and Development) is staying put and will be assisting Gold during the transition, with Gold stepping up his role on the slate of Blumhouse TV series that are expected to go...

Bill Hader on Turning Point for Barry in the HBO Series: “A Nice Reminder That He’s Not a Good Guy”
Image
Bill Hader is opening up about what he thinks is the turning point in Barry Berkman’s life in his HBO series Barry.

Ahead of its series finale on Sunday, Hader had one specific moment that came to mind when he was asked what Barry’s point of no return was in the Emmy-winning show.

“I always felt a big turning point was when Barry killed Chris [his war buddy, an amiable family man who knew too much],” Hader told the Los Angeles Times. “That was kind of the moment.”

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter tied to that episode in Barry season one, writer Liz Sarnoff broke down the scene and explained that they wanted to ensure audiences felt like Barry didn’t have a choice. He had to kill his friend because he’d lose everything if not.

“At the same time, you see from Chris [Marquette], ‘Oh, this is how you should feel — how a normal person feels — when they kill someone,...

The Latest ‘Barry’ Is as Funny as Hopeless Desperation Can Get
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 7, “A Nice Meal.”]

For all the shows that “Barry” shares DNA with — crime dramas, black comedies, metaphysical treatises on morality — as the end nears, it’s easiest to see “Barry” as basically a more dangerous version of “The Other Two.” Hollywood satire, over-confident narcissists plummeting to depths of their own digging, relationships shredded in a heartbeat. Add a few extra corpses to the Dubek family’s peaks and valleys and you get something roughly approximating where “Barry” finds itself now: desperation, death, and jokes.

Writer Liz Sarnoff has long been helping “Barry” deliver some hard truths and difficult fates in second-to-last episodes of seasons (much like George Pelecanos did for “The Wire”). Here, she returns for “A Nice Meal,” a fourth and final Episode 7 to put a bow on these time jump transformations — not to show that all these characters are necessarily right back where they started, but that each of them has...

Jennifer Lawrence Could Have Made A Cameo In Barry Season 4 Episode 6
Image
This article contains spoilers for season 4, episode 6 of "Barry."

There have been some amazing cameos in the fourth season of HBO's "Barry," including Guillermo Del Toro, "Coda" director Sian Heder, and Fred Armisen, but we almost got a cameo from none other than Jennifer Lawrence. The "Hunger Games" and "Causeway" star would have played herself, much like Heder, and it could have given her a chance to show off both her dramatic and comedic chops. In the end, showrunner and star Bill Hader decided to take the story in a different direction that omitted Lawrence's role, and we got something completely different (and totally terrifying) instead.

Hader sat down with The Wrap to discuss the sixth episode of season 4, which he detailed as a chaotic experience that ultimately turned out great. There were several storylines that got changed or dropped, so Lawrence's wasn't the only one, but from what it sounds like,...

Bill Hader on ‘Barry’ Episode 6’s Scrapped Storylines and Last-Minute Reshoots: ‘I Make a Lot of Mistakes!’
Image
Bill Hader is certainly happy that people like “Barry,” but he also wants to be clear: the episodes you see are the product of a lot of refinement. Specifically in Season 4 Episode 6, there was an entire Sally storyline that would have (maybe) involved Jennifer Lawrence that was jettisoned and a scene that was reshot mere weeks before the series premiered.

“When you’re doing this stuff, people can tell you you’re great until they’re blue in the face, but you make a lot of mistakes,” Hader told TheWrap in our episodic breakdown interview for Episode 6. “People watch the show and go, ‘Oh my God it’s so good,’ and it’s like, ‘No, I make a lot of mistakes!’ You need smart people who aren’t afraid to tell you you’ve made a mistake to be like, ‘What are you doing?’”

Initially, Sally (Sarah Goldberg) was going...

Bill Hader on ‘Barry’ Episode 5’s Big Swing: ‘It Was Nice to Do Something That Felt Completely Different’
Image
The following contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4 Episode 5.

After a jaw-dropping cliffhanger from last week’s “Barry,” the HBO series takes a hard left turn midway through its final season to offer something completely different: heaven. Or, at least, Barry’s version of heaven.

“Barry” Season 4 Episode 5 picks up eight years after the events of the last episode with Barry (Bill Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) now living on the run under different names, and as parents to an eight-year-old son named John. For Barry, this is idyllic: an isolated house in the middle of nowhere with the family he always wanted. For Sally, it’s hell: she’s working a waitressing job and can’t stand Barry, and has no interest in being a mother.

Hader told TheWrap in our latest episodic interview for “Barry” that the idea was to live in this time jump for a while before...

Bill Hader on That ‘Barry’ Time Jump and Shadowing the ‘Better Call Saul’ Writers
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Barry season four, episode five, “Tricky Legacies.”]

Barry star Bill Hader didn’t care how Barry and Sally got to where they were going; his only concern was that they were there.

Written and directed by Hader, the fifth episode of Barry’s final season confirms that the ending of episode four was anything but fantasy. It’s now been eight years since Barry and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) decided to run away together and the couple, who are now known as Clark and Emily, are living with their son, John (Zachary Golinger), in the middle of nowhere. Barry is suddenly a man of faith who perpetually stays at home to school his son and shelter him from the truth of who his parents actually are. Meanwhile, a wig-donning Sally is working as a server at a diner, and she routinely drowns her sorrows in a bottle to get through the days. She may have had dreams of being a working actor,...

"Everyone Fought Me On It": Barry Season 4's Big Death Addressed By Bill Hader
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season 4 of Barry

Bill Hader addresses that major death in Barry season 4, revealing that he received pushback for it. After a gradual start to its final outing, Barry season 4, episode 4, permanently shifts the storylines. Towards the end of the episode, titled "it takes a psycho", NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) has a difficult fight with Cristobal (Michael Irby). Their romantic relationship, and any communication between them, looks to be over after Hank has fallen back with the Chechen mob and betrayed his existing crew. But because Cristobal "knows too much", as Hank says, he can't be allowed to walk away and he's ultimately shot down by the Chechens — with Hank's full knowledge.

In an interview with The Wrap, series star and co-creator Bill Hader opened up about the decision to kill off one of the long-running members of the Barry cast. Hader, who also directed...

Bill Hader on Those ‘Barry’ Episode 3 Cameos and That Hank Call: ‘That’s a Huge Moment’
Image
Those surprised to see Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro in the latest episode of “Barry” may also be surprised to learn the cameo was del Toro’s idea – not that he thought it would actually happen. Creator and star Bill Hader says the “Pan’s Labyrinth” director has always been a fan of the HBO series, and told Hader at the end of Season 3 that he’d love to be in the show.

“It just so happened we had a part of this guy who sets up Hank and Cristobal with Los Amigos Gadgets, so I thought that’d be great for Guillermo and then we named the character Toro,” Hader told TheWrap during our breakdown of Season 4, Episode 3. “He seemed surprised that I actually did it. I was like, ‘You asked me and I wrote you a part, it’s called Toro.’ And his reply was, ‘Oh s–t, I...

Bill Hader Reveals ‘Barry’ Season 4 Is ‘Totally Different’ From What He Originally Envisioned
Image
Bill Hader insists he never had any long range plans for “Barry’s” storylines.

At the Los Angeles premiere of the HBO series’ fourth and final season on Sunday, Hader told Variety when he first began the process of developing and pitching “Barry” seven years ago, he had “no idea where the series was going to end up.”

In fact, he says, Season 4 is “totally different” than his original plans. As the series wrapped, Hader revealed those final days were “very bittersweet,” but everyone was “also so tired, we were exhausted,” he said, laughing.

“Barry’s” fourth season picks up with Barry in prison after killing Janice (Paula Newsome), his mentor Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) girlfriend, in Season 1. “I had some sense of where we were headed,” said Sarah Goldberg, who plays Sally. “But I was very surprised by all the details on the way there.”

Goldberg was happy...

Barry Season 4 trailer: Bill Hader is irredeemable in a hard-hitting look at the HBO drama’s final bow
Image
The curtain is closing on Barry, HBO‘s dark comedy series about a hit man from the Midwest who moves to Los Angeles and falls in love with the stage. HBO released its Barry Season 4 trailer on Wednesday, featuring Bill Hader’s irredeemable character losing his grip and creating chaos, even behind bars. The Emmy-winning series returns with the first of eight episodes on April 16, 2023, on HBO, with new episodes every Sunday until the May 28 series finale.

Here’s the official logline for Barry Season 4:

Cousineau (Henry Winkler) is hailed as a hero as Barry’s (Bill Hader) arrest has shocking consequences. It’s all been leading up to this – Barry’s explosive and hilarious final chapter.

That description isn’t much to go on. HBO may be trying not to spoil the events, but still, talk about crumbs. In HBO’s Barry Season 4 trailer, Barry (Bill Hader) is...

‘Barry’ Season 4 Trailer: Bill Hader Is Behind Bars in HBO Dark Comedy’s Finale
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 3.]

Barry Berkman’s final bow is almost upon us. The final trailer for the fourth and final season of “Barry,” Bill Hader’s pitch-dark comedy series, has been released by HBO, ahead of its April premiere date.

Hader, who co-created the series with Alec Berg, stars in the series as the title character, a depressed Marine vet-turned-hitman who moves to Los Angeles for an assignment, where he unexpectedly falls in with a group of aspiring actors and discovers a love for performing. Despite his questionable talent level, Barry decides to pursue this new passion and leave his criminal life behind, but finds himself frequently causing tragedy in the process.

Season 3 of the show, which aired last year, ended at a major turning point for the show; Barry, after many narrow calls, gets arrested for his crimes thanks to a sting operation carried out by his former acting teacher and mentor...

Bill Hader Insists He’s a Good Person in Trailer for Final Season of ‘Barry’ (Video)
Sarah Goldberg
A new, full-length trailer for “Barry” Season 4 has arrived, offering a closer look at what to expect from the final eight episodes of the Emmy-winning half-hour series. Hader’s Barry is in jail following the Season 3 finale’s big sting operation, and we get glimpses of how those around Barry – Sally (Sarah Goldberg), Gene (Henry Winkler), Fuches (Stephen Root) and Hank (Anthony Carrigan) – are dealing with this new development.

“The guy I was dating in LA killed my acting teacher’s girlfriend,” Sally is heard saying in the trailer, followed by, “I think I might be in a lot of trouble.”

Barry is in jail, seen really laying it on himself as he deals with the consequences of his actions. Fuches is also in jail, and it appears as though he’s in the same prison as Barry.

Hader directed all eight episodes of this final season after making his...
