New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of November 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a horror western, a gory tale of bad science, and a supernatural slasher.
Craze (1974)
Image: Craze (1974)
Directed by Freddie Francis.
The choices for movies to watch on Occult Day (November 18) are endless, but what about the lesser known Craze? This adaptation of Henry Seymour‘s novel The Infernal Idol is a grisly delight. Jack Palance (Alone in the Dark) is the murderous antiques dealer whose killing spree is done in the name of an African idol.
Here Palance goes around butchering women as part of a series of sacrifices for the aforesaid idol. His plans to lure and slay his targets become...

It’s a story we’ve all heard before. Parents leave their kids home alone for a few days and the unsupervised kids throw a party and wreck the place. That’s how it goes when 12-year-old Glen is left in the care of his 15-year-old sister Alexandra… But these kids also get into a whole new level trouble while their parents are away. They open a tunnel to Hell in their back yard, conjuring demons that play mind games with them and then become a physical threat. This is what happens in the 1987 film The Gate (watch it Here) – and if you haven’t seen this one, it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
The Gate started with a screenplay written by Michael Nankin, who had co-written and co-directed the 1980 comedy Midnight Madness. Upset that a project he had been working on fell apart, he decided to...

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of August 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a horror take on a classic fairy tale, a creature-feature, and more.
Dead Kids (1981)
Dead Kids a.k.a. Strange Behavior (1981)
Directed by Michael Laughlin.
While College Colors Day (August 30) is a time to be proud of your alma mater, the students and faculty of Galesburg University likely feel less spirited after the events of Dead Kids. In this sci-fi/horror chiller, college experiments on a Midwestern community’s young people result in murder. Several, in fact. The guinea pigs’ homicidal impulses amount to a few rather creepy sequences in this “bad science” slasher.

We’ve talked a lot about what makes a black sheep a black sheep. It can be a number of things really. We look at horror series and see what the underappreciated or even outright hated ones are to lift them up and defend them. It can also be a relatively underseen or unknown entity in the career of an actor, director, or series of films to shine a light and get it on more radars. A black sheep can be seen as bad at the time of its release (or even now) and just needs someone to speak of the positives for the flick. The Gate II (get it Here) is, well, it’s all of that. It’s a mostly underseen and unknown movie in a short horror series that is not really loved by the people who have seen it. With the first movie in the series being a spooky kids classic,...

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, with the tenth day getting into the anti-festive spirit for all the holiday grinches out there. This is for those that approach December with a “bah humbug” attitude and prefer any iconography or holiday theming to be kept to a minimum when it comes to horror. Most of these ten horror titles are technically set on or around Christmas, but can’t muster up enough cheer to really embrace the holiday spirit. Many of which don’t even bother with Christmas at all, beyond a quick scene or mention.
If you’re already sick of Santa Claus, and all things holiday related, here are ten holiday horror movies – technically – that would rather just cut straight to the horror.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

It’s time for a new episode of our The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, and in this one we’re looking back at the 1989 film I, Madman (get it Here). To find out all about the movie, which is also known by the title Hardcover in some countries, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Tibor Takács from a screenplay written by David Chaskin, I, Madman has the following synopsis:
Beautiful bookseller Virginia fosters a growing interest in the works of reclusive novelist Malcolm Brand. After much fruitless searching, Virginia finally receives a package containing Brand’s recent book, “I, Madman,” about a deranged doctor spurned by a beautiful woman. But, as Virginia devours Brand’s latest offering, she begins to have chilling visions of characters from the book — and the line between fiction and reality grows terrifyingly thin.

Blowback is yet another film that begins somewhere in the midst of the story before cutting back to the beginning. In this case, the beginning is Nick playing chess with his hospitalized daughter. She needs an experimental, and expensive treatment to save her life. But a rideshare driver’s paycheck isn’t going to cover that.
Fortunately, he’s not exactly the most honest of people and knows a few people if you know what I mean. He gets a lead on some extremely valuable thumb drives being held at a local bank and decides to pull off a heist. Right from the start he makes a big mistake and involves his ex Veronica (Michele Plaia; Cloudy with a Chance of Sunshine) and her current man Jack.

He’s not joking. A steaming hole has opened up in Glen’s back garden, and while his parents are away for the weekend he’ll have to defend his home from a demonic invasion.
Glen’s main guardian is his older sister, Al (Christa Denton). Together, the siblings and Terry will face ghosts, poltergeists, zombies, moths and hordes of ankle-biting mini trolls. The ancient evil needs two human sacrifices in order to unleash its full power on the world. Any two will do. Can the kids survive the night?...

1987 was an exceedingly awesome year for kid-centric horror movies. In the span of just a few months, we were treated to both Tibor Takács’ The Gate and Fred Dekker’s The Monster Squad, and honestly, there may have not been a better year to be a young genre fan during that decade than in good ol’ 1987. And while there were an incredible amount of quality horror movies for this writer to dig into from that 12-month span of releases, one movie that I always had a deep appreciation for was The Gate, a story that I related to on numerous levels, even if I never happened to summon a horde of demons from digging a hole in my backyard.

For many horror fans with kids, deciding which scary films are appropriate for children can be a challenge. It’s natural to want to pass on a love of the macabre to our offspring and bond over a shared interest in horror, but we also want to protect our children from nightmares or from being scarred by exposure to gratuitous onscreen violence. There are some more obvious kid-friendly choices like The Watcher in the Woods or Something Wicked this way Comes but it can be tricky to determine what is and isn't age-appropriate when it comes to films that were not necessarily made with children in mind. To remedy this, we've begun a recurring segment that spotlights classic titles we deem suitable for most young viewers... at least those old enough to understand the difference between fantasy and reality. Do keep in mind that these are our opinions, and only...

Small asteroids tear apart an abandoned Soviet space station causing its orbit to degrade and one of the modules to crash into the NYC Subway system. Officers of the Transit Authority discover lethal spiders pouring out of the debris. Soon the military arrives and establishes martial law claiming there is a deadly virus contaminating the area. This is the latest installment in a long line of awful monster movies directed by Tibor Takacs. It joins Rats (2003) Mega Snake (2007) and Ice Spiders (2007) in his pantheon of projectile vomit.

You already know what you're in for if you sit down to watch a movie called, simply enough, Spiders. (Doubly so if the film happens to be also known as Spiders 3D.) You're going to get a plot that's been old hat since about 1958, a bunch of airy narrative wheel-spinning that exists mainly to stretch a few crazy spider sequences into a feature-length film, and (obviously) a bunch of spiders running amok and attaching themselves to all sorts of unfortunate people. In the case of Tibor Takacs' half-draggy and half enjoyably stupid Spiders 3D, you'll get all of that and more. Or less, depending on how you approach goofy monster movies about gigantic mutated spiders.
There's only so much charity one can afford to such a plainly low-shooting piece of B-movie silliness, but at its best moments Spiders (3D) does manage to evoke the mutated creatures flicks of the '50s and '60s.

We start at the beginning, from his days loving Star Wars, Rocky and Brando, to what role he gets recognized for most (he also starred on Melrose Place, Days Of Our Lives, and other hit shows), to upcoming projects, his love of arachnids (he’s also been in Ice Spiders), and his working relationship with director Tibor Takacs (who directed Ice Spiders). Here we go! Stay tuned to the end of the interview for three all new, spiffy stills from the film that is out on VOD Right Now.

Campbell plays Rachel, a health department worker who teams with her estranged husband, Mta official Jason (Patrick Muldoon) to stop a giant spider invasion of New York, in the Tibor Takacs-directed film. It’s the latest in a string of genre roles for the actress, also including the 2001 Maniacs movies, Drive Angry and the remakes of Day Of The Dead and The Wicker Man. She was also an executive producer on this year’s Texas Chainsaw 3D.
Fangoria: How did you become involved with Spiders?
Christa Campbell: Tibor and I have worked together on a few other films [among them Mansquito and Kraken: Tentacles Of The Deep], and when Spiders was being talked about, he asked me if I would play Rachel. I read the script and loved it, so I was immediately in.
Fang: Do you have a fear of spiders in real life?
Campbell: Yes, yes, yes! I said to myself when I first came on Spiders,...

Title: Spiders Director: Tibor Takacs Starring: Patrick Muldoon, Christa Campbell, Sydney Sweeney, William Hope, Pete Lee-Wilson A serviceable enough B-feature of the sort that could appropriately induce nightmares in adolescents and arachnophobes, modestly budgeted horror offering “Spiders” opts for action antics when a bit more creepy-crawly tension and mystery would have better suited its story. “Spiders” is set in New York City, but centers around mutant arachnids whose DNA was first discovered in a spacecraft found deep under a Russian ice mountain more than 20 years ago. Gene-spliced in space with many animals, it only took with spiders. This becomes a problem for transit supervisor Jason Cole (Patrick Muldoon) when [ Read More ]
