It’s not even November 25th and already we’re looking for Easter Eggs. Then again time has no meaning in a Remembered Tardis, the enigmatic location for Tales of the Tardis. What is Tales of the Tardis? I’m glad you asked. There are no stupid questions here, despite the best efforts of the comments section (I’m joking. Probably). Tales of the Tardis (I should probably put that on my clipboard now) is a new series of Doctor Who stories, edited to omnibus length with no episode breaks and bookended by appearances from characters connected to the stories. We went into more detail about it here.

Deborah Watling, best known to TV audiences for her work on the original incarnation of Doctor Who, has died following a short battle with lung cancer. She was 69.
Watling’s big break came in 1967, when she was cast as Victoria Waterfield, companion to Patrick Troughton’s Doctor, on the landmark science-fiction program. She would vacate the role after 40 episodes, but would return for 1993’s Doctor Who: Dimensions in Time.

Deborah acted opposite Second Doctor Patrick Troughton in 1967 and 1968, appearing in multiple classic Doctor Who serials including The Tomb Of The Cybermen, The Ice Warriors and many more.
A great deal of her work on the sci-fi drama didn't survive due to the BBC's erasure policy in the 1960s. However, in October 2013, previously missing serials The Web Of Fear and The Enemy Of The World were released by the BBC after being discovered in Jos, Nigeria by Philip Morris.

Strictly for serious Doctor Who fans who won’t mind the ultra-low-budget ethos, and who’ll love the fan-fiction-y tidbits that are catnip to Whovians. I’m “biast” (pro): big Doctor Who fan

It’s hard to remember now, what with so-called NuWho nearly a decade old, but there was long Doctor Who drought throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s, between the cancellation of the classic show and the reboot in 2005. But there were a few attempts to quench the thirst of parched Whovians with unofficial, quasi-authorized semipro films. One of them, 1995’s Downtime, has just been released on DVD for the first time. The Doctor doesn’t appear here — the producers couldn’t get a license to even mention him — but we do get the return of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney...

The 1990s Doctor Who spin-off movie Downtime – starring Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen - is finally getting a disc release…
Good news, everyone! The 1996 Doctor Who spin-off film Downtime is finally getting a DVD release. It’ll arrive on disc next month, on Monday the 16th of November, to be precise.
If you’re unfamiliar, this is a 70-minute story that brought back classic era Doctor Who characters including Nicholas Courtney’s Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Elisabeth Sladen’s Sarah Jane Smith, Deborah Watling’s Victoria Waterfield and Jack Watling’s Professor Edward Travers.
There’s just one catch, though – Downtime was made by Reeltime Pictures, not the BBC. Although regular Doctor Who director Christopher Barry called the shots, the BBC didn’t grant Downtime a licence to include the Doctor, or even reference him directly. Still, it has a soft spot in many fan’s hearts, not least for introducing Kate Lethbridge-Stewart,...

Cliff takes us through ten Doctor Who stories still lost, from Marco Polo to Fury From The Deep...
Doctor Who was for the first twenty six years a series of serials, so episodes make up stories or serials, e.g. Power of the Daleks is a story or serial made up of six episodes, rather than ‘an episode’. Around 250 weekly instalments of Doctor Who were shown between 1963 and 1969. As of January 2014, 97 of these are not held by the BBC, or known to survive, and cannot be viewed - although they can be experienced in a number of ways. Although recent returns have massively helped in evening up the scores, you’ll note that there’s a slight bias towards Hartnell against Troughton for completely missing stories. Troughton still fares worse, however as he has fewer fully existing stories, seven complete stories versus Hartnell’s fifteen.

This time we have the official release of 11 episodes from the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) on iTunes. Here’s the official press release from the BBC:
BBC Worldwide North America announces that a stash of BBC master tapes from the 1960s featuring missing episodes of Doctor Who has been recovered in Nigeria, Africa. The BBC has re-mastered the tapes, and is making two stories, “The Enemy of the World” and “The Web of Fear,” now available exclusively on iTunes (www.itunes.com/DoctorWho).
Eleven Doctor Who episodes were discovered (nine of which have not been seen for 46 years) by Philip Morris, director of Television International Enterprises Archive, by tracking records of tape shipments made by the BBC to Africa for transmission.

Doctor Who fans got a special 50th birthday treat last night, when it was revealed that nine episodes of the BBC sci-fi drama originating from the late '60s, and once thought lost forever, have been returned to the BBC archives.
1967/68's 'The Enemy of the World' - which sees Patrick Troughton play both the second Doctor and his villainous double, the ruthless dictator Salamander - is now available to watch in full, while 1968's classic 'Yeti-on-the-underground' adventure 'The Web of Fear' is also all but complete, with only the third episode still missing - and you can download both stories right now via iTunes.
And while we're thrilling that these two Troughton tales are now available to watch for the first time since original transmission, we now can't stop our Whovian brain from wondering... what else might still be out there?

Doctor Who's Deborah Watling has admitted that she thought the recent discovery of missing episodes was a hoax.
Watling revealed at a screening of recovered stories 'The Enemy of the World' and 'The Web of Fear' that she "couldn't quite believe" the news when she first heard it.
"There have been hoaxes before, let's face it," said the actress - who played the second Doctor's companion Victoria in both stories.
"I thought... it's just another hoax, it won't be me. Because a lot of my episodes were trashed or recorded over - there's only one whole storyline of mine [that remains], which is 'The Tomb of the Cybermen' - which is a great story [and] stands up very well.
"After a few days, it was sort of confirmed-ish... and then I got it from a higher authority and I thought, 'My God, I'll be back on the screen again, all these years later' - it's amazing.

Den of Geek was lucky enough to see newly discovered and restored episodes of The Enemy Of The World and The Web Of Fear…
If it wasn’t such a frustrating waste, the junking of those Doctor Who episodes in the sixties and seventies might be viewed as a marvellous opportunity. Firstly, because it sent fans and the BBC on a global, decades-long, unpredictable scavenger hunt - those are always fun - and secondly, because it offered up moments like today. Moments that, if you’ll indulge the notion, are as close to time-travel as you’re likely to come amidst a herd of journalists eating crustless sandwiches in the basement of a posh London hotel.
Back in 1968, somebody at the BBC, a technician perhaps, maybe a runner, closed a canister that was sent around the world. Sealed in the air of late-sixties London,...

Earlier today the BBC held a press conference to officially reveal the recently uncovered Doctor Who missing episodes that had unearthed. They then promptly embargoed anyone from reporting on the contents of the press conference until after midnight, because apparently the BBC don’t understand what a press conference is for. Details of the conference have leaked, however, and after checking numerous sources I now feel reasonably confident in reporting what we’d all hoped: 9 of the missing episodes of Doctor Who have been recovered, and they’re all Second Doctor stories.
We’d known for a few days that “a number” of episodes had been recovered, which implied at least two and probably more. Then two days ago, I got information that Deborah Watling, who played Victoria during the Second Doctor’s time, and Frazier Hines, who played Jamie, would be at the press conference. That indicated the recovered...

Nine long-lost episodes of 'Doctor Who' from the 1960s have been found. The missing serials were discovered in a storeroom in Nigeria by Phillip Morris, director of Television International Enterprises Archive, who tracked an old shipment of tapes made by the BBC containing episodes of the sci-fi series for foreign transmission. One of the discovered adventures is the classic story 'The Web of Fear', which was first broadcast as a six-part story in 1968 starring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor and Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling as companions Jamie McCrimmon and Deborah Watling. Only episode 1 was in existence in the BBC...

Digital Spy readers named David Tennant as Doctor Who's greatest ever Doctor - now, with just 10 weeks to go until the 50th anniversary, DS is embarking on a new quest... to list the top 10 Who stories of all time.

Series 5 of Doctor Who is often referred to as one of the show's all-time great runs, but it would have been so easy for Patrick Troughton's first full series as the Doctor to get off to a rocky start. While 'The Tomb of the Cybermen' saw the return of fan favourites the Cybermen, it also...

An icy Patrick Troughton adventure is thawed out and given new life on DVD thanks to some animation of lost episodes. It’s the first appearance of a frozen menace that would fade away until reappearing in the current season of Doctor Who. The Tardis arrives on Earth at the time of a new ice age and the Doctor (Patrick Troughton), Jamie (Frazier Hines), and Victoria (Deborah Watling) make their way into a base where scientists commanded by Leader Clent (Peter Barkworth) are using an ionizer device to combat the advance of a glacier. A giant humanoid creature, termed an Ice Warrior by Arden (George Waring), one of the scientists, has been found buried in the glacier nearby.

Doctor Who - The Ice Warriors (Rrp £20.42, released August 26, 2013)
With the Doctor Who publicity juggernaut grinding remorselessly towards the 50th anniversary celebrations, the programme's past is being highlighted like never before.
The latest classic story to be dusted off and lovingly restored is the Patrick Troughton epic The Ice Warriors.
With two episodes missing from the BBC archives, previous releases have always been unsatisfying - but the sterling work of the Doctor Who restoration team in animating the missing segments to the surrounding soundtrack result in an effect similar to replacing a missing tooth in a much-loved smile.
Patrick Troughton has always been the Doctor's Doctor - all subsequent actors who have taken on the role seem to fall over themselves to praise his performance.
Following the irascible anti-hero first Doctor William Hartnell, Troughton set the template of the kindly, gentle but morally-driven Time Lord - and...

Tomb of Cybermen
Kieran Kinsella
BBC America’s July 16 release of Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited 1-4 is dollar for dollar the best DVD set released to date. It features Tomb of Cybermen, Spearhead from Space, and Pyramids of Mars — all of which arguably rank among the top 10 Doctor Who stories ever broadcast. It also contains The Aztecs, a decent enough William Hartnell story that doesn’t quite rise to the level of the other stories in the collection. All in all, you get 16 episodes, 456 minutes of action and it is available at just $39.98
The stories in question recently aired on BBC America as part of the network’s celebration of the show’s upcoming 50th anniversary. The show’s current producer, Steven Moffat provided a commentary which is included in this set. Each story is shown in both its original format and the widescreen feature-length version that aired on BBC America.

One of the most unwavering networks –beyond CBS- is The CW. The mini network and its stable of cult like genre shows have been able to sustain good ratings in the all-important 18-34 demographic, at times beating last place NBC. So far, for the 2012-13 TV season, they’ve only canceled one show, the medical drama Emily Owens, MD. Now, the network has announced early pick-ups of freshman superhero show Arrow, The Vampire Diaries (which is headed into season five, with a potential spin-off called The Originals may be added) and Supernatural –which heads into season nine, becoming the networks longest running show behind Smallville. Beauty and the Beast is also likely to be renewed as well. But other shows like 90210, Nakita, and The Carrie Diaries remain questionable network until the network heads can look over the upcoming pilots.

The Doctor is very good at saving the world, but very poor at sitting still. So when he’s stuck waiting a full year for an invasion to start, it gives a new meaning to cabin fever. The Year of the Slow Invasion, the year The Doctor got involved in Amy and Rory’s life and not the other way around. A very personal episode (featuring the entire world), rife with spoilers, so sit back, and keep your eye on the box.
The Power Of Three

Directed by Douglas Mackinnon
Amy and Rory have been spending more time away from The Doctor, and it seems less and less of a problem to them. But when tiny little boxes appear all over the world, it’s a mystery sure to attract their time traveling friend, which of course it does. But his arrival also attract the attention of...

Following close on the heels of my list of 7 Great First Doctor Stories, I now present to you 4 Great Second Doctor stories! Why only four, you ask?
Well, it’s like this. Back in the day, when video tape was expensive and the BBC didn’t have a lot of storage space, they went through and got rid of the master copies of almost every First and Second Doctor story. This was stopped in 1978, but the damage was done. Over the years, missing episodes have been found, but a lot are still gone.
This means that I didn’t have a great deal to choose from for Second Doctor stories, as there are only seven of his that meet my eligibility requirements of being stories I have seen and intact in one form or another. Three of them, “The Krotons”, “The Dominators” and “The Mind Robber, weren’t that great,...

Warning: Significant spoilers follow!
I’ve never really had the chance to develop much of an impression of the Second Doctor’s companion, Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling). Like most people, I’ve only ever seen her one complete story (“The Tomb of the Cybermen”), and nothing else. She hasn’t even been featured in very many Big Finish audios. But now she’s back, and she’s with the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) and Peri (Nicola Bryant).
“Power Play“, which is the most recent entry in the “Lost Stories” series (stories that were going to be made for the old TV series but, for whatever reason, weren’t). It tells the tale of the Doctor and Peri on the run from what appear to be, essentially, space cops. They arrive on Earth in what I presume to be the current era and find a group of...

Huzzah! After much media brooding and betting about the identity of the new Doctor Who companion, actress Jenna-Louise Coleman was announced at a press call last Wednesday.
The speculation had been gathering at pace of late, with a few whispers of Sophia Myles somehow coming back to Who after playing Madame du Pompadour six-odd years ago. Possibly this was some sneaky red herring paper trail left by Steven Moffat who urged his Twitter followers to follow La Myles, while a forthcoming interview in Doctor Who Magazine could have also been a clue. But no – quite how Sophia will be involved in the next series (at the time of writing this) is a mystery, so apologies if early next week she's announced as the next incarnation of The Rani.
What else? Waterloo Road, a programme that I dip into about once in a blue moon. It's an odd one in that...

Some tombs should remain lost, especially if they contain metallic Doctor Who villains bent on world domination. However, what was lost can be found as this episode from Patrick Troughton.s Doctor was once thought lost forever. When it did turn up it was a reason for celebration which we now celebrate again. The Doctor (Patrick Troughton), Jamie (Frazier Hines), and Vicky (Deborah Watling), arrive on the planet Telos where an Earth archaeological expedition, led by Professor Parry (Aubrey Richards), is attempting to uncover the lost tombs of the Cybermen. With a lot of help from the Doctor the archaeologists enter the tombs. What they find is the frozen remains of the Cybermen and they.re not as dead as...

Here's a bit of fun to warm the hearts of Doctor Who fans. Original director Christopher Barry could not include The Doctor as a character for the original release due to rights issues, but this seems to be getting remedied now for a revised version of the tale, which featured the late Nicholas Courtney as The Brig, Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and Deborah Watling as Victoria Waterfield.
We're assured by Sylvester McCoy that the rather scruffy-looking table in the picture will end up CGI'd into the Tardis centre console, with suitable background dropped into where the green screen currently is.

During Doctor Who's 47 years, companions have come and gone and have stuck by the good Doctor through thick and thin. We've had all sorts of companions, from plucky journalists through to shifty non-public school boys; leggy swinging 60s dolls through to haughty Time Lady ice-maidens and trusty schoolteachers through to – erm, Adric.
For completism's sake, I'm including all the companions of The Doctor, so that means one-offs too, like Adelaide and Christina – they were described in the BBC press releases as companions, so they're fair game. There'll be the equivalents of bronze, silver and gold for each category, so let the tournament commence!

As Halloween approaches, what better time to salute the greatest shrieks of terror in TV and cinema? Here’s Jeff’s top ten...
With Halloween lurking in the near future, now is surely the time for studios to release horror movies en masse, for grocery stores to stock aisles full of candy, and for Den Of Geek to run an article like this one.
10. Jaws - Susan Backlinie
Jaws has a plethora of great sounds. One could talk endlessly about John Williams' infamous two-note ostinato, the best fingernails against blackboard screech in the history of cinema, or even the ka-ching! of movie theatre cash registers in the summer of 75.
What gives that film its immediate, visceral impact is the shark attack in the opening minutes of the film. Poor Chrissie (Backlinie) makes the fatal horror movie mistake of getting drunk, trying to pick up a guy, and taking her clothes off.
