In 2011, director Tate Taylor released his historical drama "The Help," a story that focuses on Black maids working and living with white families in the American South in the 1960s and attempts to put the focus on the maids rather than their (often bigoted and controlling) employers. Based on a novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett, the film stars Viola Davis as Aibileen Clark, Octavia Spencer as Minny Jackson, and Emma Stone as Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, an aspiring writer who takes it upon herself to compile the stories of Black maids, including Minny and Aibileen, to tell the truth about how "the help" are treated — particularly in Jackson, Mississippi. Aibileen works for Skeeter's friend Elizabeth Leeholt (Ahna O'Reilly), a neglectful mother to her young daughter (upon whom Aibileen dotes), while Minny works for the odious and cruel Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her mother (played by Sissy Spacek...

Eric Bana loves a good Steve McQueen movie. During his visit to the Criterion Closet, the Australian actor — known for his performances in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” and Ang Lee’s “Hulk” — started his selections by praising the work of Anthony Hopkins in Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs,” but quickly shifted gears toward one of McQueen’s first films, the 1958 version of “The Blob.”
“I grew up in a time where these movies weren’t readily accessible, so you’d have to wait for them to come on television,” said Bana. “And if it was a Saturday and ‘The Blob’ came on, it was like, ‘Game on, we are sitting through ‘The Blob.” I’ve probably seen this film 10 times over the course of my life.”
He added, “This is one of Steve McQueen’s early films, but…one of the most ridiculous films of all time.

The late David Lynch was always best known for his fascination with the grotesque. Although Lynch never considered himself a surrealist, his films often stretched into the surreal, presenting a dark, bent version of reality where only dream logic applies. His debut feature, "Eraserhead," he once described as "a dream of dark and troubling things." Many celebrated his controversial 1986 neo-noir "Blue Velvet," a film that is full of murder, kink, and aggressive sexuality. He deconstructed soap opera dynamics with his somnambulistic TV series (and subsequent feature film version of) "Twin Peaks," went on a lusty crime spree with "Wild at Heart," and made a shadowy contemplation of shifting identities with his porn-inflected 1997 flick "Lost Highway."
Then, in 1999, Lynch did the strangest thing he could have possibly done. He made a G-rated biographical movie for the Disney company.

In 1967, when he was only 21, the late David Lynch moved to Philadelphia with his pregnant wife, Peggy. The city would change him forever. He moved into a cheap home in an impoverished neighborhood that was lousy with crime. He also felt he wasn't prepared to be a father, although he did very much love his daughter, Jennifer. In the interview book "Lynch on Lynch," the filmmaker said that Philadelphia was a city of fear. People regularly broke into his house, and his car was stolen. "There was violence and hate and filth," he said. He took a job as an engraver, and his thoughts turned dark.
From 1967 to 1970, Lynch began making his first short films, including "Six Men Getting Sick," and "The Alphabet." The former was to be projected on a specially sculpted screen that Lynch made himself, with six human figures emerging from the wall. At about the same time,...

When it comes to the genre of Horror as a whole, there tend to be several common characteristics from movie to movie. It's a safe bet to assume there will be suspense, jump scares, or over-the-top gore. However, regardless of any differences in plot, it is virtually guaranteed that one of the characters will make a string of poor decisions. The beloved Scary Movie films, which will gain another title in 2026 with Scary Movie 6, managed to build an entire franchise around this idea.
As frustrating as these stupid choices are, some don't hold a candle to others. In certain instances, a simple action could've completely changed the trajectory of the story and nullified the threat. The 1991 political thriller JFK is one of the most ambitious films made by writer-director Oliver Stone. With a cast list that includes Kevin Costner, Sissy Spacek, Gary Oldman, and Vincent D’Onofio, the movie is jam-packed with so many stars that it would be easy to blink and miss one. One of those cast members is the late Donald Sutherland. Sutherland was famous for his film roles in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Pride and Prejudice, and The Hunger Games film franchise.
JFK tells the story of Da Jim Garrison’s (Costner) investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. While based on historical events, JFK is rife with conspiracy theories and fictional accounts, making it a hotbed of criticism despite the film winning great acclaim. In the last 50 years, there have been countless excellent adaptations based on Stephen King's stories. In many cases, the movies and TV shows paid tribute to the ingenuity of the King of Horror, proving themselves as brilliant, emotionally charged, and twisted as their sources. A feature that contributed to the success of these adaptations, in several instances, has been the performances of the actors.
Stephen King provides an exceptional foundation with his well-crafted and fascinating characters, but once a story unfolds on the big or small screen, the actors are the ones who bring those same characters to life. Their performances determine whether the tension, fear, and humanity in the author's books resonate with the audience. Some of these portrayals have captured the core of his work so profoundly that they cemented their place in cinematic and television history.

Nicole Kidman is one of the most well-known and celebrated actors today, so it is unsurprising that she has been nominated for numerous awards. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967 and raised in Australia, Nicole Kidman became interested in acting from a young age, and she eventually dropped out of high school to pursue acting full-time. After appearing in several Australian films and television shows, she began to rise in popularity with films like Days of Thunder and Far and Away and became a household name by the mid-1990s.
Today, she is considered one of the best actors of the 21st century and has her own production company. Likewise, with the December 25th release of her new thriller Babygirl, Kidman is back in the spotlight. From the film's premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, Babygirl has already received impressive reviews, currently holding an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Let’s face it. Theatre has been the most successful place for stories about popular musicians. Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen” is selling big on Broadway, as is “Mj.” “A Beautiful Noise,” about Neil Diamond ‘s professional and personal history, had a nice run there, and is touring the country after its run in Los Angeles. We’ve had “Tina,” “Jersey Boys,” The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud,” Carole King’s “Beautiful” and others. A new musical is being tested now about Frank Sinatra. But the most exciting news arrives this spring, when recent Tony winner Jonathan Groff portrays Bobby Darin.
But movies about musical stars? A mixed bag. (including Kevin Spacey in a bad one about Bobby Darin) Documentaries have been the safest form to chronicle the life of famous musicians: Ones about David Crosby, Joan Baez, Springsteen, and Linda Ronstadt. And, of course, “Woodstock” and Martin Scorsese’s “Last Waltz.

Sissy Spacek has been one of America’s top actresses for almost 50 years. Throughout her career she has received six Oscar nominations for Best Actress, seven Golden Globe bids and three Emmy nominations. The New York Film Critics Circle has been so enamored of her work that they have recognized her four times, placing her second behind only Meryl Streep as the organization’s most acclaimed actresses.
Stephen King‘s first novel “Carrie” first brought Spacek international stardom after she initially gained attention in the movie “Badlands.” Spacek has told the story of how she volunteered to do “Carrie” for director Brian De Palma as a favor. Spacek was in demand after her reception in “Badlands,” but after De Palma hired Spacek’s boyfriend and future husband Jack Fisk as the art director for “Carrie,” Spacek read the script, liked it and offered De Palma her services.

In Marc Forster's 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," Halle Berry plays Leticia Musgrove, a woman at the end of her rope. Her husband has been convicted of murder and is executed by the state of Georgia early in the film. Leticia is trying to put her life back together when her son Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun) is hit by a car and dies. Leticia can only find comfort in the arms of a gruff prison warden named Hank (Billy Bob Thornton), whose own son (Heath Ledger) recently died by suicide. What Leticia doesn't know, however, is that Hank oversaw her husband's execution. It's all very complicated, but handled tactfully and with the utmost sensitivity. "Monster's Ball" is a pretty great film.
Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress for playing Leticia at the 2002 Academy Awards ceremony, beating out Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Sissy Spacek, and Renée Zellweger. Her victory was well-deserved.

2024 was a big year for Stephen King, with new books, big plans announced for 2025, anniversaries, more adaptations of his works, and a lot more. The King of Horror has been terrorizing generations of readers for decades, with over sixty books and hundreds of short stories, either exploring fears in supernatural ways or in more grounded, realistic ways. King’s reign in the world of horror started in 1974 with the publishing of Carrie, though it wasn’t the first novel he wrote – that honor belongs to The Long Walk, published until 1979.
Since Carrie, King has been unstoppable and consistently publishing novels and collections with short stories, of which many have been adapted to TV and film, sometimes more than once. 2024 was no exception, and fans of the King of Horror were treated to not only new short stories and novels by King but also big news about some of the many upcoming adaptations of his works.

While Hollywood often rewards charm, good looks, and box-office hits, Tom Cruise’s enduring love from his fans goes beyond the glossy exterior. One of the most defining moments in his career was his bold stance against Harvey Weinstein.

But Cruise didn’t just stand idly by. In fact, his advice was the lifeline that Field and his team needed.

Most readers who enjoy the fantasy genre started consuming speculative fiction in childhood, and it's because of the books read during this period that they maintain a love for these stories. It's likely that the best fantasy books young readers pick up in their youth will hold up well in adulthood because they have universal themes and complex narratives that remain relevant no matter the audience's age. Tales of magic, adventure, and mystery never get old because they all reflect on the real world and communicate messages about how to leave the world better than you found it.
Many of these are part of the best fantasy book series for beginners and can be enjoyed by all readers interested in getting into fantasy. Most, if not all, of these novels have received screen adaptations because of how vividly the stories are and how universally beloved they are. One of the...

The Oscars have found in a new home in France.
Disney+ has picked up exclusive broadcast rights for the 97th Academy Awards, and will offer French subscribers access to the red carpet and the ceremony live from the Dolby Theater on March 2.
Up until this year, French pay-tv service Canal+ held the exclusive license, often organizing marathon late night broadcasts that accented French talent and ran into the early hours of the morning.
Indeed, local interest has significantly expanded in recent years, once Gallic sons like “The Father” director Florian Zeller stepped into the limelight and as French-remakes like “Coda” bounded towards the best picture podium. Zeller even accepted his Academy Award for best adapted screenplay from the Canal+ broadcast studio in Paris.
If anything, that public interest reached a fever pitch once Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” scored across the board nominations and even a win best original screenplay earlier this year,...

From its Southwestern skyscraper surfaces to its bush- and junk car-pocked bedrock, there’s something slightly off-kilter about the America of Wim Wenders’s Paris, Texas. The solidly masculine cast is nothing if not indigenous: For one, when the sun-punched Travis Henderson, played by Harry Dean Stanton, first stumbles into frame, his uncultivated, hirsute face and dusty red cap seem like natural geological formations that have been patiently waiting, cragged and craterous, for us to anticlimactically discover them. And the relationship-oriented, plot-shunning dialogue by multihyphenate creative Sam Shepherd taps into dialectal heartbrokenness without a shred of disassociating local lingo.
But there are tellingly alien factors out there. How did Travis and his brother Walt (Dean Stockwell) wind up with women who drip sophisticated European sex appeal from their ripe lips and honey hair? And why does every truck stop along highway 10 emit the same sickly green aura that glows like a clumsy,...

We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay is reportedly about to embark on another film: revenge thriller Stone Mattress.
With films like We Need To Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here on her impressive resume, there’s no doubt that Lynne Ramsay is a celebrated film director. Given her penchant for making short films too, Ramsay has never been what you’d call a prolific director of features: her last film was 2017’s You Were Never Really Here, and before that, 2011’s We Need To Talk About Kevin. According to a new report, though, Ramsay’s next project may be her second to go before cameras in a single calendar year.
Ramsay has already finished up production on Die, My Love, a film ‘about a woman driven to the brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood.’ Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek all star.

You don’t need to be a Bob Dylan aficionado to appreciate Timothée Chalamet’s transformation into the iconic folk singer. Even if your knowledge of Dylan’s career is limited to a few famous tracks or a vague recollection of his controversial shift to electric guitar, Chalamet’s performance in “A Complete Unknown” is undeniably a career best. He’s emerging as a leading contender for his first Academy Award — a compelling performance that may prove difficult for voters to ignore.

Robert Pattinson has come quite far since his role in the Twilight movies, which, to be fair, was one of his worst acting jobs. Throughout the four films, Pattinson’s performance progressively worsened. However, he did not have much to go on with the vampire character. Pattinson proved to be a performer in films like The Childhood of a Leader, Good Time, and The Lighthouse.

Pattinson was not a fan-favorite when he was cast in the role of Batman. However, he surprised fans with his darker take on the character, something Matt Reeves also got credit for. The film has now set a major benchmark that James Gunn will have to surpass with his Dcu film, The Brave and the Bold. However, Pattinson’s upcoming projects seem to have more promise than his role as the Dark Knight.

Lynne Ramsay, an award-winning director, is making a strong return to feature filmmaking with “Die, My Love. ” It is a psychological thriller that examines the tough sides of marriage, motherhood, and mental health.
Jennifer Lawrence plays a new mother who is dealing with bipolar disorder and postpartum depression, and she’s the star of the show. The movie, based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 book of the same name, moves the story from a French village to the vast Montana farmland, giving it a very American feel.
The movie has an impressive ensemble cast and is produced by the famous director Martin Scorsese. Lakeith Stanfield plays Lawrence’s boyfriend, and Robert Pattinson plays her husband. Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek, both of whom won Oscars, round out the supporting group.
Ramsay, known for telling honest stories in movies like “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” brings her usual passion to the job.

Up next from director Lynne Ramsay is the psychological thriller Die, My Love, and Deadline has shared the first look at star Jennifer Lawrence in the film.
Die, My Love adapts the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz; Ramsay co-wrote the script with Enda Walsh.
The rural American tale is “set in a remote, forgotten rural area; the story follows a mother who struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis.” It’s said to be “a portrait of a woman (Lawrence) engulfed by love and madness.“
Robert Pattinson plays her husband, and Lakeith Stanfield portrays her lover. Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte also star in the psychological thriller.
The book’s synopsis also gives a clearer picture of the emotional intensity. In the novel, “In a forgotten patch of French countryside, a woman is battling her demons embracing exclusion yet wanting to belong, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, yearning...

Jennifer Lawrence returns to her darker roots for “Die, My Love,” Lynne Ramsay’s first film in seven years. Check out a first-look image above.
The thriller is based on Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel, which centers on a woman (Lawrence) ravaged at the crossroads between love and madness.
Robert Pattinson plays Lawrence’s onscreen husband, with Lakeith Stanfield cast as her lover. Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte also co-star.
Ramsay returns to directing for her first feature since 2017’s “You Were Never Really Here.” Ramsay previously teased “Die, My Love” during the 2023 Sarajevo Film Festival, emphasizing the movie’s divergences from the novel. In contrast, the book was about a woman in a secluded French village who grapples with extreme mental health problems after giving birth. Ramsay has taken liberties with source material before, with “You Were Never Really Here” adapted from a Jonathan Ames novella and “We Need to Talk About Kevin...
