Very few of Terry Gilliam's films have been produced without some kind of grievous production problem. Gilliam appears to be cursed, with his films victimized by studio tinkering, bad filming conditions, or the health of his actors. The saga of his "Brazil" is well known to cineastes, and his more recent "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" had to be made twice, after the first version of the film fell through. In 2009, Gilliam released "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," a melancholy nightmare about a mystical closet that travels around in the possession of the titular doctor (Christopher Plummer). Inside the closet is a mystical pocket dimension where surreal dreams are manifested. Dr. Parnassus heads a theater troupe and is immortal, having been tricked by Satan (Tom Waits). Into his company comes the handsome young Tony (Heath Ledger), who may offer salvation. At the very least, Tony offers to spruce...

“Is This Thing On?,” Bradley Cooper’s third directorial feature after “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” is set to close the New York Film Festival. The dramedy’s world premiere is set for Alice Tully Hall on Friday, October 10 — meaning it will skip festivals such as Toronto and Telluride and head straight for NYFF. IndieWire understands the film was not finished in time to submit for other festivals, including Venice. Cooper’s “Maestro” previously played the New York Film Festival in 2023.
Cooper also co-wrote the script, here with Mark Chappell (“See How They Run”) and the film’s star, Will Arnett. “Is This Thing On?” centers on a New York City comedian’s midlife crisis, and it’s inspired by the true story of British comedian John Bishop, who also executive-produces the Searchlight Pictures release. It co-stars Laura Dern, Ciaran Hinds, Sean Hayes, Peyton Manning(!), Amy Sedaris, and Cooper himself.

Warner Bros. has just released the second trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s upcoming film One Battle After Another. This trailer reveals more of the plot and features a more elaborate showing of Sean Penn’s role. Then, we see Leonardo DiCaprio jump into action as his wife becomes a political prisoner. Anderson directs One Battle After Another from his own script. Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infinity lead the cast alongside DiCaprio.
One Battle After Another is Anderson’s latest film since 2021’s Licorice Pizza, a coming-of-age comedy about first love with Cooper Hoffman, Alana Haim, Sean Penn, and Tom Waits. Oddly enough, One Battle is DiCaprio’s first collaboration with Anderson. Their union feels long overdue. Still, this is the perfect project to showcase their talents.

Jim Jarmusch is keeping it all in the family. The auteur reunites with a slew of his frequent collaborators for “Father Mother Sister Brother,” set to be released by Mubi. The film will first premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival in competition, Jarmusch’s first time in that section. The Cannes perennial premiered “Coffee and Cigarettes” out of competition in Venice in 2003.
“Father Mother Sister Brother” is designed as a triptych, with the trio of stories all concerning the relationships between adult children, “their somewhat distant parent (or parents),” per the film’s synopsis, and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country: “Father” is set in the Northeast U.S., “Mother” is in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” is in Paris, France. Per any Jarmusch film, it’s a character study that blends melancholy and comedy.

With its 2025 line-up, announced Tuesday, the Venice Film Festival has (again) taken the award season pole position, with a program packed with a frankly absurd number of must-see movies.
Among the hot awards titles heading to the Lido are Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine, from A24, featuring Dwayne Johnson as two‑time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr and Emily Blunt as his wife Dawn; Luca Guadagnino’s #MeToo–inspired thriller After the Hunt, for Amazon MGM Studios, starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, will premiere out of competition; and Guillermo del Toro’s dark reimagining of Frankenstein, featuring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth, a Netflix production.
This will mark the Venice festival debut for both Roberts and Johnson.

“Dear unholy night, do we need Another Dracula movie”? Folks have been saying this since 1992 when a new(ish) writer couldn’t get anyone to finance his dream project. A project that literally kept him up at night staring longingly at the jugular in his wife’s neck. Well, he found his way when a couple of nice fellows agreed to finance a TV project for him that ballooned into a full-fledged, ocean- and time-spanning epic directed by the dude who made The Godfather. This is the story of the sex-fueled, bloodsucking, weird-as-hell vampire movie that pop culture hasn’t been able to shake off since. This is what happened to Dracula.
While the story of Bram Stoker’s Dracula started in 1897 (and the stories that inspired it long before that) director Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula began during an unfortunate incident making The Godfather Part III. There were a...

A Terry Gilliam satire starring Jeff Bridges, Johnny Depp, Adam Driver, Jason Momoa and Tom Waits? Sounds amazing — except we’ll probably never get the chance to see it. And Gilliam blames the return of Donald Trump.
His next project, Carnival at the End of Days, was supposed to be a movie that’s “great fun for all of those who enjoy taking offense,” Gilliam told The Hollywood Reporter. His script was a spoof of “woke activists with a very narrow, self-righteous point of view. That’s frightened so many people, and so many people have been very timid about telling jokes.”
If that’s true, you’d think that the Monty Python alum would welcome the return of an anti-woke President. But that’s not the case either. For one thing, “he’s fucked up my latest film,” Gilliam explained. “He’s turned the world upside down. So he’s killed my movie.

Terry Gilliam is pointing the finger at Donald Trump for ruining comedy. The outspoken director detailed how his next film, “The Carnival at the End of Days,” has essentially been thwarted amid Trump’s second term as President. “The Carnival at the End of Days” was set to start filming in April 2025; the cast includes Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, and Adam Driver.
Yet now Gilliam is back to the drawing board. The filmmaker told THR ahead of the Umbria Film Festival (where he serves as honorary president) that he will have to “rewrite” the film, as Trump’s presidency has “destroyed satire” as a concept.
“He’s fucked up the latest film I was working on,” Gilliam said of the president. “Because it was a satire about the last several years when things were going as they were. He’s turned it upside down. So he’s killed my movie.

Luxembourgish actor Vicky Krieps says Jim Jarmusch’s new feature, Father Mother Sister Brother, was never designed as a Cannes campaign. “It’s cinema that is not trying to impress,” she told audiences while collecting a Festival President’s Award at Karlovy Vary. Her remark follows the picture’s unexpected absence from this year’s Cannes slate after early trade chatter tipped it for the main competition.
Reports indicate the film was first declined by Cannes, briefly courted for a sidebar, then dropped entirely. Krieps framed the back-and-forth as irrelevant, stressing that Jarmusch “just shoots the film he wants, then lets it travel,” a stance matching his long-held disinterest in festival maneuvering.
Shot quietly last year, the triptych stars Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Krieps, and Tom Waits. Industry watchers link its Cannes exit to a crowded American lineup and persistent whispers about running time. The episode has revived discussion about perceived gate-keeping on the Croisette,...

Jim Jarmusch just wants to make films for the sake of cinema. Jarmusch’s latest collaborator, actress Vicky Krieps, couldn’t help but applaud the indie filmmaker’s nonconformist vision during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Krieps will next star in Jarmusch’s ensemble “Father, Mother, Sister, Brother” alongside Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, and Charlotte Rampling.
“What I really, really love about [Jarmusch] is that he is still just making a movie. He’s not trying to make the next Jim Jarmusch. He’s not trying to go to Cannes,” Krieps said, as reported by THR. “He’s really trying to figure out how to make the movie on set, like a student would make a movie. And that is very, very beautiful.”

Veteran filmmaker Terry Gilliam is headed to the Umbria Film Festival in Italy, where a screening next weekend of his iconic 1985 dystopian black comedy Brazil will celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary. Nominated for two Oscars and winning a pair of BAFTAs, the movie centers on Jonathan Pryce’s Sam Lowry, who works in the sprawling archives of a megalopolis ruled by faceless bureaucracy and an all-seeing Information Department. When a band of terrorists begins sowing chaos, Sam escapes the gray monotony of his desk job through vivid, dreamlike visions — until reality and fantasy collide with explosive consequences.
Gilliam’s own career has been filled with the fantastical, and often courted controversy. He famously clashed with Universal’s then-Chairman, Sid Sheinberg, over the U.S. release of Brazil, which has gone on to be considered a masterpiece of science fiction.
Earlier, during his days with Monty Python, Gilliam co-wrote biblical...

Comedians long to be rock stars, they say, and rock stars dream of being comedians. For proof, look no further than band names that found their inspiration in TV comedies. The Simpsons and The Brady Bunch alone are responsible for at least seven band names between them.
Here are six bands that found their names tucked into the episodes of their favorite television laughers…
1 Fall Out Boy
The first time Fall Out Boy performed, they introduced themselves as Forget Me Not. When it was time for a more permanent alias, Pete Wentz argued for tongue-in-cheek names while Patrick Stump wanted something that referenced Tom Waits.
A bunch of names went on a list, including Fall Out Boy, an obscure reference to Radioactive Man’s youthful sidekick on The Simpsons. Friends voted on the name, and Fall Out Boy rose to the top.

Jack White has released a new music video for “Archbishop Harold Holmes,” a track from his 2024 album, No Name, starring the always-entertaining John C. Reilly as a televangelist-like figure who ends up in a mental hospital. Watch it below.
Directed by Gilbert Trejo, the video was filmed at a church in Los Angeles. It sees Reilly passionately acting out lyrics from the song like, “I realize that you have tried and tried and are just about ready to give up/ But I got good news for you/ God has spoken to my mind and told me to tell you/ To get moving in the right direction for a change.”
According to a press release, Reilly is a longtime friend of White’s, who, upon hearing “Archbishop Harold Holmes,” pitched the veteran rocker on playing the titular character in the visual treatment for the song. White then gave Reilly and Trejo...

We were disappointed when the Cannes lineup came out and Jim Jarmusch’s next film was not on it. But it seems like we just had to wait a little longer.
Efe Cakarel, the CEO of Mubi, which is distributing Jarmusch’s next movie, told a crowd at SXSW London that Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the main competition.
“That’s already confirmed,” he said during a keynote speech at the festival on Friday (via Variety). He also added one other movie joining the lineup that Mubi will be releasing, Paolo Sorrentino’s next movie “La Grazia” starring Toni Servillo.
Venice won’t announce its lineup for some time, but it’s an exciting get for the festival and could be the first of several high profile contenders on the Biennale. Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine” from A24 has been rumored,...

Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is planning to work on not more than 12 movies annually but is already up to 15 movies this year after a hot streak picking up a slew of Cannes Film Festival buzz titles – and the Venice Film Festival has not even started yet, CEO and founder Efe Cakarel told SXSW London on Friday in an energetic appearance that had the crowd engaged late in a busy week.
Cakarel shared his love of the cinema-going experience early in his appearance, saying, “I really focus on theatrical,” and “I am very committed to these films getting as wide a release in cinemas as possible.”
Last year, Mubi released The Substance globally, he highlighted. “It turns out distribution is not rocket science,” Cakarel concluded, adding that the firm is launching theatrical in Italy next.

“We have the new Jim Jarmusch film. We are a co-producer on that, and it’s already confirmed to be in competition at Venice,” Mubi CEO Efe Cakarel said this afternoon during a Q&a session at SXSW London.
The new film from Jarmusch is titled Father Mother Sister Brother and stars Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat. We’d heard from many sources that the film was heading for the Lido, but this is the first time it has been confirmed publicly.
The official synopsis for Father Mother Sister Brother reads: Estranged siblings reunite after years apart, forced to confront unresolved tensions and reevaluate their strained relationships with their emotionally distant parents.

Jim Jarmusch’s long-awaited feature “Father Mother Sister Brother” is set to debut in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, running 27 August–6 September 2025 on the Lido.
The anthology follows three interconnected family stories across the United States, Ireland and France, and marks Jarmusch’s first narrative feature since The Dead Don’t Die in 2019. Its ensemble includes Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Mayim Bialik, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat. Principal photography wrapped quietly in Ireland and France last June.
The road to Venice has been unusually circuitous. Early trade chatter tipped the film for Cannes, yet it was absent from Thierry Frémaux’s April line-up announcement, prompting speculation about a late switch to the autumn circuit. World of Reel later reported that the project “skipped Cannes” and became a leading contender for Venice after the festival’s selection committee passed on it.

“That’s already confirmed,” he told a crowd at SXSW London, where he was giving a keynote speech on Friday.
“Father Mother Sister Brother” — which shot last year — stars Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat.
The film is a triptych, following three separate stories set in different countries and revolving around relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parents and each other. The first part, “Father,” is set in the east coast in Northeastern U.S., “Mother” is in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” is in Paris, France.

a two part piece on Short Cuts (1993) to relaunch our Robert Altman tribute
by Eric Blume
It’s a joy to rewatch Robert Altman’s 1993 masterpiece Short Cuts over thirty years later. I hadn’t seen the film since seeing it in theaters, back in the sweet days where Fine Line Features was the “arthouse” division of New Line Features, a mini-studio from which so many fine films sprung.
Upon revisit, it’s easy to see how this film is a perfect illustration of Lightning in a Bottle. Among its incredible cast of actors are future Oscar winners, past and future nominees, plus some other terrific actors who are always rapturous to watch. And then pepper in Tom Waits and Huey Lewis! The talent in this movie is off-the-charts and each actor feels individually inspired. I’m not sure what Altman did to get them so invested in their small,...

It’s official: Tom Rothman has signed a multi-year extension of his contract as Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. The deal will currently make Rothman the longest serving film chief in Hollywood, and that includes his run at 20th Century Fox.
Some have wondered whether Rothman would ever retire, and the fact of the matter is that he loves the movie business a tremendous amount. This is seen in him being a steadfast proponent of theatrical, and a believer in its future longevity, not just in franchises, but original movies as well. For Rothman, cinema is about the big swings. If theatrical is going to survive, originality must prevail, and sometimes that means co-financing some projects ensuring that they hit the screen.

Mubi, the global streamer, producer and distributor behind “The Substance,” has struck a major three-year co-production, financing and distribution agreement with Our Films, the new Rome-based company founded by prominent European producers Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli.
Our Films, which is part of Mediawan, was launched last year by Gianani and Mieli, and has already become a creative hub for world-class filmmakers from Europe, the U.S. and overseas. Mubi and Our Films share the same passion for artistically ambitious movies that resonate internationally. The agreement also underscores Mediawan’s drive to further strengthen their status as a leading prestige European film studio.
The first film to emerge from this strategic alliance will be the next feature from Paweł Pawlikowski, the Oscar-winning director of “Ida” and “Cold War.”
Mieli previously successfully collaborated with Mubi on three high-profile films: Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeny; Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” starring...

Laika's latest ambitious stop-motion adventure, Wildwood, will now be hitting theaters later than expected. Although it was initially planned to finally release in 2025, the studio has now confirmed to ComicBook.com that the long-gestating adaptation of the novel by Colin Meloy will not see the light of day until sometime in 2026. It's the latest twist for a film that has been in development since 2011, began production back in 2021, and only just last year received its first teaser. Hailing from CEO Travis Knight, who also previously directed Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings, it will mark the animation company's sixth feature film production and their first in seven years after Missing Link in 2019.
That Wildwood is taking so long isn't necessarily surprising, given that stop-motion is a notoriously difficult medium to work with and, according to Knight, this project is particularly complicated. It's based on the first title in a wider...

Cate Blanchett has said she is seriously considering stepping away from acting, citing other personal interests and a long-standing discomfort with public attention. In a recent interview with Radio Times, the two-time Academy Award winner stated that her family often dismisses her comments about retiring, but she remains firm in her intent.
“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett said. “There are a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
Blanchett is currently featured in BBC Radio 4’s upcoming drama The Fever. The interview also touched on her ongoing discomfort with public appearances and celebrity culture. Cate Blanchett is surprising fans by revealing in an upcoming issue of Radio Times (via The Standard) that she is not going to be an actor forever. That’s not to say retirement is imminent for the two-time Oscar winner (“The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine”), but there will come a time when Blanchett leaves the profession behind.
“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett said. “[There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
Blanchett most recently starred opposite Michael Fassbender in Steven Soderbergh’s acclaimed spy drama “Black Bag,” which has earned $21 million at the domestic box office. We lost one of the all-time greats this month. Val Kilmer could and did do it all, from stage to writing to acting to producing, directing, and even singing on more than just The Doors movie soundtrack. Tyler Nichols recently released a wonderfully thoughtful list of his top 10 performances and while we can argue on the order depending on when and how you saw him first, you can’t argue with all the entries being great watches. Unfortunately, you can’t say the same about Kilmer’s horror output. While he had some genuinely fun horror adjacent titles like Red Planet, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Ghost of Darkness – which, I kid you not, can be looked at as a slasher movie starring lions – much of his horror was straight to video. One that wasn’t straight to video and has a more interesting story about its making than...

It’s table stakes at this point to recognize that a significant portion of the eventual Best Picture field will launch at the Cannes Film Festival. Six of the 20 Best Picture nominees premiered on the French Riviera in the last two years. Last year’s Palme d’Or winner Anora became only the third Cannes champion to take the top award — but the second in five years after Parasite pulled off the gambit in 2020. (The only previous Palme d’Or champion to win Best Picture was 1955’s Marty.) That has made Cannes a significant step in awards season, despite its spring calendar placement — and with the Academy increasing its international membership annually, the importance of Cannes will only continue to grow.

In his anthology film “Coffee and Cigarettes” (2003), Jim Jarmusch employs awkwardness as his principal storytelling tool. Across eleven episodes, rather vignettes, the characters participate in an uncomfortable dance over the marriage of coffee and cigarettes. The veil of discomfort reveals underlying social tension, class dynamics, and existential truths. Jarmusch meticulously crafts each scene to resonate a state of unease. The film being dissected into various episodes of raw human interaction enhances the prevailing predicament of emotional limbo, as each segment introduces a new set of characters and their distinct peculiarities and encounters that never quite resolve themselves. The mundane mise-en-scene of the contrastive black & white shots composed of the humble pair of coffee cups and ashtray adds to the tension between the characters.
The awkwardness in these interactions is deliberately choreographed. In the vignette, “Somewhere in California”, musicians Tom Waits and Iggy Pop engage in a discomforting conversation, riddled with concealed ego and insecurities.

The superhero has now taken over cinema thanks to the likes of the MCU and the SnyderVerse but, believe it or not, there was a time when this wasn’t the case. While superhero movies were more of a rarity, a unique send-up of the genre did emerge way, way back in 1999. And it was well ahead of its time...as the divisive response proves. Starring an all-star cast that includes Ben Stiller and William H. Macy, Mystery Men is now headed to free streaming. And, perhaps in this golden age of superhero movies, the comedy can finally get the recognition it deserves.
Directed by Kinka Usher in his feature-length directorial debut, and written by Neil Cuthbert, Mystery Men is loosely based on the "Flaming Carrot Comics" by Bob Burden. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Claire Forlani, Kel Mitchell, Paul Reubens,...

In the trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s One Battle After Another, Leonardo DiCaprio is having a bad day. In the upcoming film, the Oscar-winning actor searches for his daughter while navigating stop gaps, shady characters, and a vexing phone operator. In a rare move, DiCaprio joined YouTube to give the trailer a boost, his first social media account in years. The On Battle After Another trailer blends action and intrigue with dry situational comedy, creating a cinematic mix that demands attention from audiences, even if the genres aren’t your bag.
Paul Thomas Anderson directs One Battle After Another from his own script. Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infinity lead the cast alongside DiCaprio.
One Battle After Another is Anderson’s latest film since 2021’s Licorice Pizza, a coming-of-age comedy about first love with Cooper Hoffman, Alana Haim, Sean Penn,...

The beloved “Star Wars” sequel “The Empire Strikes Back” is set to open this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival on April 24, with director George Lucas presenting the film for its 45th anniversary.
“’The Empire Strikes Back’ is like ‘The Godfather Part II.’ Yes, technically, they’re sequels, the second movie in a series. But they are so much more,” TCM’s primetime anchor Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “The first ‘Star Wars’ picture in 1977 ignited a new era in Hollywood and turned a generation of young people into passionate movie fans for life. Then, somehow, three years later, along comes ‘Empire,’ which might even be better. It’s a stunning accomplishment and surely stands one of the great achievements in the history of film.”
Additional titles that will screen at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival include “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “The Lady Eve,” “Cinderella,” “Apocalypse Now,...
