The “Snowfall” spinoff pilot at FX has added three series regulars, Variety has learned exclusively.
Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III have all joined the pilot alongside previously announced leads and original series alums Gail Bean and Isaiah John. Variety exclusively reported on the pilot order in March. While Bean and John will be reprising their roles from “Snowfall,” exact character details for the other three are being kept under wraps.
The official logline for the pilot states, “Set in 90s Los Angeles soon after the end of the original series, a recovering addict (Bean) strives to take West Coast rap mainstream despite potential infighting from a harrowing gang war.”
Blackk is best known for his role in the critically-acclaimed Ava DuVernay limited series “When They See Us” at Netflix, for which he earned an Emmy nomination for best supporting actor in a limited series or movie.

When it comes to the "Fast & Furious" franchise, real fans know it isn't about the cars, the money, the action, or the story -- it's about family. But, y'know, also all those other things too. In fact, "Fast & Furious" is so concerned with its overarching narrative that it haphazardly constructed a twisted timeline that's hard for newcomers to process. Starting in 2001, the films were released in this order:
"The Fast and the Furious"
"2 Fast 2 Furious"
"The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"
"Fast & Furious"
"Fast Five"
"Fast and Furious 6"
"Furious 7"
"The Fate of the Furious"
"Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw"
"F9"
"Fast X"
The "Fast & Furious" movies can absolutely be watched, understood, and enjoyed in this order if the viewer relents to the franchise's reckless pace and internal logic. Having said that, there is an alternate viewing order we'll discuss later that...

Always makes me laugh when stars go to parties and then sequester themselves in roped-off VIP enclaves policed by grim-faced bouncers and eagle-eyed personal publicists. There was this odd sight of Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney leaning in from the outside to converse with Emma Stone seated inside the private zone at the afterparty for the Cannes Film Festival competition film Eddington directed by Ari Aster.
Guiney could’ve been invited in or Stone could’ve stepped out. I respect and admire actors of all ranks, and I understand their significance in our culture. And I get that they fear other people — I mean mere mortals. They might have an unapproved snap of themselves taken by someone. Me, for instance. Or they might have to have a conversation about which they weren’t given talking points ahead of time.

This year, the Oscar season prayer has a name, and it is “Sinners.”
With “Sinners,” writer-director Ryan Coogler, one of Hollywood’s most quietly seismic forces, steps into a genre long neglected by the Academy, and once again, reshapes the game. A slow-burn psychological horror film, “Sinners” is not just a pivot for Coogler — rather, it’s a proclamation.
For more than a decade, Coogler has been Hollywood’s quiet revolutionary — symbolizing, for the Black community, a figure akin to our very own Christopher Nolan. From chronicling the final hours of Oscar Grant’s life in “Fruitvale Station,” to reviving the “Rocky” franchise with “Creed,” to breaking barriers with the cultural juggernaut “Black Panther,” Coogler fuses personal and political storytelling with mass appeal like few others.
Now comes “Sinners,” a certified box-office hit and critical darling that stands to redefine both Coogler’s career and the Academy’s stale boundaries around horror.

Sinners has been building hype ever since Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan had studios discreetly read their script in a supervised session. Then, studios began a bidding war for a film that no one knew details about, except that it was a “genre movie.” That genre turned out to be a period vampire film and audiences turned out for Sinners this past week with a huge positive response and rave reviews. In his review, our own Chris Bumbray says, “It’s good enough that I can’t help but hope Coogler eventually parts ways with the MCU (after his next Black Panther flick), as he seems better off playing in his own sandbox. Given the right resources and support, Sinners might be the beginning of a whole new chapter for one of our most exciting, emerging filmmakers.”

Ryan Coogler recently revealed a long list of Hollywood creatives who served as the inspiration for making Sinners. It's a stacked ensemble of risk-takers who helped shape cinema throughout the decades.
Sinners has been a breakout success and has received overwhelming praise from critics. Its box office run has also exceeded expectations. Coogler said that it would have been impossible without the "cinematic influences" of more than 40 filmmakers. "I had the gift ofthe opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry, but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters," he said in a letter via IndieWire. "We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can."

Ryan Coogler's Sinners became one of the most successful original R-rated horror films of the last decade after its April 18, 2025, release. The movie, which stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, has garnered raving reviews from critics, moviegoers, and Coogler's fellow Hollywood peers. So far, it has grossed over $70 million at the box office and marked the best start for an original film since Jordan Peele's Us (2019). In an X (formerly Twitter) post on the film's official account, the director detailed his appreciation for those who purchased tickets and went out of their way to support his record-breaking project.

Ryan Coogler is thanking his fellow titans of cinema for inspiring “Sinners.” The critically acclaimed Warner Bros. feature stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack who return to 1932 Mississippi after surviving World War I. The duo open a blues club and soon are faced with battling Irish vampires who have migrated South. The film marks the latest collaboration between Coogler and actor Jordan, whose 13-year partnership began with “Fruitvale Station.”
Now, Coogler is reflecting on crafting “Sinners” and pointing to the auteurs he calls his “cinematic influences.” “I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry, but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters,” Coogler wrote in a letter shared with IndieWire. “We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move...

“Sinners” director Ryan Coogler has penned an emotional open letter thanking fans for showing up in droves to see the film in theaters, writing that his heart is “bursting” with “eternal gratitude.”
Coogler’s movie, starring Michael B. Jordan as the Smokestack twins, won the weekend, grossing $48 million domestically and $63 million globally.

FX's Snowfall spinoff is officially moving forward. The original Snowfall series, which ran from 2017 to 2023, explored the rise of the crack cocaine epidemic in 1980s Los Angeles. Created by the late John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron, Snowfall followed Franklin Saint’s (Damson Idris) journey into a burgeoning drug kingpin as he partners with Teddy (Carter Hudson), a CIA operative. The upcoming spinoff will pick up soon after the end of the original series as recovering addict Wanda Bell-Simmons begins her career in West Coast rap in the 1990s while a violent gang war rages on.
Variety has now reported that the Snowfall spinoff has secured a pilot order from FX, marking a significant milestone in its development since it was first announced in 2023. The new series will see Snowfall star Gail Bean reprise her role as Wanda, alongside Isaiah John, who returns as her husband Leon Simmons.

The Snowfall spinoff series we exclusively revealed to be in early development in 2023, has officially received a pilot order by FX, Deadline has confirmed. Gail Bean and Isaiah John are set to reprise the roles of Wanda and Leon Simmons, respectively.
As previously revealed, the spinoff is a continuation of the original story set in 1990s Los Angeles as South Central transitions out of the crack era into the gangster rap business, with areas heavily infested by gangs led by the Bloods and Crips. Wanda would serve as the connective tissue between the original show and the offshoot, which is expected to introduce other main characters.
Besides Wanda and Leon from the original series, it is unknown if any other surviving character could appear in the new project. Casting is due to begin shortly with the pilot going into production this summer.

A cult classic comedy franchise starring Ice Cube has multiple installments trending on streaming three decades after the premiere of the first movie. Ice Cube is best known as a rap icon, having been a key member of the gangsta rap group N.W.A., which was formed in 1987. In the early 1990s, he began a career as an actor, making his feature debut in the 1991 John Singleton classic Boyz n the Hood, following that up with performances in Walter Hill's Trespass and Charles Burnett's The Glass Shield.

When John Wayne starred in a movie, he expected all involved to operate at a high level of professionalism — even though he was known for drinking on set, which forced some of his directors to work around his escalating state of inebriation as the day wore on. But Wayne delivered when it counted, and, because he was considered the most bankable star in Hollywood during his prime, no one fought him too hard on the booze.
Perhaps they should have. Combined with his reported five-unfiltered-packs-a-day cigarette habit, the once strapping athlete's health was a mess for the last two decades of his life. He lost a lung to cancer in 1964, underwent open heart surgery in 1978, and ultimately succumbed to stomach cancer at the age of 72 in 1980. Because Wayne never let these struggles slow down his output (he had at least one movie in theaters every year between 1960 and his retirement...

Despite being one of the most profitable franchises in Hollywood, Fast & Furious continues to be a regular subject of tabloid headlines for its ridiculous scandals and controversies. One of the biggest headline-grabbers has been the feud between co-stars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, which muddied the waters and made for an entertaining public spectacle until the latter’s return in 2023.

However, before the aforementioned feud between Diesel and The Rock or Tyrese Gibson’s accusations of colorism in Hollywood, a behind-the-scenes incident led to Fast & Furious getting one of its funniest and most beloved characters in the form of Ludacris.

The awards season is an exciting time for movie fans all across the globe and one of the youngest nominees in Oscar history was actually a double nominee. 1991 saw the release of Boyz n the Hood, a coming-of-age crime drama that has only grown in relevance over the years. While most fans know Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Laurence Fishburne, most aren't aware of the genius mind behind the whole thing.
Boyz n the Hood was written and directed by the dearly departed John Singleton. The film was his directorial and writerly debut, and he brought his absolute best right from the start. At the 64th Academy Awards, Singleton was recognized for his prodigious work, scoring a nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay. At the age of 24, he was the youngest person to be nominated for Best Director (a record he still holds to this day), and many...

Over the course of a film career that has grown over three decades, writer/director Regina King has built one of the most impressive sets of credits of any actor working today. From her early performances in films by John Singleton, King has worked with such other distinguished directors as Cameron Crowe, Taylor Hackford and Barry Jenkins, delivering performances that have showcased her skills in comedy, romance and even action films. All of this work culminated in an Academy Award win for her stunning performance in 2018’s “If Beale Street Could Talk.”
King’s honors are not limited to her performances on the big screen, however. For her work in television, King has won an impressive four Emmy Awards — for the Netflix series “Seven Seconds,” the HBO limited series “Watchmen” and two consecutive Emmys for her performance in ABC’s “American Crime.” In addition, she starred in several successful series — “The Boondocks,...

The late great John Singleton was a filmmaker who was truly ahead of his time and was completely unwilling to ever be confined to one area of focus. While Singleton broke out in Hollywood with his directorial debut, Boyz n the Hood, for which he became the youngest and first Black nominee for Best Director in the history of the Academy Awards, he continued to make interesting genre movies. Some may have seen Singleton’s shift towards Hollywood filmmaking as disappointing considering his independent origins, but each of the larger studio films that he made still felt like very personal statements that were bursting with personality. Four Brothers is a highly entertaining revenge film that explores interesting themes about a found family.

The 1990s were some of the best years in movie history, with some of the greatest movies of all time coming out in that decade. Iconic directors like Quentin Tarantino, John Singleton, the Wachowskis, Paul Thomas Anderson, Sofia Coppola, and even Wes Anderson made their directorial debuts in the 90s. Films like The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Toy Story, and Heat all came out in that decade, proving just how incredibly strong it was.
These are just a handful of the films that people instantly recognize and love, with countless more that can be added to the list. It's worth not forgetting the incredible ones that seem to have left the public consciousness, as the 1990s provided some of the greatest movies and movie references that no one seems to talk about anymore. Jeffrey Wright began his distinguished career as a member of John Houseman‘s renowned Acting Company, touring the country performing Shakespeare and honing his craft. His stage breakthrough came with his co-starring role in the original production of “Angels in America” as the nurse Belize, a performance that won him a Tony Award and later an Emmy when Wright reprised it for the 2003 HBO miniseries adaptation.
That Tony win led to Wright starring in the title role of his first major film, “Basquiat,” directed by Julian Schnabel. It's been quite a ride for Cuba Gooding Jr. When we first saw him, he was just a goofy-looking 20-year-old kid trying to keep a straight face as Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall yukked it up as heavily made-up (by the great Rick Baker) old-timers at a Queens barbershop in "Coming to America." Three years later, he was the lead of John Singleton's groundbreaking drama "Boyz n the Hood," which launched him to big-screen stardom. Or should have, anyway. Instead, Hollywood relegated him to thankless supporting roles in crap like "Lightning Jack" and "Outbreak" until he finally got another role worthy of his talent in Cameron Crowe's "Jerry Maguire." As Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell, Gooding did the sports world a service by demonstrating that uniquely talented individuals fighting to maximize their earnings before said talent fades are not the enemy; it's the business that fights hard...

Overseeing the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is no small feat, but Rip Wheeler (played by Cole Hauser) does it well, and with style. In Taylor Sheridan's hit series "Yellowstone," Rip's responsibilities as a foreman are just one aspect of his personality, as his complex motivations and no-nonsense outlook have helped evolve the character into a fan favorite. Rip's relationship with Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) has also come a long way, with the two overcoming the obstacles surrounding a traditional star-crossed lovers scenario and becoming an unstoppable duo, here to stay despite the constant attacks on the Duttons throughout the series.
Hauser plays Rip with equal parts restrained ruthlessness and vulnerability, creating a balanced outlook that is intensely flawed but still easy to root for. Part of Rip's moral dilemma stems from his difficult past, which he constantly ran away from to avoid the trauma associated with his family before the...

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Bruce Wayne had chosen a path a bit more dastardly—perhaps one where his charm skewed toward derision rather than justice? Well, look no further than Christian Bale’s turn as Walter Wade Jr. in John Singleton’s Shaft (2000)—a character who is the poster child of privilege and racism.

Chicago – Tyrese Gibson is taking this one personally. Originally from the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles, Gibson is the lead role in the film “1992” (in theaters on August 30th). His character Mercer went through the Watts Uprising in 1965, plus he and his son must navigate the Rodney King Uprising in 1992.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
In that year, Mercer Bey (Gibson) is desperately trying to rebuild his life and relationship with his son (Christopher A’mmanuel) amidst the turbulent Los Angeles uprising following the Rodney King verdict. In Episode 3 of Justin Simien’s film history docuseries “Hollywood Black,” the director looked back at the 1990s. It’s a decade in which Hollywood’s eyes were opened to the financial possibilities of Black creatives telling Black stories by the incredible box office and critical success of John Singleton’s “Boyz n the Hood” (1991). The film created such a cultural moment it would serve as a turning point, giving birth to a whole slate of movies, like “Juice” and “Menace II Society,” that told dramatic coming-of-age stories of young Black men wrestling with violence in American inner cities.
While the Black creators and historians Simien interviewed for the docuseries pay tribute to the artistic achievement of these individual films, “Hollywood Black” also explores how, collectively, this explosion of Black mainstream films was a double-edged sword for filmmakers. It’s a topic Simien discussed in further detail when he was...

The end of the road may be nigh for the Fast & Furious family, but one member says that, despite an expected 2025 production start for the final installment in the main franchise, he has yet to see a script for the movie. Beginning in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, the billion dollar franchise has seen 10 entries thus far in the main saga, one spinoff movie, an animated series, and a couple of short films. 2023s Fast X was the latest installment, and despite making over $700 million at the worldwide box office, it was decided that it's time to put the brakes on the series, and end it once and for all.
Tyrese Gibson, whose character of Roman Pearce joined the franchise in 2003, recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz to discuss his latest drama, 1992, and the conversation inevitably turned to the Fast & Furious franchise.
