The winners of this year's Harvey Awards—which have been recognizing outstanding achievements in various comics-related categories since 1988—were announced over the weekend. The Best Manga category had a bunch of tough competition in it, and Ryoko Kui's Delicious in Dungeon manga came out on top. Five inductees were also recently announced for the Hall of Fame, including Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. The other inductees were illustrator Arthur Adams ( Uncanny X-Men ), comic author Larry Hama ( G.I. Joe ), artist and writer Sergio Aragonés ( Groo the Wanderer ) and comic artist John Buscema ( The Avengers ). Yen Press, which publishes the English edition of the Delicious in Dungeon manga, celebrated the news on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. Here's the full list of nominees in the Best Manga category: The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren, translated by Ajani Oloye (Yen Press) Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama, translated by Stephen Kohler...

The late great Bob Newhart wasn’t just a legendary stand-up comedian, he was also, of course, a prodigious sitcom star, appearing in six seasons of The Bob Newhart Show, and eight seasons of Newhart. The latter famously gave us the most memorable sitcom finale of all time, not including the time Alf was captured by the U.S. government and presumably dissected in Area 51 off-screen.
Play
Less fondly-remembered is Newhart’s third foray into the sitcom world: the aptly-named 1992 series Bob.
Bob starred Newhart as Bob McKay, the creator of an old Batman-esque comic book superhero named Mad-Dog. In the first episode, McKay gets hired to work on a gritty ‘90s reboot in which the campy character has been reimagined as a brutal vigilante who literally murders his boy sidekick. Even Zack Snyder wouldn’t go that far.

Free Comic Book Day 2024: Mad Magazine Special Edition delivers a hilarious blend of fan-favorite Mad classics and clever parodies of DC superheroes, promising a delightful read for fans. Kerry Callen's cover art parodizes Clark Kent's iconic shirt-rip, adding humor to the classic Superman moment and showcasing the comedic tone of the comic. The inclusion of officially licensed DC parody comics offers a lighthearted break from the darker storylines in the DC universe, making it a worthy addition to any comic lover's collection.
In the much-anticipated Free Comic Book Day releases, Superman steps into the limelight with a hilarious parodization of Clark Kent's iconic quick-change shirt-rip that is featured on the cover of the upcoming Mad Magazine Special Edition comic. However, the amusement doesn't end with Superman as other beloved heroes are slated to join the comedic fray of mockery and hilarity.

What’s the greatest Batman comic of all time? It’s a question that will never be definitively answered, but one serious contender is a comic parody that most fans likely haven’t read, let alone heard of…
Fanboy was a six-issue series from 1999, created by the Groo The Wanderer team of writer Mark Evanier and artist Sergio Aragonés. The series focuses on Finster, a young comic fan who gets so caught up in his own imagination, he sometimes has difficulty separating his imaginary life from the real one. As the title suggests, it’s a skewering satire of comics and the fans who love them, although the series also acts as a love letter to comics history. While Aragonés is the primary artist, each issue also features a host of guest artists from DC Comics past and present, an impressive list of legends including Gil Kane, Russ Heath, Jerry Ordway,...

Even though they’re both the creations of George Lucas, the worlds of Star Wars and Indiana Jones have only officially crossed over once. This once-in-lifetime story occurred in the pages of 2004's Star Wars Tales #19, but what’s most extraordinary about it is the real-world anecdote that served as its inspiration.
Published by Dark Horse Comics from 1999 to 2005, Star Wars Tales was an anthology series that featured stories from across the Star Wars universe. One of the aspects that made this anthology so special was the talent tasked with telling these stories, with several high-profile creators like Craig Thompson, Sergio Aragones, Terry Moore and Garth Ennis contributing to the Star Wars universe. The series was a chance for these creators to be more playful than they might get the chance to in the other Star Wars comics of the day, such as the time Mace Windu and Yoda recreated...

Alfred Molina may or may not be done as Doc Ock.
DC's co-head James Gunn stirs up some "Kingdom Come" chatter.
A helpful beginner's guide for "Marvel's Midnight Suns."
New "Masters of the Universe" comics.
All that and more!
Morbin' Time Continues As Morbius Gets An Official Lego In 2023
"Morbius" did not do very well at the box office, save for its opening weekend, but that hasn't stopped Marvel from putting the character out there more significantly. Case in point, a 2023 official Lego set is poised to feature Miles Morales doing battle with Morbius the Living Vampire.

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 5
It feels like weeks since Homer last tasted the sweet temptation of bitter fruit, but there’s lime in his cognac, and extramarital peril in the air on The Simpsons season 32, episode 5. “The 7 Beer Itch” is, hopefully, the season’s traditional flirt gone awry episode. The Simpsons, as a family, like to keep their options open when it comes to romance, but with every near event the show confirms what we all know. The only thing Homer really loves more than Marge is beer.
The title refers to the film The Seven Year Itch, which is about how marriage gets stale after about seven years, and people are more susceptible to outside influences. But by limiting the time frame to seven beers is unrealistic. Homer’s way ahead of them on that. This season has been very musical, and Groundskeeper...

The usual gang of idiots at Mad will put Mad Magazine #13 on sale next week and it might be the saddest thing to happen to music since Eminem replaced Marilyn Manson as America’s Worst Nightmare. The issue is called “Mad Mocks Music,” and it is filled with spoofs and comedic cartoons about the esteemed and infallible music industry, bless the very steady rhythms of its heart.
Mad’s had it in, and out, for music since neither of their Musically Mad LP or Mad ‘Twists’ Rock ‘n’ Roll records charted in the late 50s and early 60s. But this isn’t just about moldy oldies, contemporary artists like Billie Eilish are also relegated to scary babysitting duty in the pages of the upcoming issue. Alfred E. Newman’s What Me Worry Band continues to rebuke the Beatles musical progression with a tone-deaf alternative.

Before the days of Nintendo Power, Mad was the only publication I subscribed to, and there have been times when I've wanted to punch myself in the... Read More...

Donald Trump has been trying very hard to do a lot to this nation, thus far with pathetically little success. However, while he might not be making America great, he’s most certainly been making American comedy fantastic.
Take Stephen Colbert. After he took over The Late Show, he has been losing badly to The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon. Then the Manchild from Hell won the election – thanks to a little help from his friends – and that very evening Colbert had something of a nervous breakdown, live on CBS. To his vast credit, he put all that energy into his job: making jokes at the expense of our Megalomaniac-In-Chief. Now, six months later, he’s leaped over Fallon in the ratings.
Certainly, there’s no shortage of material. Indeed, many other comics have made similar journeys on the Trump Turnpike (“what will that asshole think of next?”). Seth Myers,...

Allen, Son of Hellcock #1 by writers Will Tracy (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) and Gabe Koplowitz and artist Miguel Porto is what happens. "Laugh-In" director George Schlatter based this 1976 farce on a failed stage play about two stereotypically Jewish parents and their frazzled reactions to the fact that their son has a boyfriend. For the film Schlatter cast Redd Foxx and Pearl Bailey as the parents, thereby ensuring a comedy even more rife with politically-incorrect possibilities. Look for Mad cartoonist Sergio Aragones in a small part.

Way back on August 26, 2010, Futurama gave us a look at the San Diego Comic-Con that will be held one thousand years later. Of course, everything about San Diego grew during the ensuing millennium – except for the San Diego Convention center. Oh, and the number of comics-related guests was reduced… to one.
Fittingly, that one was Sergio Aragones. I have no doubt that somebody will still be uncovering unpublished Aragones art in 3010.
More than a quarter of a million people pay to attend the annual Sdcc. Yes, they have a registered trademark on the word “Comic-Con,” but since that term had been in common usage long before they applied for the mark, and is still being used by other shows across America, in my opinion this is theft. As a former promoter of a “Comicon” – the Chicago Comicon, from 1976 through 1985 – I will gladly testify on behalf of anybody who chooses to challenge this mark.

It’s that time again… okay, it’s a little past that normal time, thanks to the Mix March Madness wrapup, but here are the preview materials for DC Comics releases for July 2012.
What’s on tap this month? More of the Before Watchmen books, with the debut of Ozymandias from Len Wein and Jae Lee, the conclusion of the Court of Owls storyline and crossover in all the Bat-books, and the debut of the done-in-one book, National Comics, featuring the New 52 Debut (coming right at you) of Eternity.
And in the white elephant of desire category, there’s the $300 statue showing the climactic scene from The Dark Knight Returns.
Once more, into the breach? Banzai!
As always, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Neil Gaiman and Jim Thompson bonded by Scam Fiction?
It’s all a scam, isn’t it?
My alarm goes off in the morning and I eat some cereal some marketer scammed me into thinking tastes good and is good for me. I wash myself with products I’ve been scammed into thinking will make me more pleasant company. I buy cigarettes I’ve scammed myself into thinking won’t really shorten my life from a convenience store clerk who scams me into thinking I’m paying a fair price. I go to my day-job and scam my boss into thinking I’m working hard just as he scams me into thinking my paycheck is as much as I deserve. Then I come home and attempt to scam you fine people into thinking I know what I’m talking about when it comes to crime fiction.
But of course, you’re too smart for that.

If you you’re inclined to keep an eye out, heroes pop up like Kleenex. Steve Niles just made the cut.
At the 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con Harvey Awards dinner, Mark Waid offered a courageous keynote address which offered a simple message: digital comics are here to stay, there is an international bootlegging community and we as creators and industry doyens must learn to deal with it. For this, Mark was roundly booed, hassled and harassed by his peers. Astonishingly, one of his tormentors was the otherwise quite gentlemanly Sergio Aragonés.
I don’t recall if Steve Niles was at the dinner, but if not, it’s likely he heard about it. Suggesting that any acknowledgement of those who pirate comics is akin to taking a dump on the bible. This is true throughout the media: records (yeah, it’s okay to call them “records;” look it up), movies and teevee shows,...

Who among us hasn’t grown up spending lazy summer afternoons with a ratty copy of Mad magazine? From Mort Drucker’s caricatures, Don Martin’s zany sound effects, Sergio Aragonés’ silly marginal cartoons, and finishing up with Al Jaffee’s brilliant fold-ins, it’s where many of our comedic identities were shaped.
And remember Spy vs Spy, those never-ending gags of one upmanship that would make Wile E. Coyote proud? Well, it seems Warner Brothers does, and they are bringing together the talents of Ron Howard, David Koepp, and Brian Grazer to do so.
Deadline reports that a live action feature is being developed for Ron Howard to direct and produce with Koepp and Grazer. Although Cuban artist Antonio Prohías’ Spy vs Spy cartoons were short and simple, it remains to be seen whether the idea can sustain a two-hour movie. And what would our black and white spies look like?...

Sergio Aragonés has discussed the details of his crossover between Groo the Wanderer and Conan the Barbarian. The cartoonist is working on the four-issue miniseries that portrays the meeting between his own creation and Robert E. Howard's classic hero for Dark Horse Comics. The story also features an appearance by Aragonés himself. "Because of something that happens to me inside the comic while I'm trying to defend a comic book shop that is going to be torn down, I get beat up on the head and, of course, I start fantasizing about the whole thing and that's funny," he told Comic Book Resources. "I think that I'm Conan. But then I go into the fantasy and the real Conan is there, drawn by Thomas Yeates. Thomas is an excellent artist who draws Zorro and does (more)...

Our friends over at HeroComplex snagged the new animated sketch show's producers Mark Marek (of Crank Yankers fame) and 'Emmy winner' Kevin Shinick (of Robot Chicken) and sat them down for an interview. For those who are too lazy to click that link and read their awesome interview, allow us to give you the 411:

Taking a 'film festival' approach to presentation, the Mad cartoon show will feature short cartoon sketches in a variety of styles. WonderCon, one of the country’s most popular and well-attended comic book conventions, boasts an impressive guest list for the annual event being held in San Francisco on Friday through Sunday April 2-4, 2010. WonderCon is produced by the same organization that produces the world-renowned Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Guests at WonderCon will take part in programs and panel discussions that spotlight their career and contributions to the comic book and popular arts industries. Many will also be available for autographing sessions. Those scheduled to appear include:
Murphy Anderson: One of comics’ most respected inkers, Anderson is also known for his stunning pencils on Hawkman, Adam Strange, and Atomic Knights. Anderson’s long career in comics — dating back to the Golden Age — includes the Buck Rogers syndicated comic strip and a long stint producing Ps, the Preventive Maintenance magazine for the U.S. Army.

Their responses ranged from eager anticipation of buzz-friendly video games and movies to a distinct avoidance of anything with too much hype — so read on for the full breakdown of which projects and plans are foremost on creators' minds as we begin 2010.
MTV: Which comics, movies, games, music or any other types of projects arriving in 2010 are you looking forward to the most?
Aside from "Bioshock 2," I got nothing.
