Bobby Sherman Dies: Teen Idol Singer & ‘Here Comes The Brides’ Actor Was 81
Image
Bobby Sherman, a hitmaking teen-idol singer and actor who starred in the ABC comedy Here Come the Brides and appeared on such hit series as The Partridge Family, Emergency! and Mod Squad, died Tuesday morning of cancer. He was 81.

His wife Brigitte Poublon Sherman announced the news on social media via her friend John Stamos (read his post below). She had said in March that her husband was fighting terminal Stage 4 cancer.

“He lived with integrity, gave without hesitation, and loved with his whole heart,” Poublon Sherman said in Stamos’ post. “And though our family feels his loss profoundly, we also feel the warmth of his legacy — his voice, his laughter, his music, his mission. Thank you to every fan who ever sang along, who ever wrote a letter, who ever sent love his way. He felt it. Rest gently, my love.”

The Country Music Star Who Gave Kurt Russell His Singing Voice For Elvis
Image
Is there anything Kurt Russell can't do? There are obviously things he has yet to do. He hasn't won the Nobel Prize for economics, nor has he landed on the Moon. He hasn't cured cancer, and, last I checked, he hasn't set the land speed record for driving a Chevy Nova in reverse. But because he is Kurt Russell, we assume he'll get around to these things in between rounds of golf.

What has Kurt Russell done to merit such confidence in his abilities? Need I say list the titles? "Used Cars," "Escape from New York," "The Thing" "Big Trouble in Little China," "Tango & Cash," "Backdraft," "Tombstone"... the man is the patron saint of afternoon dad cinema. He's a self-deprecating John Wayne — a big, blustery, bluffing tough guy who, despite his occasional oafishness, always comes through in the clutch. He's not afraid to make himself look silly; in fact,...

He met Roger Corman on the Fox lot and moved into feature films, writing the Corman-produced 1970 comedy “Gas! – Or – It Became Necessary to Destroy the World in Order to Save It.”

He continued making films for Corman and his brother Gene Corman, moving into directing with “Private Duty Nurses.” The 1972 Blaxploitation film “Hit Man,” which he directed and co-wrote, starred Pam Grier and Bernie Casey. Next up was “Vigilante Force,” with Kris Kristofferson and Jan-Michael Vincent, and the TV movie “Hot Rod.”

Sylvester Stallone's 5 Movie Cameos Explained
Image
Sylvester Stallone cameos are pretty rare, but they sure leave an impact whenever they happen. Stallone was a struggling actor for much of the 1970s, but once he broke through with Rocky, he became one of the biggest stars in the world. From Rocky to the numerous other Stallone action movies that arrived during the 1980s and 1990s, he tended to be first billed every time. That's why Stallone cameos were rare during this era as he largely avoided supporting parts.

In more recent years, Sly has made guest appearances in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequels and Expendables 4 - despite the latter being one of Stallone's major action franchises. Still, there aren't many examples of the star showing up uncredited for a single scene, and the ones that exist are bizarre.

Cannonball! (1976) Directed by Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul)

Before Rocky, Stallone's most famous project was Death Race 2000.

American Cinematheque to Host Return of Allison and Tiffany Anders’ ‘Don’t Knock the Rock’ Film Festival
Image
Throughout the early 2000s, the rock ‘n’ roll film festival “Don’t Knock the Rock” was one of the highlights of any L.A.-based cinephile’s year, an impeccably assembled program of movies, live performances, and panels celebrating the intersection between rock ‘n’ roll and cinema. Created by writer-director Allison Anders and music supervisor Tiffany Anders, “Don’t Knock the Rock” was beloved for its determination to showcase difficult-to-see music documentaries and for the breadth and depth of its programming.

The festival last graced L.A. screens in 2016, but now it’s returning to Hollywood via the American Cinematheque with a line-up that’s one of the best ever. From May 23-27, “Don’t Knock the Rock” will screen an eclectic mix of documentaries, music-themed narrative films, and essential retrospective programs at the Cinematheque’s Los Feliz venue, with an added virtual component that will stream from May 23-July 31. Roger Corman Gets a Hero’s Welcome at Beyond Fest With Protégés Ron Howard, Joe Dante and More Reliving Big Breaks and Disastrous Test Screenings
Image
“This is the only person to run a studio who knows how to make a movie,” director Allan Arkush exclaimed, hailing his former boss Roger Corman in front of a sold-out crowd at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica Saturday evening.

Now 97 years old, the unbelievably prolific Pope of Pop Cinema was the guest of honor at the genre-focused Beyond Fest, in partnership with American Cinematheque. Corman joined for a panel with Arkush, fellow directors Ron Howard, Joe Dante and Amy Holden Jones and producer Jon Davison — all of whom Corman helped launch into Hollywood under his independent production and distribution company New World Pictures, founded in 1970. After directing more than 45 features, Corman decided to create his own banner, which would go on to help jumpstart the careers of Jonathan Demme, Curtis Hanson and countless other talents.

“I made a picture for American International that made too much money, ‘The Wild Angels.

TCM Classic Film Festival 2023: Hollywood Titans Support Saving Movie Memories
Image
Opening night of the 14th TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood brought out not only the lustrous 4D restored Howard Hawks classic western “Rio Bravo” — starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Angie Dickinson, 91, who was on hand — but two directors and board members of Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson. They extolled Scorsese’s foresight and ongoing commitment to preserving and saving the original celluloid elements of classic films so that restorations like this one can occur.

“David and Warner Bros have their own archivists and they have titles they’d like from the Warner Bros. archive to be preserved,” said Spielberg explaining how titles are chosen, nearly 1000 since 1990 to date. “And every studio does have that but we try to find the films, not the films that are our favorite movies, but films that tell a very unique story of this country and the people of this country,...
