Following are some supplemental sections featuring notable director & actor teams that did not meet the criteria for the main body of the article. The filmography of Elijah Wood has some dark moments, be it his depiction of the killer Kevin in Sin City or his twisted relationship with the titular canine in the sitcom Wilfred, which returns to FX on Wednesday. But there isn’t much in the Lord of the Rings actor’s résumé that would prepare you for his new movie, Maniac. Directed by Franck Khalfoun (P2) and co-penned by French gore-teur Alexandre Aja (High Tension, Piranha 3D) this remake of the 1980 cult slasher flick stars Wood as a mannequin renovator and serial killer whose passions come together in extremely violent fashion.

Editors’ note: With The ABCs of Death arriving in theaters this week, here is a re-run of our own Luke Mullen’s review of the film from Fantastic Fest, originally published on September 30, 2012. The brainchild of Ant Timpson and Tim League, The ABCs of Death sounds like a great idea: let’s bring some of the smartest up-and-coming genre directors together to create 26 separate short films, each based on a letter from the alphabet. If it sounds ambitious, that’s an understatement. Wrangling that many short films from so many different filmmakers in so many different countries couldn’t have been easy, but things finally came together and buzz was pretty high when we finally sat down to see it at Fantastic Fest. It’s hard to describe the experience of watching 26 different shorts in the space of two hours. There’s not really a sense of tone since each short is so different, but...

Nick Damici, star of Twitch faves like Jim Mickle's Stakeland, Mulberry Street and his upcoming re-imagining of Jorge Michel Grau's We Are What We Are, will take the lead in Adrian Garcia Bogliano's Late Phases. Bogliano is also a favorite of ours with tremendous output into the Spanish-speaking horror scene with films like Here Comes The Devil, Penumbra, and Cold Sweat. From our perspective, this is a match made in genre heaven. This will be Bogliano's first English language project and shooting is expected to begin some time in the Spring. Bogliano had this to say about the addition of Nick to the project, "I'm super excited about having him on the project. He's a very talented actor and it's pretty obvious for his work as a writer that he is a very sensitive...

Mpi's Dark Sky Films has announced that Nick Damici, star of cult horror faves Stake Land and We Are What We Are, will lead the cast of Late Phases, the first English-language production from rising horror director Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Here Comes The Devil, Penumbra, Cold Sweat). Dark Sky is co-producing Late Phases with Zak Zeman's Site B Productions (S-vhs), and will also be joining forces again with Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix (as they did previously on House of the Devil, Stake Land, The Innkeepers and more). The story focuses on a man who moves into a town where the residents are being killed by predators believed to be dogs... but after barely surviving one such attack, he discovers that the assailants are something even more dangerous. "We're excited to be working with Mpi Dark Sky again, with a great script and Damici in the lead,” said Fessenden.

26 directors got together and put together a film that depicts various ways of being killed according to the alphabet. The result is filled with blood and boobs, and it’s totally insane.
The ABC’s of Death is what happens after people in Hollywood decide to make a film after spending a whole night indulging in hardcore drinking and controlled pharmaceuticals. The trailer doesn’t offer much in way of plot but there’s plenty of gore to go around, along with boobs, blood, and various furry animals doing nasty things to different parts of the anatomy.
From a woman stepping into a shower with a chainsaw to give herself a home-style breast reduction to a guy punching a dog during a unique fight-to-the-death, this is one film where you won’t be able to guess what’s coming. Oh, did I mention the Claymation horror story? Yeah, there’s one of those,...

Here Comes the Devil, prolific writer/director Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s tenth film in just eight years, is a scatty Spanish horror with promise trapped within. Its influences are drawn upon heavily, but instead of acting as homage, they tie the film down like a dead weight. A simple, intermittently effective tale of familial possession, Here Comes the Devil is an attempt by a promising director to devolve into someone else – someone with lesser talents.
Beginning with two naked, 20-something women scissoring to ecstasy on a blood-red bed, Here Comes the Devil makes its intentions clear from the start. It wants to be a shocking film (gore and nudity is spattered throughout, often in the same frame), a horror movie that knows horror. The nods to stylised Italian pulp fiction, however, were lost on the audience: “That was, like, just a bunch of Zooms and, like, Breasts” said the awful student people sat behind me.

Right from the start, the anthology horror film The ABCs of Death, produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League, comes with one major handicap: The film is divided into twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director (spanning fifteen countries), and each assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were given carte blanche to indulge in their most grotesque impulses. Each letter is presented sequentially, and the director’s chosen word is revealed only at the end of each short – sometimes as a punch line or a revelation, and often to underscore or enlighten the segment’s theme.

There's no question about it, Argentina has emerged as the clear leader in the Latin American horror scene. With directors such as Adrian Garcia Bogliano, Javier Diment and Nicanor Loreti winning raves at festivals around the globe, the Argentinian horror scene in both the most prolific and most visible of any in South America. And the next title that looks likely to turn some heads is Nicolas Ortiz' The Flaying (El Bosque De Los Sometidos). Director Adrian Garcia Bogliano has become something of an Austin favorite in the last few years, making a splash with horror films "Cold Sweat" at South by Southwest and "Penumbra" at last year's Fantastic Fest, and the folks at this year's Ff showed their appreciation by giving "Here Comes the Devil" pretty much every award in the horror category. It's a good film, too, a solidly plotted and performed horror pic in a very 70's mold, punctuated with the occasional moment of legitimately shocking violence. What it does best, and probably the reason for its awards sweep, is create a crescendo of dread that Bogliano's script manages to sustain for most of its running time. Sol spends the movie being a good mother and trying to learn the truth about what happened on that fateful night, and there's a chance you might figure out the answers to her questions before she does.
