Matthew Goodman(I)
- Additional Crew
- Production Manager
- Writer
A lifelong creative, raised globally and educated in Massachusetts, Matthew Goodman (1) got his start as a child cartoonist, moving on to 8mm stop-motion film-making and ultimately indie and studio film production, Screenwriting, Producing and Directing.
Matthew got his Los Angeles start under Straight-to-video legends Richard Pepin & Joseph Merhi of PM Entertainment fame while working with C. Thomas Howell, Titus Welliver, action-genre legend Gary Daniels and childhood hero Sugar Ray Leonard. Moving up and out of PM in a matter of months, he went on to work on his 1st studio film, Spawn, working closely with Michael Jai White and Martin Sheen then on to "Poison Ivy 3 the new seduction" with Michel de Barres, Jamie Presley, Academy Award(TM) winner Susan Tyrell and Deborah Zane -- who's brother he would work with on Titanic a year later.
Worked closely with James Cameron, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio and Billy Zane, Gloria Stewart and the entire cast while overseeing the looping for Titanic at the legendary Todd-AO sound studios under post-super Lisa Dennis and Executive Producers Ray Sanchini, Bill Mechanic & Producer John Landau.
His 1st duty as a Titanic Crew-member was to fax out a press release about the now legendary "LSD in the lobster bisque" incident! His last duty, 10 months later? Being told by Jim himself to quit production and become a screenwriter -- and was gifted a laptop to do it right then and there.
Producer Jenny Lew Tugand & Star Wars alumni Phil Tippett were the 1st pros to read the first draft of his Cameron-inspired foray into blockbuster-sized screenwriting entitled "Guardian". Both gave positive reviews: "this will get made, just not by us, too big a budget. You've got it as a writer, just think smaller, more shootable"
Developed his indie action/comedy screenplay "Wet Work" as a vehicle for martial artist (and iron chef!) Mark Dacascos, Benjamin Bratt, David Cross & Bree Turner. Only Turner was cast in the eventual production entitled "Whacked!" also starring Judge Reinhold and Carmen Electra.
Proudly joined the WGAw in 2001, a lifelong dream.
His "Day job" while working as a screenwriter was being one of a handful of loan-out Post-Supers with Lucas Film's THX - T.A.P; Theater Alignment Program on varied projects including: Beloved, How Stella got Her Grove Back, Shrek, Saving Private Ryan, The Grinch, The Hurricane (2 weeks side-by-side with Rubin Carter!) Star Wars Episode 1, 2, 3, Gladiator, Fight Club, Monkey Bone, Freddy Got Fingered, Bend it like Beckham, (revisited Titanic) on Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss 3D, Down with Love, Meet Joe Black (sleeping on the screening room floor for 3 days with director Martin Brest to find the perfect print for the premier) Master and Commander...(closely with director Peter Weir & Jeffery Harlacker), Prince of Egypt, Spirit, stallion of the Cimarron, American Beauty, Unbreakable, (Peter Jackson's) King Kong (Bill Paxton and Charlize Therons') Mighty Joe Young, Moulin Rouge!, X-2 X-Men United and Road to Perdition - working side-by-side with legend Conrad Hall on his last feature film as cinematographer.
Was the 1st "outsider" to screen "Anchorman: The legend of Ron Burgundy" and had to stop reel 1 to compose himself during the opening credit "the Human Torch was denied a bank loan" line. Adam Mackay has been quoted as saying; "It was then we knew we had a hit."
Associate Produced the 1st of it's kind, Sci-Fest the 1 act sci-fi play festival, featuring legendary Australian artist and filmmaker Philippe Mora, and Star Trek alumni Tim Russ, Patricia Tallman and actor-musician-writer & Mighty Duck, Matt Doherty (1).
During his brief stint as a P.A. on "Power Rangers Zeo" stepped in (the Director refused to come out of his trailer after lunch) and directed an extended action sequence starring legendary native American actor Frank Salsedo.
Acolyte of spiritual-creative mentor & Production Designer "Mama D" Marya Delia Javier along with Martha Coolidge, Fred Roos & Marlon Brando.
Officially a member of the Coppola-Lucas-Cameron extended creative "family"
Had the only copy of the demo (on cassette!) of "my heart will go on" in his pocket, entrusted to him by James Horner to deliver to Jim personally - the actual track heard on the theatrical cut of the film.
Was a "driver photo-double" for Winona Ryder (her short hair phase) on a Japan-only Subaru advert.
"I was invited to meet John Williams in his Star Wars themed office as a wee lad, after his 1st Boston Pops performance as conductor. Decades later, while I was working on the Star Wars prequels, we met again and he remembered me as a boy - best part, we were both dressed identically both times we met, in matching black turtlenecks of course!"
His "voice" can be heard as flapping sails in the opening of Master and Commander...
His body can be seen in motion-captured as one of the "Swabies" on the deck of the Titanic digital flyover -- right after the "I'm the king of the world!" moment
Attended the London premier of The Muppet Movie and Bakshi's Lord of the Rings as a child.
His 1st TV appearance was being interviewed as a child upon exiting a premier of The Dark Crystal
Has dipped his toe in Ewok lake!
Recommended Kathy Griffin be cast in "The Big Fall" (with Sam Seder) as "Sally" upon seeing her head-shot in the trash, and telling the producer she had just been in Pulp Fiction...the trailer specifically.
1st job in Hollywood: Worked for QT and Bender's A Band Apart for a single day - throwing away a room full of unsolicited screenplays, but recycling the brass brads of course.
Studied Acting for Directors under David Dean Bottrell
Has Directed Ted Raimi, Jennifer Siebel-Newsom, Amir Tali & Madison McLaughlin (1)
Works frequently with: James Cameron George Lucas Dawn Higginbotham Jack Betts Clark Carlton Damien-David Mattia
